Free Pattern – Sugar & Spice Baby Bib

It’s been quite a while since I have had any babies in my arm. My boys are in their teen years but I can still recall the sweetness of having little ones.

A friend of mine was having a baby so I decided I would make her something that was not only cute, but useful. The end result of my pondering on what to make was a bib. They are so helpful, even for newborns. I found I could easily wipe up any spills or drools and avoid having to change an entire outfit (if you have ever changed a baby’s clothes, then you know what I mean).

This pattern is great for advanced beginners. It’s a great way to work on crocheting two stitches together and creating beautiful yet simple borders. I recommend using cotton yarn for it’s absorbancy and washability.

I hope you enjoy making these as much as the mom receiving them will enjoy using them. There tends to be a tendency for more babies to be born in the spring so releasing this pattern now will give anyone needing a baby shower gift plenty of time to make a few!

Sugar & Spice Baby Bib

Materials

• 5.0mm H hook
• Cotton yarn
• Yarn needle
• Large button
• Scissors
• Optional: Crochet appliques for decoration

Stitches:

• St – stitch
• Ch – chain
• Sc – Single Crochet
• Sc2tog – Single crochet two stitches together
• Dc – Double Crochet
• Slst – slip stitch

 

Bib

Chain 20

Row 1: Sc into the second chain from hook and across to the end, Ch1, turn (19)

Row 2: 2sc into the first st, sc across up to the last st, 2sc into the last st, Ch 1, turn (21)

Row 3: Sc across, Ch1, turn (21)

Row 4: 2sc into the first st, sc across up to the last st, 2sc into the last st, Ch1, turn (23)

Row 5: Sc across, Ch1, turn (23)

Row 6: 2sc in the first st, sc across up to the last st, 2sc into the last st, Ch1, turn (25)

Row 7: Sc across, Ch1, turn (25)

Row 8: 2sc in the first st, sc across up to the last st, 2sc into the last st, Ch1, turn (27)

Row 9-26: sc across, Ch1, turn (27)

Row: 27: Sc into the first 6 sts, sc2tog, Ch1, turn, leaving remaining sts unworked (7)

Row 28: Sc2tog, sc across, Ch1, turn (6)

Row 29: Sc into the first 4 sts, sc2tog, Ch1, turn (5)

Row 30-39: sc across, Ch1, turn (5)

Row 40: 2sc into the first st, sc in the next 2 sts, sc2tog, Ch1, turn (5)

Row 41: Sc2tog, sc in the next 2 sts, 2sc in the last st, Ch1, turn (5)

Repeat rows 40 and 41 thirteen more times, ending on a repeat of row 41 (this will take you through row 67)

Row 68: Repeat row 40 one last time.

Row 69: Sc in the first 4 sts, 2sc (this turns your work so that you are now working along the inside of the neck).

Row 70: Sc evenly along the inside of the neck strap and the front of the neck (see picture #1). Stop at the last st of the inside seam of the neck. Do not fasten off and continue with your choice of outside edging.

Outside edging options:

Crab Stitch (reverse single crochet):

Ch 1

Turn your work so that the side of the bib is up.

Going backwards, sc evenly along the outer edge of bib and strap.

Do not fasten off.

Continue with the button loop instructions.

Picot edging:

Ch 1

Working along the outside edge of bib, *sc in the next 3sts, ch3, slst in the third ch from hook (this creates a picot)* repeat between ** until you reach the end of the strap.

Do not fasten off.

Continue with the button loop instructions.

Button Loop:

Turn work so that you are working along the tip edge of the strap.

Row 1: Sc in the first two stitches, Ch6, Slst into the last st, turn.

Row 2: 6 sc in the ch6 space, Slst in the next sc, leave last sc unworked.

Fasten off.

Sew in loose ends.

Securely sew a large button onto bib, making sure it aligns with the button loop. Sew in loose ends.

If you prefer to decorate your bib, I recommend using appliques. Using buttons and other small objects could be a choking hazard so I suggest staying away from those types of embellishments.
