Crochet Owl Hat- Free Pattern
I love this owl hat pattern. This is one of the first hat patterns that I mastered. I am sure that I have a picture here somewhere of my now 13 year old son wearing this hat. He was about 5, at the time. I had made that one in blue. This is a really fun to make in different colors and it works up very quickly. The eyes and the nose are easy to make, as well. I like to top the heads of the owls off with some hair tufts. I am planning to make a bunch of these this winter! This hat is an older child or adult size. It fits my 8 year old and myself.
So on to the free pattern.

The yarn I used was a variegated yarn. This is a good project for any scraps that you may have around. I can usually get 2 hats out of one skein. Here are some ideas on some yarns to pick if you don’t have some at home.
Other Materials Used
White, Black and Yellow Yarn
Scissors
Terms Used
Ch- Chain
Sc- Single Crochet
Dc- Double Crochet
Pattern
Row 1: Magic circle and put 8 Dc in the magic circle. Alternatively, you can chain 4 and then place 8 dc in the fourth ch from hook. Chain 2.
Row 2: Dc two dc in each dc around. At the end, you will have 16 dc. Ch 2.
Row 3: ( Dc two in first dc, dc 1 in next.) Repeat what is in parenthesis around. (24 dc) Ch. 2.
Row 4: (Dc two in first dc, dc 1 in next, dc 1 in the next.) Repeat what is in the parenthesis around. (32 dc) Ch. 2
Row 5: (Dc two in the first dc, dc 1 in next, dc 1 in next, dc 1 in next.) Repeat what is in the parenthesis around. (40 dc)
Row 6: (Dc two in the first dc, dc 1 in next, dc 1 in next, dc 1 in next, dc in next.) Repeat what is in the parenthesis around. (48 dc)
Rows 7-13: Dc around. You will have 48 stitches on each round.
For Ear Flaps
Row 1: In any sc ch 2, dc 7.
Row 2: Turn, Chain 2, dc 2 together, dc 5. (6)
Row 3: Turn, Chain 2, dc 2 together, dc 4. (5)
Row 4: Turn, chain 2, dc 3 together, dc 3. (4)
Row 5: Turn, chain 2, dc 2 together, dc 2. (3)
Row 6: Turn, chain 2, dc 2 together, dc 1. (2)
Row 7: Turn, chain 2, dc 2 tog, end off.
For Second Ear Flap
Count 23 stitches from the beginning of the first flap. Slip stitch into the 23rd stitch and ch 2, dc 7.
Repeat Rows 2-7 to make the second ear flap. Finish off.
Sc around the entire hat including the flaps. Put 3 sc in the triangle flap points.
For Eyes (Complete 2)
With Black
Row 1: Magic circle. Dc 9 in the magic circle.
Switch to White
Row 2: Ch. 2, dc 2 in each dc.
Row 3: Ch. 2, dc 2 in each dc, dc in next around. Finish off.
Sew the eyes according to the picture.
Nose
With Yellow
Row 1: Ch. 7, skip first ch, hdc across. (6 hdc)
Row 2: Ch. 2, hdc across. (5 hdc)
Row 3: Ch. 2, hdc across. (4 hdc)
Row 4: Ch. 2, hdc across. (3 hdc)
Row 5: Ch. 2, hdc across. (2 hdc)
Row 6: Ch 2, hdc last two together.
Finish off.
Sew nose on according to picture.
For Tassels
Cut 12 pieces of the main hat color. These will be cut at about 36 inches. Pull them through the bottom of the hat where it makes a point at the end of the flap. Pull the group of yarn half way through. Then, braid the tassel. Knot at the bottom of the braid. Repeat on the other side.
For Hair Tufts
Cut 6 pieces of yarn about 10 inches long. Feed into the hat, at the top about half way through. Look at the picture for placement. Tie in a knot. Cut to the length you desire. Repeat on the other side.
Tuck in all lose ends and you are done!
