Yesterday, as we walked through the snow, I couldn’t’ help but think of the soft yarn waiting for me at home. The gloves I was wearing weren’t quite long enough to cover my wrists as much as I like them to so when I got home, I pulled out my hook and yarn. I decided to make something pretty and functional. I wanted them to look pretty when worn by themselves and functional so that I could wear them underneath a pair of waterproof snow gloves. The result was these adorable fingerless gloves.
I enjoy designing quick and simple projects, most of which can be made with scrap yarn. I love the satisfaction of completing a project. Quick projects are great to have on hand because it can give you a much-needed break from more difficult and time-consuming ones. I know that when I take a break from a tedious big project and make something small, the satisfaction I receive from that gives me the boost I need to continue with my more difficult challenge.
So, without further ado, I give you the Wandering Through Winter Fingerless Gloves!

Wandering Through Winter Fingerless Gloves
Materials:
- 5.5mm or I hook
- Worsted weight yarn (I used I Love This Yarn in the colorway Light Gray but you can use any kind you like)
- Yarn Needle
- Stitch Marker
- Scissors
Stitches:
- St – stitch
- Ch – chain
- Sc – Single Crochet
- Hdc – half-double crochet (see notes below)
- Dc – Double Crochet
- Slst – slip stitch
Special Stitches:
- Special Hdc: All Hdc stitches should be worked in-between the half-double crochets from the previous row. This creates a beautiful and warm fabric. I have included some pictures at the end of the pattern for instruction or you can watch this video here.
- Shell Stich: Five dc into the same stitch
Notes:
- Gauge: 10 rows of 10 hdc (see notes for special hdc stitch) with a chain 1 at the end of each row = 3.5″ wide x 3.5″ tall
- The stitch count for each row will appear in ( ) at the end of the row.
- All Hdc stitches in the pattern are intended to be worked as the Special Hdc stitch mentioned above unless otherwise stated. If using a regular Hdc, please note that the size of the glove might vary because the height of the stitch is different.
- Most of the glove is worked in the round. I recommend using a stitch marker to mark the beginning or end of your round so that you can easily keep track of where you are.
- My hand is about average. Everyone’s hand and crochet tension are different so make sure you try on the glove as you work the pattern to make sure that it will fit your hand. If you need to make it smaller or larger, simply work up less or more rows when making the cuff. You can also make it taller by adding more rounds.
Cuff:
Row 1: Ch 11, sc into the second ch from hook and into each st across (10)
Row 2-26: Ch 1, turn, working into the back loops only, sc into each stitch across (10)
Join both ends and sc together to make cuff. Do not fasten off and continue to work hand instructions.
Hand:
You will now begin working along the edge of the cuff you created.
Round 1: Ch 1, sc twenty-six times evenly around the edge (1 sts into each row of the cuff), slst into the first sc made to join (26)
Round 2: Ch1, Hdc into each stitch around (26) Do not join. You will be working in a continuous round.
From now on, you will be using the Special Hdc stitched described above.
Round 3: Hdc into each stitch around (26)
Round 4-11: repeat round 3 (26)
Round 12: Hdc into the first 11 sts, ch4, skip the next 4 sts, hdc into the last 11 sts (22 hdc, 4 chains)
Round 13: Hdc into the first 11 sts, 5 hdc around the ch4, hdc into the remaining 10 sts (26)
Round 14-15: Hdc into each st around (26)
Slst to join
Round 16: Ch3 (counts as dc), 4dc into the same st, *skip 1 st, slst into the next st, skip 1 st, shell stich into the next* repeat between * * around , slst to join. (7 shells)
Fasten off and weave in any loose ends.
