How to Crochet an Octopus Amigurumi
I love these little amigurumi octopi! They are so stinking cute! They are pretty easy to make. You only need to know how to do the single crochet stitch and chains. I worked up this one in a rainbow striping yarn from Red Heart. But of course, any color would be super cute! These are popular for babies. The only thing I would change for a baby is to make the eyes out of yarn or felt just for safety. I made this pattern so the the legs are attached as you go so that you don’t need to sew them on later. Sometimes I just don’t feel like attaching all of those pieces! So, here is the pattern! Materials
The yarn I used was the Red Heart Super Saver Retro Stripes. This is one of my favorite Yarns! It is so pretty! I love the neon stripes!!
Abbreviations
Sc- Single Crochet
Sc 2 tog- Single Crochet the 2 stitches together (decrease)
Ch- Chain
Step By Step Instructions
Row 1: Magic circle, place 8 sc in the circle. Do not join at the beginning. We will be working in the round in this pattern. I like to use a stitch marker for this.
Row 2: Place 2 sc in each sc around. At the end, you will have 16 sc.
Row 3: Sc in first sc, 2 sc in the next sc. Do this pattern around. At the end, you will have 24 sc.
Row 4: Sc in the first sc, sc in the next sc, 2 sc in the next sc. Do this pattern around. At the end, you will have 32 sc.
Row 5: Sc in the first sc, sc in the next sc, sc in the next sc, 2 sc in the next sc. Do this pattern around. At the end, you will have 40 sc.
Row 6- Row 16: Sc around. You can place your safety eyes between rows 8 and 9. I placed them about 1 inch apart. If you want to place a smile or any other face details you could add them at this time with a yarn needle and embroidery floss if you want!
Row 17: Sc in the first 4 stitches, sc 2 tog, do this pattern around. At the end you will have 32 sc.
Row 18: Sc around.
Row 19: Sc in the first 3 stitches, sc 2 tog. do this pattern around. At the end, you will have 24 sc.
Row 20: Sc around.
Row 21: Sc in the first 2 stitches, sc 2 tog. Do this pattern around. At the end, you will have 16 sc.
Row 22: Sc around.
Row 23: Sc in the first stitch, sc 2 tog. Do this pattern around. At the end you will have 8 sc.
Row 24: Sc around. Stuff the octopus. You will not sew it shut until after you create the tentacles.
Row 25: At the end of row 24, you will turn your work sideways to work on the “tentacles”. You will ch 40 for the first tentacle. At the end, in the second ch from the hook, sc 3 sc in each ch across. The 3 sc will create the curl of the tentacle. When you get back to the beginning, slip stitch to the next sc. Repeat the chain 40 and the sc 3 in each stitch across. Do this for each of 8 tentacles. Slip stitch to the next stitch after each tentacle.
At the end of row 25, you will sew the bottom of the octopus shut. Make sure you have stuffed him how you want. Tuck in any loose ends and your octopus is complete!
