Tunisian crochet is my favorite crochet technique right now. It’s a beautiful and versatile technique that can be used to create a variety of projects and is relatively easy to learn, even for beginners!

When I began learning and trying out Mosaic crochet, one of my first projects was crafting a scarf, and I found the repetitive pattern so fun to make. It’s a cozy accessory in the colors I chose, and it only required weaving in four ends! The yarn I used has been discontinued, but there are plenty of alternative options available. This design can shine with various gradient or solid color combinations.

The yarn

Before we get started on this Tunisian mosaic scarf crochet pattern, let’s talk about the materials you’ll need. You’ll need fingering weight yarn in two colors. If you can’t find KnitPicks Stroll Gradient – which is now discontinued then, KnitPicks Chroma or KnitPicks Palette are great alternatives.

I found that fingering weight [4-ply / 1 / super fine], gave the best look and feel for the Priya mosaic scarf. KnitPicks Chroma is a combination of superwash wool + nylon and KnitPicks Palette is 100% wool. Both of these yarns come in a multitude of colors. Really!

Tunisian crochet hooks

You’ll also need a Tunisian crochet hook, size H/8 (5 mm). The pattern is designed to be adjustable, so making a gauge square beforehand is not absolutely important.

I used a hook from my interchangeable Denise hook set to make the Priya mosaic scarf.

In Tunisian crochet, we usually use a hook that is at least 2 sizes larger than the hook recommended for the yarn. You can read a review of all the hooks I use here.

Pro Tips and Tricks

Tunisian Crochet can be tricky, especially when you’re learning a new technique – like mosaic. So, I wanted to include some tips and tricks to help you along the way:

• Take your time and don’t rush. Crochet is meant to be a relaxing hobby, so enjoy the process!
• Keep your tension consistent throughout your project. This will help to create a neat and even fabric.
• If you’re having trouble picking up the stitches, try using a hook that is one size larger. This will give you more space to work with.
• To create a neat edge, insert your hook under both the vertical bar and the chain-like strand at the end of the row when you’re working the last stitch. This will help to prevent your edges from curling.
• When working with two colors of yarn, carry the unused color along the back of your work. This will help to prevent the yarn from getting tangled.
• If you make a mistake, don’t worry! It’s easy to fix mistakes in Tunisian Mosaic Crochet. Simply undo the stitches until you reach the mistake, and then try again.
• Don’t be afraid to experiment with different color combinations. My Priya Mosaic Scarf looks great in bold colors, but you could also try muted neutral combinations to create your own unique look.

Sizing

Priya mosaic scarf size: 13” (33 cms) x 60” (152 cms)
This scarf is made with a mosaic pattern repeat of 12 rows and 12 stitches.

To adjust its size:
– Width – add / remove stitches in multiples of 12.
– Height – add / remove rows in multiples of 12.

While I wish my scarf was a tad longer, I had to stop due to running out of yarn. Check the adjustments section if you want to add more rows. Although the yarn I used isn’t available anymore, there are loads of other choices! This vibrant and colorful scarf is sure to uplift any outfit.

What you will need (with clickable affiliate links)

1. Yarn: Fingering weight yarn in 2 colors. I used Stroll Gradient by KnitPicks – one skein each of Dragon Breath Gradient and Pet Rock. This yarn is discontinued now, KnitPicks Chroma or KnitPicks Palette would be great alternatives.

Yarn requirements are just estimates. I stopped making my scarf when I ran out of yarn. If you choose to make a different size or if your yarn, hook size, crochet style, or gauge differ, you might need more / less yarn than mentioned above.

Experience Level

Easy – The pattern expects basic knowledge of starting and ending a Tunisian crochet project and how to make the two stitches used in Tunisian Mosaic Crochet.

Gauge

18 rows of 19 stitches in the mosaic pattern is a 4” square.

Gauge isn’t crucial for this pattern; feel free to use any yarn and matching hook of your choice without altering the pattern. However, the final size of your scarf might differ based on your yarn, crocheting style and tension.

Crochet Abbreviations

1. ch – chain
2. fs – First Stitch – Skip the first vertical bar of the previous row (the one right under the one on the hook). The loop on the hook will count as the first stitch for every row. 
3. ls – Last Stitch – Pick up the two vertical bars of the last stitch of the previous row, yarn over, pull through both the vertical bars into a loop on the hook.
4. tss – Tunisian Simple Stitch– Insert hook in the vertical bar, yarn over, pull up a loop on the hook.
5. etss – Front Post Extended Tunisian Simple Stitch – Locate the stitch that’s two rows below the next stitch. Pick up the two vertical bars (front and back bars) from above the return pass chain, yarn over, pull through, chain 1.
6. FR – Foundation Row
7. BOR – Bind off Row

Pattern Notes

1. This pattern is written in English / US terms.
2. This pattern uses the Overlay Tunisian Mosaic Crochet technique.
3. Tip: Add reminders for visual inspection of your scarf after every few rows. This is easy to forget and adding a note to remind yourself works really well in catching errors early.
4. The color is indicated at the start of each row within square brackets [].
5. For size adjustments, please consult the ‘Sizing’ section.
6. The instructions are only for the forward pass. The return pass for every row is the same.
   • ch1, (yo, pull through two loops)* until one loop remains on the hook.

Row 1 (FR): This is the Foundation Row.
With C1, chain 62 (multiple of 12 plus 2).
This is the foundation row, make the stitches in the back loops of the chain.

This will be the bind off row. You will make a slip stitch every time you pick up a loop on your hook. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Blocking

I recommend blocking your Priya Tunisian mosaic scarf with your preferred method of blocking – before use.
