STORMY SKY SHAWL (CROCHET)

Stormy Sky is a lightweight, asymmetrical shawl, it’s dynamic and modern. Crocheted from the corner in the shape of a skewed triangle, it makes a great and fast project for that one very special skein of yarn. Alternation of sections creates nice texture and is rather easy to memorize. Tassels can be added to make corners look more polished.

This pattern can be used as a base for experiments, as neither yarn weight nor gauge is critical. The number of section repeats can be adjusted as well, depending on the desired size of the finished shawl.

YARN

  • 1 skein of Cloudborn Fibers Sock Twist (80% superwash merino, 20% polyamide 3.5oz./100g, 467yds/427 m) in Grey Heather.

  • Any fingering weight yarn will work fine. The pattern can be modified for another yarn weight and yardage.

HOOK

  • US G6/4mm hook or the size needed to obtain gauge

  • For any other yarn: use the hook at least three sizes up from stated on the label to keep fabric airy and light

GAUGE

  • 14 sts and 11 rows in 4”/10cm in double crochet, blocked

  • Is not crucial and can be changed to fit the desired yarn

FINISHED SIZE (BLOCKED)

  • Length (wingspan): 60”/152cm

  • Width: 26”/66cm

Notes

  • The shawl is crocheted from the right corner with increases at the end of RS rows and at the beginning of WS rows.

  • Row count is included in the pattern. The usual text corresponds to the sample shawl. The text in Italic is added for your convenience and can be used for additional rows depending on the yarn/gauge/desired size of a shawl.

  • If you’d like to make tassels, save yarn for them in advance: 2 tassels require approximately 26ft (8m). Here is the Tassel Tutorial.

BODY OF A SHAWL

The shawl is crocheted using 4 Stripe Patterns in this order:
2 rows: Open Stitch Stripe
2 rows: DC Stripe 1
4 rows: Mesh Stripe
4 rows: DC Stripe 2

  • The number of repetitions may vary depending on the yarn, gauge, and desired size of the shawl. In the row count, the usual text corresponds to the sample shawl. The text in Italic is added for your convenience and can be used for additional rows.

  • Regardless of the yarn choice or gauge, the last stripe of the shawl has to be a DC Stripe. This will help keep the shape of the finished garment.

STRIPE PATTERNS

OPEN STITCH STRIPE (2 rows, +2sts)

R1 (RS): Ch6, (ch1, skip 1 stitch; insert the hook from left to right around the post of next stitch, pull the loop and ch6; pull the 7th chain “link” through the loop on the hook)x until 1 last st;
ch1, insert the hook from left to right around the post of last stitch, pull the loop and ch6; pull the 7th chain “link” through the loop on the hook.

The number of sts at the top of R1 should be 1 more than in the previous row.
The number of vertical columns in R1 can be calculated as half the number of sts of the previous row.
For example, after completing Set Up there should be 12 sts in the last row. That gives ½ X 12 + 1 = 6 + 1 = 7 columns.

R2 (WS): ch2 (=1 sc), 2 sc tfl in first stitch, 1 sc tfl in each st until end.   //+ 1 stitch

DC STRIPE 1 (2 rows, +2sts)

R1 (RS): ch3 (=1 dc), 1 dc in each st until 1 last st, 2 dc in last st   //+ 1 stitch
R2 (WS): ch3 (=1 dc), 2 dc in first stitch, 1 dc in each st until end   //+ 1 stitch

MESH STRIPE (4 rows, +2sts)

R1 (RS): (ch5, skip 1 stitch, 1 sc in next stitch)x until 1 last st; ch5, 1sc in last st
The number of chains in R1 can be calculated as ½ x(number of sts of the previous row)+1.
R2 (WS): (ch5, 1 sc into the middle of the chain below)x until end
R3 (RS): as R2
R4 (WS): ch3 (=1 dc), 2 sc into the middle of the chain below; (1 dc into a sc of a previous row, 1 sc into the middle of the chain below)x until the end, then one more sc into the same stitch as the last one.   //+2sts

DC STRIPE 2 (4 rows, +4sts)

R1 (RS): ch3 (=1 dc), 1 dc in each st until 1 last st, 2 dc in last st   //+ 1 stitch
R2 (WS): ch3 (=1 dc), 2 dc in first stitch, 1 dc in each st until end   //+ 1 stitch
R3 (RS): as R1
R4 (WS): as R2.

FINISHING

Regardless of the yarn choice or gauge the last stripe of the shawl has to be a DC Stripe (1 or 2). This will help keep the shape of the finished garment.
Cut yarn leaving appr.8”(20cm) tail and pull it through the loop of the last stitch.
Wash the shawl in 30°C (86F) water and block into shape. Moderate to intense stretching is recommended to open up the lace stripes and dc stitches.
Make 2 tassels appr. 3”(7.5cm) long and secure them with the ends of working yarn at the beginning and end of the shawl. Here is the Tassel Tutorial.  Hide the ends of yarn in the tassels.
