Bev's Beehive Hat "in the Round"
4 - 6  lb baby (7-9 lb baby) (10-13 lb baby)  - can be made in all sizes with more stitches and more rows.  Be creative!
Pattern and photo Copyright 2000, 2016 Beverly A Qualheim
Hat is crocheted flat but looks like it's made in the round when it's done.  Works great for preemies, newborns, even 'American Girl Dolls'TM/18" dolls. For 18" dolls use directions for the 4-6 lb baby size.  If you need a NICU to donate your finished hats, please check out THIS PAGE.

Beehive hatMaterials:
1 oz soft 4 ply worsted weight yarn, or sport yarn.
Size G hook  (size H hook if you crochet tightly)

Make the BAND first... band for preemie hat

Directions:
Ch 5
Row 1: Sc in the 2nd ch from the hook and in the next 3 sts.  Ch 1 and turn.
Row 2: Sc in 2nd sc from hook (back Loops only throughout).  Sc in each sc across, ch 1 and turn

Repeat Row 2 until band measures about 8.5" (10")(12") .  Next you will be doing the TOP of the hat.
Now you will turn to form the TOP of the hat:
Ch 1 and work along top edge of band ~ sc 34 (40)(50 sts) sc evenly across the row, ch 1 and turn.
(back loops only)
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each sc across, ch 1 and turn. 33 sts (39 sts)(49 sts)
Row 2-10: Repeat Row 1 until the hat measures about 3" (4.5")(6")from the beginning.

Decreasing for top:
Row 1: *Sc in 2 sts, sc 2 sts together (go through backs of sts); repeat from * across. Ch 1 and turn.
Rows 2 and other even rows, sc in each sc across; ch 1 and turn.
Row 3: *Sc in 2 sts, sc 2 sts together; rep from * across.  Ch 1 and turn.
Row 5: *Sc in 1 st, sc 2 sts together; rep from * across.  Ch 1 and turn. flat hat
Row 7: Sc 2 sts together across row.  Ch 1 and turn.
Row 8: Sc across and finish off.  Leaving a 12" tail.
Fold hat in half and gather top and then sew side seam. ----->

For a creative BAND - add a row of shell stitch.  Roll up the brim/band, and add yarn again.  Into the first stitch dc 5 sts. skip 2 sts and dc 5 more into the next st.  Continue around.  Or you can be creative.  I like to make a loopy edge by sc into the first stitch of the brim, ch 5, sk 1 st and sc into next.  Continue around.
(Hat can be made smaller for tinier babies, simply by using baby yarn, or a smaller hook.)
