Crochet A Pumpkin 2 Ways

As I have mentioned many times before, pumpkins are one of my favorite things about the fall season. They are all unique. They have a variety of colors, and they are so fun to carve! It was only natural for me to make this post, and I had a lot of fun doing it. In this post, you will learn two different methods to make a pumpkin. I have also included two types of stems to compliment them. So get comfy, grab your supplies, maybe a snack, and let’s get started!

The first pumpkin we will be making is worked in amigurumi style. This means that we will be working in continuous rounds with a stitch marker. We will start with making the body of the pumpkin and then creating the ridges after. Last but not least, we will make the stem (that is also made in continuous rounds) and sew it on top. The materials and pattern are written below.

Materials:

• Red Heart Super Saver brand in the color Pumpkin.
• Red Heart Super Saver brand in the color Cafe Latte.
• 3.5 mm crochet hook.
• Stuffing
• Yarn/tapestry needle. I used a regular-sized and a 5-inch needle.
• Scissors
• Pins (optional)

Abbreviations:

st (sts) – stitch (stitches)

mc – magic circle (ring)

ch – chain

sl st – slip stitch

sc – single crochet

sc inc – single crochet increase

invdec – invisible decrease

Rnd – round

** – repeat

() – The total number of stitches at the end of each round.

The Body Of The Pumpkin:

-Work in the color Pumpkin-

Rnd 1: sc 6 in a mc (6)

Rnd 2: *sc inc* x6 (12)

Rnd 3: *sc 1, sc inc* x6 (18)

Rnd 4: *sc 2, sc inc* x6 (24)

Rnd 5: *sc 3, sc inc* x6 (30)

Rnd 6: *sc 4, sc inc* x6 (36)

Rnd 7: *sc 5, sc inc* x6 (42)

Rnd 8: *sc 6, sc inc* x6 (48)

Rnd 9-21: sc in every st (48)

Rnd 22: *sc 6, invdec* x6 (42)

Rnd 23: *sc 5, invdec* x6 (36)

Rnd 24: *sc 4, invdec* x6 (30)

-Start Stuffing-

Rnd 25: *sc 3, invdec* x6 (24)

Rnd 26: *sc 2, invdec* x6 (18)

Rnd 27: *sc 1, invdec* x6 (12)

Rnd 28: invdec x6 (6)

Fasten it off leaving an extra-long tail about 25-30 inches (63.5-76.2 cm). Close the remaining hole but do not cut the yarn tail. If you do not know how to do this, check out my blog post on this topic here.

Creating the Ridges of the Pumpkin:

Step 1: Take your 5-inch yarn needle and attach the yarn from the body of your pumpkin. You can use a regular yarn needle if you don’t have a 5-inch one. Insert the needle into the top of the pumpkin and feed it through to the top of the pumpkin.

Step 2: Pull tight and bring the needle back to the bottom of the pumpkin. This should leave you with a piece of yarn wrapped around the outside of the pumpkin. As you go back through the pumpkin with your needle, pull the yarn tight. Make sure you pull tight enough to create the ridge, but not tight enough to break the yarn.

Step 3: You will repeat the process of feeding it through to the top of the pumpkin and bringing it back to the bottom to create the ridges. Repeat this process about four more times or often as you want.

The Stem (Type 1):

-Work in the color Cafe Latte-

Rnd 1: sc 6 in a mc (6)

Rnd 2: sc in every st (6)

Rnd 3: *sc 1, sc inc* x3 (9)

Rnd 4: sc in every st (9)

Rnd 5: *sc 2, sc inc* x3 (12)

Rnd 6: sc in every st (12)

Fasten off leaving a long enough tail for sewing.

Finishing:

Step 1: Sew the stem to the top of the pumpkin. I used pins to hold the stem in place as I sewed. Stuff lightly as you sew.

Step 2: Weave in all ends.

The second type of pumpkin we will be making is more of a classic crochet style. The body of the pumpkin will be made with turning rows with a chain at the beginning of each row. Then we will sew the ends together, stuff, and repeat a similar process to that of the first pumpkin for the ridges. This pumpkin pattern includes a different stem than the first pumpkin. The materials and pattern are written below.

Materials:

• Red Heart Super Saver brand in the color Pumpkin.
• Red Heart Super Saver brand in the color Medium Thyme.
• 3.5 mm crochet hook.
• Stuffing
• Yarn/tapestry needle. I used a regular sized and a 5-inch needle.
• Scissors
• Pins (optional)

Abbreviations:

st (sts) – stitch (stitches)

mc – magic circle (ring)

ch – chain

sl st – slip stitch

sc – single crochet

blo – back loop

Rnd – round

** – repeat

() – The total number of stitches at the end of each round.

The Body of the Pumpkin:

Note: Start with a long tail to help with sewing later on. Work in the color Pumpkin.

Row 1: Ch 22. Sc in the 2nd ch from hook and in every remaining ch (21)

Rows 2-33: Ch 1 and sc in the blo of every st (21)

The body should measure about 4 x 7 inches (10 x 17 cm).

Rnd 34: Fold the piece in half and sl st along the side of the piece.

Fasten off leaving an extra-long tail.

Finishing the Body of the Pumpkin:

Step 1: Close one end of the body with the shorter yarn tail. Do this by using the method you’d use to close a remaining hole from an amigurumi project. After this step, your pumpkin should look like a mini hat.

Step 2: Turn the piece inside out and stuff. Stuff quite firmly but not enough to distort the pumpkin. After you finish stuffing, close the top hole in the same fashion we closed the bottom hole.

Step 3: Attach the yarn tail to the yarn needle. Insert the needle through the top (the same side the yarn tail is sticking out) of the pumpkin to the bottom. Insert your needle back through the bottom to the top and pull the yarn tight. You should not have yarn on the outside of the pumpkin, we are just pulling the top and bottom of the pumpkin towards the middle. Repeat as many times as you’d like or until you like the way your pumpkin looks.

The Stem (Type 2):

-Work in the color Medium Thyme-

Rnd 1: sc 6 in a mc (6)

Rnd 2: sc inc x6 (12)

Rnd 3: sc in the blo of every st (12)

Rnd 4-6: sc in every st (12)

Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.

Finishing:

Step 1: Sew the stem to the top of the pumpkin. I used pins to hold the stem in place as I sewed. Stuff lightly as you sew.

Step 2: Weave in all ends.
