Today’s project is so awesome and fun! I am most certain you will love creating something from this cool new crochet cable stitch.
It is a larger, exaggerated take on the traditional cabled wheat stitch. Just to get an idea of how the cable worked up, I created this cabled cowl.
I will be sharing however, the necessary multiples for creating blankets, scarves and more! Let’s start first with the pattern for making this beautiful cowl!
FOR THIS PROJECT:
I used the awesome YarnBee yarn from Hobby Lobby in the colors;
– hot grape
– violet
They came from; the soft secret line of the YarnBee yarns.
Hook size was J/6mm
THE PATTERN:
Working in multiples of 9 + 6 (these 6 are the edging of your project. There will be 3 on both sides of your work)
We will begin our foundation chain with 106
ROW 1 – starting in the second CH from the hook you will HDC (half double crochet) all the way across, CH 1, turn.
ROW 2 – HDC in next 3 stitches, *FPDC in next 3 post sts, 1 HDC in next st, FPD in next 3 stitches. Repeat from * all the way across until the last 3 sts. You will place a HDC in each of the last 3 sts. CH 1, turn.
ROW 3 – HDC in next 3 sts, *BPDC (back post double crochet) in next 3 post sts, 1 HDC in next st, BPDC in next 3 post stitches. Repeat from * all the way across until the last 3 sts. You will place a HDC in each of the last 3 sts. CH 1, turn.
ROW 4 – HDC in next 3 sts, skip 3 sts, * HDC in next st, FPTR (front post treble crochet) in next 3 FPDC sts. WORKING BACKWARDS BEHIND THE FPTR STS, place a FPTR in each of the skipped stitches, HDC in next st, skip 3 sts, FPTR in the next 3 st posts. WORKING BACKWARDS IN FRONT OF THE FPTR STS, place a FPTR in each of the skipped stitches. Repeat from * all the way across until the last 3 sts. You will place a HDC in each of the last 3 sts. CH 1, turn.
ROW 5 – HDC in next 3 sts, *BPDC in next 3 post sts, HDC in the same HDC space, BPDC in next 3 post sts, HDC in the HDC space of the previous row. Repeat from * all the way across until the last 3 sts. You will place a HDC in each of the last 3 sts. CH 1, turn.
ROW 6 – (however high you need your project) : repeat rows 2-5
You can decide how you. Would. Like to finish off your project. I would suggest adding a final row of HDC to mimic your initial row.
When making this cowl I worked one color skein until I ran out of yarn and then used the other color skein to finish. I am not sure how many rows total I worked but if you just use 2 skeins of whatever color(s) you choose it will be about the same length as mine.
Below is a printable you can use to determine your blanket size. If you’re wanting to make a scarf I would create one using 1, 2 or 3 wheat cables. Just follow the multiples count (the multiple is for making one complete wheat Cable plus the edging).
I am working right now to add a video tutorial to all of the crochet cable patterns I have created so far. I should have them up on our YHNStudios YouTube channel by the end of this week!
Be sure to subscribe so you can be notified when those go live!

Hi Mary!
Yes, I just sewed the sides together and created a sort of “tube” if you will. Thanks for stopping by!

Your cowl is gorgeous! I haven’t tried a cable stitch yet, but I’m excited to try your pattern. Thanks!

Thanks, Staci! I hope you enjoy giving it a try! Just remember to be patient with yourself when you first start with cables. With practice, you will fall in love and want to make all the cable things! 🙂

Beautiful Cowl!! I can’t wait to begin a couple for myself and friends! I think an eBook of cable stitch patterns would be splendid. Thanks for sharing!
