Free Pattern – Crochet Spider and Web Poncho

Well, it seemed like it was finally summer and now fall begins this weekend .

Not that I have anything against fall. It is almost tied with summer for being my favorite season. Mild weather, fall foliage, holidays, deliciously scented candles (apple pie, anyone?), seasonal desserts (again, apple pie anyone?)…. I’m sure we can all think of many reasons why fall is so great. The only drawback is the winter chill that begins to creep in, but I guess a positive to this is having an even better reason to crochet!

Halloween is also creeping around the corner, which is a good reason to stretch my creativity into designing some bizarre creations. This week I decided to sit down and design a spider web poncho. I even took it a step further and made a black widow spider to go along with it:

The spider took some trial and error, but after staring at a picture of a black widow spider for far longer than I ever wanted to, I think I got it:

I started with the abdomen, which is worked in the round and shaped by using different stitch counts and stitches. I then embroidered the classic hour glass shape that the female black widow is known for using a small amount of red yarn I had in my stash.

The cephalothorax (which is my biology teacher speak for the front part of the body with the legs coming out 😂) is also crocheted in the round with reaaaalllly long picots for the legs, and two small picots for the fangs. I then sewed it to the abdomen.

The poncho is crocheted using stitches ranging from single crochet all the way up to triple treble crochet (and lots and lots of chains). If you are new to crochet or need a refresher, I linked to excellent tutorials for the types of treble stitches in the stitch guide. You can even customize the poncho further by adding rows if you want it longer, or making the neck hole smaller if you are making this for a child. Just decrease the initial chain by multiples of 5. I would be wary of making this for very small children and toddlers though since it can easily catch on something.

Ch 85 and join, being careful not to twist the chain.

R1) Ch 1, sc in same ch and in each ch around, join. (85 sc)

R2) Ch 2, hdc in same stitch and each around, join. (85 hdc)

R3) Ch 10, *sk 4 sts, dc in next st, ch 7. Repeat from * around, join to 3rd ch of ch 10.

R4) Ch 13, *Tr in next dc, ch 9. Repeat from * around, join to 4th ch of ch 13.

R5) Ch 15, *Tr in next tr, ch 11. Repeat from * around, join to 4th ch of ch 15.

R6) Ch 18, *Dtr in next tr, ch 13. Repeat from * around, join to 5th ch of ch 18.

R7) Ch 21, *Trtc in next dtr, ch 15. Repeat from * around, join to 6th ch of ch 21.

Abdomen:

R1) Ch 4, 9 dc in 4th ch from hook. Join. (10 dc)

R2) Ch 3, dc in same st, 2 dc in each st around. Join. (20 dc)

R3) Sl st next 4 sts, [sc, hdc] next st, 2 dc in next 4 sts, 2 tr in next 2 sts, 2 dc in next 4 sts, [hdc, sc] in next st, sl st last 4 sts. (32 sts)

Fasten off, leave tail for sewing.

Cephalothorax (head/body):

R1) Ch 4, 9 dc in 4th ch, join. (10 dc)

R2) Ch 3, dc in same st, then (this is trickier to read than to do so I am breaking this round into bullets):

• 2 dc in next st,
• [dc, ch 12, sc in 2nd ch from hook and remaining 10 chs, sl st to top of dc, dc again in same st, ch 8, sc in 2nd ch from hook and remaining 6 chs, slst to top of dc],
• [dc in next st, ch 8, sc in 2nd ch from hook and remaining 6 chs, slst to top of dc, dc again in same st, ch15, sc in 2nd ch from hook and remaining 13 chs, slst to top of dc],
• [dc in next st, dc in same st, ch 4, sl st to top of dc],
• [dc in next st, ch 4, sl st to top of dc, dc again in same st],
• [dc in next st, ch 15, sc in 2nd chain from hook and remaining 13 chs, sl st to top of dc, dc again in same st, ch 8, sc in 2nd chain from hook and remaining 6 chs, sl st to top of dc],
• [dc in next st, ch 8, sc in 2nd ch from hook and remaining 6 chs, dc again in same st, ch 12, sc in 2nd ch from hook and remaining 10 chs, sl st to top of dc],
• 2 dc in next 2 sts, join, fasten off.

Assembly

Sew the two body pieces of the spider together. Refer to the pictures for placement. Optional: Using red yarn, embroider the hourglass shape if you want your spider to be a black widow. Attach spider as desired onto web.
