Many of your local hospitals would love to receive these hats. Make them different colors for different holidays too :)
Size G (4 mm) crochet hook
Newborn Hat =10.5" across and 7.25" tall. Preemie hat = 8.5"
across, and 6.5" tall
Need approximately 175 yds of soft #3 baby yarn (or soft #4 worsted weight yarn )
Gauge using baby yarn:
5 rows = 1" 10 stitches = 2"
Abbreviations:
Ch = chain, sc = single crochet
Ch 28 (34 newborn)
Row 1: Sc in
2nd ch
from hook and in each ch across. Ch 1 and turn. 34 sts (27
sts)
Row 2: Sc in
back
loops
only (forms
the "stripes"/ridges) in each st across
row. Ch 1 and turn.
Rows 3- 36 (42):
Repeat row
2. End off leaving 15" tail to stitch side seam.
Hat should measure 8.5" Preemie; (10.5" newborn) across before stitching to fit baby.
Fold in half
widthwise and
whip-stitch seam shut and gather the top.
To make a larger infant hat use a soft worsted weight yarn and an H (5 mm) hook.
