Halloween Pumpkin Sweater Crochet Pattern for American Girl and 18″ Dolls

Materials

● #4 Worsted Weight Yarn

● F (3.75 mm) hook or size needed to obtain gauge

● ½” diameter buttons (5)

● Sewing thread to match and needle

● Row counter

● Yarn needle

● Scissors

● White-scrap amount of yarn

Stitch Abbreviations

● Sc – single crochet

● Hdc – half double crochet

● Dc – double crochet

● Dec – decrease

● Inc – increase

● St – stitch

● Sl St – slip stitch

● Ch – chain

● Fpdc – front post double crochet

● Bpdc – back post double crochet

Notes & Tips

● Be sure to keep your yarn pulled to the back of the work when changing colors.

● Make secure, firm stitches. Follow gauge for correct size of clothing.

22 sc over 25 rows equals 4” square

*Important Color Changing Instructions*

When directed to change colors, insert the hook and draw up a loop with the original color first, then loop the new color over the hook and pull through the loops on the hook. The actual color change on the sweater will not appear until the next st.

Example: when working in orange, change to white: First, insert hook and yarn over with orange and pull up a loop, then wrap white around the hook and pull through the two loops on the hook. The stitch itself will be orange; however, this is counted as your first white stitch. (Images below).

With F hook and orange, ch 42.

Row 1. Hdc in the 3rd ch from hook and in each chain across, ch 2, turn. (40 hdc)

Row 2. *fpdc, bpdc. Repeat from * across. (bpdc in the ch st for the last st), ch 1, turn. (40 sts)

Row 3. Sc in the next 7 sts, inc in the next 5 sts, sc in the next 15 sts, inc in the next 5 sts, sc in the next 8 sts, ch 1, turn. (50 sc)

Row 4. *sc in the next 4 sts, inc. Repeat from * across, ch 1, turn. (60 sc)

Row 1. Create a slip knot and pick up 39 sts along the opposite back opening edge of the sweater starting from the bottom, ch 1, turn. (39 sc)

Sleeves

With F hook and orange, create a slip knot and pick up the center stitch under the arm for either sleeve.

Row 1-16. Sc in each st across. Ch 1, turn. (23 sc) 

Row 17. Sc in each st across. Ch 2, turn. (23 sc) 

Row 18. Hdc in each st across. Ch 2, turn. (23 hdc)

Row 19. *fpdc in the next st, bpdc in the next st. Repeat from * across. (23 sts)

Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing (about twice the length of the sleeves). Turn the sleeve inside out and whipstitch the seam. Weave in ends.

Repeat instructions for the other sleeve.

Sew the 5 buttons on the edge of the back of the sweater in coordination with the button holes.
