My computer went to the doctors

Hi all!

I have learned quite a bit about computers since I started working at my uncle’s computer shop but nothing prepared me for what happened last Thursday.

I brought my computer in to run some virus scans and other routine maintenance while I was holding down the fort. After completing few scans, I had to restart my computer and a screen came up upon shut down saying that I needed a BIOS update for my computer. Basically that just means that the computer needed to update the code that makes all of its pieces work together. The BIOS finished updating and suddenly there was just a black screen. I thought maybe the computer was just finishing up the BIOS update so I left it alone.

Three hours later, the blank black screen was still idling sitting there. So I took a closer look. Maybe my computer shut down instead of restarting. Nope. The power light was on. So was the little light on my wifi button. I knew that this was not a good sign but I tried to remain optimistic. I powered down the computer, gave it a few minutes and powered it back on. Same blank black screen. So I tried another trick. Same blank black screen. Tried another and no new result. The blank black screen sat there mocking me.

I turned toward the only other option I knew, an internet search for the problem. So I keyed in my problem to Google and searched. My heart sank. The BIOS update had corrupted my computer so the screen wouldn’t work. There was nothing I could do except call the manufacturer and send my computer in to be fixed.

I was so angry that the company had allowed this to happen. All over their forums, there were people posting about this issue but they kept the update available for people to download. It was so wrong. A warning to you all, never update the BIOS without researching the update first or you might be without a computer for two weeks like me.

Anyways, my unfortunate computer’s illness is the reason for the lack of blogs. I really don’t like blogging on my phone, the method I am using now, and I don’t want to take up too much time on my parents computer since they need to use it too. I will try to blog when I can but there probably will not be very many over the next two weeks.

Feeling Lost

Hi all!

I know that my attention to my blog has been quite lacking lately and I think I can finally explain why.

Since the new year, I have been in a funk. I have not felt like crocheting. I have been completely uninspired. And without working on any crochet projects or having any inspiration, it has been really difficult to figure out what I should write for my two posts a week.

This weekend, I took some time to think about what has really been eating away at me. It’s pretty obvious once you take the time to think about it. Since I graduated last May, I haven’t been very successful at finding a good job or at figuring out a direction to go in life. I put so much work (and money) into my degree and now I just don’t know what to do. On top of the pressure I was already putting on myself to find a job/career, my student loans started to kick in in December and it’s impact on my bank account set in this month.

I never saw myself in this position. I never expected to feel like such a failure. I thought I would be successful after college and now I just feel like I’m just so lost. I am too afraid to go back to get some sort of graduate degree since I don’t know what I would like to do and since I don’t want to put myself further in debt.

I know you might be thinking, surely if I am feeling so much pressure I could just find any salary job and do that until I figure out what to do. And you would be right, but I am finding it so unbelievably hard to keep myself motivated to apply for jobs that I know I’m not going to be happy in. I never wanted to be the type of person who lives for the weekend. Being happy at my job is very important to me since I don’t find money to be a great motivator. I wouldn’t mind taking a job that didn’t have the best pay as long as I loved what I was doing.

Crocheting and this blog was filling that void and giving my life some purpose. Goals to work toward. But in this new year, I haven’t been able to see it that way. I have been so focused on my failures in life that I have been completely distracted. I want to work past this slump. I want to crochet more and become more regular on my blog again and to stop feeling so down on myself. I really hope you guys can stick with me through this rough patch.

P.S. I’m sorry if there a lot of typos. I wrote this from my cell phone while laying in bed.

I didn’t fall…much

Hi All!

I hope you all had a great weekend and hopefully a not-so-terrible Monday. My weekend was fantastic! Remember how I mentioned I was going snowboarding? Well it was a total success! I managed to get down the mountain the first time without falling too much and by the third or fourth time, I managed to get down without falling at all! Sorry for all the exclamation points but I am so proud! I wish I had taken some pictures or videos with my camera but my boyfriend didn’t feel like having a photo shoot.

The day after, I could barely move but I figured it was kinda like my badge of honor. I can’t wait to go again. Next time, my goal is to learn to stop (and maybe learn to get off the lift without falling but we’ll take it one step at a time =P).

Not much crocheting happened this week. Nor was there a lot of organizing. Maybe it’s because I haven’t had much time to myself lately, and when I do, I take the opportunity for more sleep. For instance, instead of crocheting on the car ride home from Jack Frost Mountain, I got comfy and passed out.

Hopefully I’ll have some time tomorrow to get some stuff done but it depends on the weather. You see, there is a huge snowstorm that came in early today and will be in the area until about 3 or 4 AM; therefore, there could be a SNOW DAY! We are supposed to get about 10 – 12″ by the end of it although I don’t know how true that actually is. But hopefully we get enough that the roads stay bad and I don’t have to go to work. Don’t get me wrong, I really love working at my uncle’s shop, but I want to feel like a kid again and get a snow day. Granted, I probably won’t go outside and make a snowman like I did was little, but a little time to myself would be wonderful.

the heidi cowlI did complete one project so far this week. It was the “Heidi Cowl” by Melody Logan on Ravelry (it’s free!). It was a simple project but it came out really nice. I don’t usually use bulky weight yarn, but I had two balls of Bernat Alpaca yarn that I have had in my stash forever. I almost finished the whole project with one ball but the last round required yarn from the second. Now, I want to find another project that I can complete with the remaining yarn to match the cowl. I’m thinking I will probably make a hat. If you have any suggestions for free bulky yarn patterns, please let me know.

What day is it?

Hi All!

I am so sorry that I forgot to post yesterday. I honest-to-God forgot what day it was yesterday. I was quite aware it was Tuesday all day at work and when I got home my brain was like “Nope, sorry I’m off the job”. It wasn’t until this morning that I realized that I had forgotten.

This week has been so stressful so far (which is probably why I became so absent-minded). One of my coworkers (mind you there are only 5 people who work at my uncle’s shop, only 3 that work just about every day) had a family emergency on Monday morning and my boss was out of the office Monday and Tuesday. So there I was, the only person in the shop, and the employee with the least knowledge about computers on our busiest days of the week. It was basically a nightmare. But I got through it! YAY!

Unfortunately, all the stress made me so tired that I haven’t done much of anything outside of work. I have been organizing a little bit but the couch has just been so comfy and welcoming that its been hard to leave it. I did get my new 6-cube organizer that I bought on sale from Target for 20.00 all set up and started to fill it. Here are two pictures of the progress I made (or lack there of).

IMG_0176

Obviously, my room will not be organized by Friday. In fact, on Friday, I am going to be going on a small trip with my boyfriend. I am going to learn to snowboard. I really hope I like it considering I hated skiing but I think that was mostly because I didn’t really know how and my friends convinced me to leave the lesson (I was young and naive and easily caved under peer pressure). That being said I will probably not have time/the strength to write a post when we get back. I will try to write something on Saturday (maybe I’ll even have a-little-crocheted something to show from the ride).

Becoming Nocturnal & Organized

Hi all!

Sorry this blog is a little late but I was spending some time with my boyfriend and didn’t get to write this until he went to play some more video games before bed. Yes I realize that it’s about 2:30 in the morning as I am writing this and no I am not in bed yet. My boyfriend is making me nocturnal. Which in a way is really great for my blog and getting other things done in my life but it’s not so great for my job cause I’m always zombified when I first go in.

I really need to stop staying up quite so late, especially now that I will be working two jobs! That’s right, I got the job at JoAnn’s. Granted it is only a “seasonal” position to set up a new store nearby for its opening in March. The interviewer that I talked to said that they will be hiring some of the seasonal workers for part-time positions and you can bet that I am gonna be gunning for that position. Unfortunately, my blog may suffer a little once my job at JoAnn’s starts (in February) because I will have to get used to working 2 part-time jobs but I am going to try to adapt quickly and get my blog back to normal.

I don’t have a lot to report besides the new job for this week. I have been taking a break from crocheting and have been trying to get my room organized which is really a lot harder than you would think. I was first trying to organize my room using stuff found from dollar stores like a lot of blogs focus on however this proved to be way more difficult than they made it seem. Either they have amazing dollar stores near them, or I am just not that good at seeing the potential uses of a dollar store item. I decided to go with the easier, more traditional method of organizing my room; in other words, my organization project is going to cost quite a bit more than I originally wanted it to. I bought a few cheap items from various dollar stores on my initial excursion (granted not one of them were $1 items). Then, I decided to use Target and Amazon to do most of my shopping. You would think that stores like Target would be a lot more reliable with their merchandize but now I’m not so sure. You see, I found this great 6 cube wire organizer from Target that would be perfect for holding my yarn and it was on sale to boot. So I ordered it, picked it up from the store, brought it home to assemble, and realized that it was not the correct organizer despite the box it was enclosed in. Someone must have returned the item and put the 4 cube wire organizer in the box instead of the 6 cube. UGH! I just feel like organizing my room should not be this difficult! I should be able to go out, find what I need, and finish my project. But I’m going to try and be optimistic and hopefully finish my organizing by next week. If you have any tips for organizing, please feel free to share.

Now I must be off to bed.

New toy!!!

Hi all!

I hope you guy are all doing well and staying warm despite this polar vortex. I definitely underestimated or cold it really was and thought my fingers were going to freeze off. I ended up wearing my winter jacket all throughout work because the poor little heater we have in my uncle’s shop couldn’t keep up with the cold and kept blowing out cold air.

On top of the bitter weather, I think I might be getting sick. My mom was really sick after Christmas and I thought that I had thankfully managed to dodge that bullet. But, I was exhausted all day and I passed out on the couch after dinner. I had to wake up so I could write this post before I go to bed for the night, and now I am fighting through a massive headache and body ache.

Let’s hope that my body can just push through it because I have an interview on Thursday for Jo-Ann Fabrics! Working toward Resolution #4. Booyah! My mom is a little afraid that if I do end up getting the job that I will end up spending my entire paycheck there. While I hope that I have more self-control than that, she could be right; after all, my name is Colleen and I am a craft addict, with a particular propensity for buying yarn. But seriously, I think I can handle it.

Finally, the main topic of my post today…

DSCN0788

My new yarn ball spinner! TADA!

It just came in yesterday and I was so excited I wound yarn from about 8:00 PM – 11:00 PM. It was on my Christmas list but I didn’t get it so I just had to buy myself a belated Christmas present using some of the gift cards I got. Let me tell you, I am so happy that I got it. I cannot stand when yarn skeins don’t have the option to pull from the center. This completely eliminates that problem! Also, it will be very useful for when I am trying to organize my room.DSCN0789

I bought this winder on Etsy from Stanwood Needlecraft for $43.99. It’s a large ball winder so it can handle up to 10 oz of yarn. I was considering buying the Jumbo Yarn Ball Winder made by Lacis, but I thought the one made by Stanwood Needlecraft looked more sturdy. Now that I have it, you can definitely tell that this yarn ball winder was built to last. Also according to reviews of the Lacis winder, it only will fit on tables that are 1.5″ thick but the Stanwood Needlecraft winder will fit on tables that are just over 2″ thick. My tables aren’t that thick so either one would have worked but why not go for the product that has the wider range of thickness just in case it does become an issue.

DSCN0790There is one semi-con to the Stanwood Needlecraft winder, the shipping cost. At first, I was a little upset with the $15.00 cost to ship the winder from California to New Jersey which brought the total to about $59.00, but I cannot believe how fast it got to my house. I bought it late Friday Night and by Monday, it was setup on a tray table winding its little heart out. Looking back on it, the $15.00 shipping cost really wasn’t a big problem for me and I would buy this product again in a heartbeat, but I know that my family was turned off by the shipping price.

Well, I should go rest up for the night so that I can fight off this cold and be in tip-top shape for Thursday.

To stop being a tornado…

Hi All!

calvin-hobbes-new-years-resolutionsI hope your year has started off great. I have been thinking long and hard about what I want to accomplish this year and I think I’ve made the perfect (and hopefully do-able) list. Its made up of a mixture of personal goals and goals for my blog but I really wanted to share it with you. After all I do need witnesses otherwise I would have no one to answer to and they would all fall to the wayside.

1. To Stop being a tornado

Those that know me well, know that I am the least organized person. My father and mother often joke that I’m a tornado tearing apart everything in my path throughout the day. I guess its more acceptable when you are a child, not so much when you are 22 and living at home after having been away at school for 4 years.  My bedroom is always a disaster area, especially my desk. My mom, who is always very neat, hates it and is constantly getting on my case about it. In order to maintain a more peaceful relationship with her, I want to straighten up my room every other day, and I want to organize my yarn and crocheting stuff better. I want to stop being a tornado.

2. Be healthier

This does not mean that I want to go on a fad diet and lose weight. I just want to try to adopt a healthier lifestyle. I want to check out the new Retro Fitness nearby and join it or another gym nearby. Go to the gym Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays (unless my schedule changes due to #4). Cook more for myself and eat out less (no more than once a week). Don’t eat in front of the TV every meal/snack (Only one meal or snack a day). Drink less soda!!! Since I came home from college, my soda intake has gone up exponentially. I never used to drink soda at school because I didn’t want to pay for it and water was free. At home, my mom always keeps soda in the fridge for my dad and any guests that stop by (we stock up on a lot of soda for the holidays) so its way to easily accessible. I will from now on only drink a maximum of 1 soda a day.

3. Open an Etsy shop

In my About Me, I said that my goal is to make an Etsy shop and for whatever reason I haven’t actually done anything toward it besides brainstorming designs to publish on it. This year, I want to open it preferably by the end of this summer. I realize that it’s a big undertaking but I am determined to get my work out there. Because of this, there may not be a lot of free patterns coming out on the blog, at least not designed by me. I will probably take this time to design my own patterns and to practice crocheting. That mean’s there will be a lot of fellow crocheter’s patterns getting spotlights on the blog for a while. Hopefully, I will also be able to include a few tutorial/helpful information posts.

4. Get a new job

I’m not sure if I mentioned this before, but currently I am working for my uncle at his computer repair shop. It’s a nice part-time job but I can’t stay there for longer. My student loans are going to start catching up to me by the end of this year and I need to do something about it. I need to be in a position where there is the possibility of getting promoted and getting a salary. I know that I will be opening up my Etsy shop but that is more of a side job especially when I am just starting to get my name out there (there probably won’t be too much income considering how much competition there is out there). I could be wrong and my Etsy shop could take over and become my whole life but I can’t count on having that much luck.

5. Make a Facebook Fan Page and maintain it.

I will get a Facebook Fan page for this blog. This is something I plan to do ASAP but maintaining it is the real challenge. I am not very good at using my own Facebook or the twitter account that I use for this blog (truthfully, I don’t like twitter very much). The fan page will be a whole other story. I plan on posting links to any blog posts I like and possibly stuff that inspires me (and hopefully will inspire all of you).

6. Stop hording yarn

I actually can’t fit any more yarn in my closet. I buy it whenever there is a good deal but I almost never have a plan on how I’m going to use it; therefore, I almost never do. I want to use the yarn in my stash (so that I have room for more =P). A bunch of it is yarn that people have given me but are not my preferred yarn choices, such as Red Heart yarn (it kinda feels gross when you work with it for a while) and Homespun yarn (it’s so hard to work with).

7. Open up on my blog more

I have tried to keep my personal life and my blog separate for the few first months and I think that its weakening my blog. Not because I live such an extremely amazing life but simply because of the way I have to cautiously tip-toe around certain subjects. For instance, I feel like some of my blogs may have made me look a bit flaky since I didn’t get them done and I didn’t say my excuse cause it was due to my life outside of crocheting. I will try to open up a little more to you guys and hopefully you guys can open up to me too.

8. Watch my spending

This probably could go under “Be more organized” but I wanted to make it a separate resolution because its important. Since I graduated in May, I have been living life like I am still a teenager. Going to Michael’s whenever I want, spending money here and there, etc. While I am a fairly frugal person, I do have my weaknesses (yarn being #1). Time to become an adult (eek!) and start keeping track of my spending. I am going to make a spreadsheet, keep my receipts organized (and not shoved into the bottom of my purse), and start figuring out a budget.

9. Go to my first craft fair

This is another big step for me and my crocheting goals. I love craft fairs! But I haven’t actually participated in any craft fairs. Many of my family members have. including my cousin who also crochets. After I open my Etsy shop, I plan on selling some goods at a craft fair and spreading the word about my shop. I will attend at least one craft fair probably toward the end of the year (just in time for Christmas and scarf season!).

10. Watch less TV

I watch entirely too much TV. My whole family does in my opinion but its the only thing we do together. But we do it every night. From about 6 PM til about 11 PM, we have show after show to watch. It’s really upsetting to know that we have become mindless TV drones but at least I try to crochet during this time to keep my mind working. TV destroys my efficiency though. I crochet faster and make fewer mistakes when I’m sitting in my room listening to music instead of half paying attention to my project while I watch TV. So this year I am cutting my TV watching a bit. I only want to watch a maximum of 4 hours of TV a day and at least one day a week I will spend my usual time watching TV in my room crocheting diligently. It doesn’t sound like much but this is going to be really difficult for me because I feel so obligated to spend time with my family.

I know this seems like a lot of stuff. Only a few are really big goals and will probably take most of the year to complete. The others are simple habit changes that I have tried to make specific enough that it will be achievable.

Rest of the Christmas Patterns

2014-happy-new-year-wallpapersHi All!

I hope you all are as excited about the new year as I am. I can’t wait to see all of the new creations that my fellow crocheters come up with and to see what new projects I will create. I have a lot of things that I would like to improve on and implement in this new year but I would really appreciate some of your suggestions. Are there certain patterns you would like to see made? How about my style of writing? Would you all like to get to know me better or do you want me to stay focused on crocheting? Any input would be appreciated.

And before I forget, here are those patterns that I promised you all. I hope you all have a safe and happy New Year!

Snowflake Trivet

??????????I had a lot of ideas that centered around snowflakes this year and couldn’t decide which to make. Once I actually made the snowflake, the choice was pretty much made for me. It turned out a lot bigger than I had expected which left me only a few options: either a trivet or a place mat.

The Snowflake:

I used a H hook with Simple Soft yarn by Caron in White.

Ch 4. Sl st in first chain to make a ring.

Rnd 1: Ch 3. Work 14 Dc in ring. Sl st in top of ch 3

Rnd 2: Ch 3. Dc in same stitch. Dc twice in each stitch around. Sl st in top of ch 3.

Rnd 3: Ch 8. *Skip 2 stitches. Dc in next stitch. Ch 5. Repeat around from *. Sl st in ch 3.

Rnd 4: Ch 1. Sc in next stitch. *Sc in next stitch. 3 sc in next stitch. sc in next stitch. Work 2 single crochet together (sc2tog) over next 3 stitches (skip one in middle). Repeat until at last sc2tog. Instead of last sc2tog (since you don’t have enough room) sl st in first sc.

Rnd 5: Ch 10. *Skip 5 stitches. Dc in next stitch. Repeat around from *. Sl st in ch 3.

Rnd 6: Ch 1. Sc in next stitch. *Sc in next stitch. Sc in next stitch. 3 sc in next stitch. sc in next stitch. sc in next stitch. Work 2 single crochet together (sc2tog) over next 3 stitches (skip one in middle). Repeat until at last sc2tog. Instead of last sc2tog (since you don’t have enough room) sl st in first sc.

Rnd 7: Ch 4. Dc in same stitch. Ch 3. Skip 7 stitches. Dc in next stitch. Ch 1. *Dc in same stitch. Ch 1 Dc in Same stitch ch 3. Skip 7 stitches. Dc in next stitch ch 1. Repeat from * around. Sl st in ch 3.

Rnd 8: *Ch 8. Sl st in 4 chain from hook. Ch 3. Sl st in same stitch. Ch 3. Sl st in same stitch. Sl st in back of each of next 4 ch. Sl st in next stitch. Sl st in each of next 9 stitches. Repeat from * around. Sl st in first ch.

Rnd 9:Ch 1. Sc in same stitch. *Sc in each of next 3 stitches. work 5 sc in pivot. Work 5 sc in next pivot. Work 5 sc in next pivot. Work 1 sc in each of next 9 stitches. Work 3 sc in next stitch. Work 1 sc in each of next 4 stitches. Repeat from * around. Sl st in first sc.

??????????

Pad:

I used a H hook as well with a dark blue Simply Caron Yarn (it was an old yarn and I don’t have the label)

Ch 4. Sl st in first ch.

Rnd 1. Ch 3. work 15 dc in ring. Sl st in top of ch 3.

Rnd 2. Ch 3. Dc in same stitch. Work 2 dc in each stitch around. sl st in top of ch 3

Rnd 3. Ch 3. Dc in same stitch. Dc in next stitch. *2 Dc in next stitch. Dc in next stitch. Repeat from * around. Sl st in top of ch 3

Rnd 4: Ch 3. Dc in same stitch. Dc in each of next 2 stitches. *2 Dc in next stitch. Dc in each of next 2 stitches. Repeat from * around. Sl st in top of ch 3.

Rnd 5: Ch 3. Dc in same stitch. Dc in each of next 3 stitches. *2 Dc in next stitch. Dc in each of next 3 stitches. Repeat from * around. Sl st in top of ch 3.

Rnd 6: Ch 3. Dc in same stitch. Dc in each of next 4 stitches. *2 Dc in next stitch. Dc in each of next 4 stitches. Repeat from * around. Sl st in top of ch 3.

Rnd 7: Ch 3. Dc in same stitch. Dc in each of next 5 stitches. *2 Dc in next stitch. Dc in each of next 5 stitches. Repeat from * around. Sl st in top of ch 3.

Rnd 8: Ch 3. Dc in same stitch. Dc in each of next 6 stitches. *2 Dc in next stitch. Dc in each of next 6 stitches. Repeat from * around. Sl st in top of ch 3.

Rnd 9: Ch 3. Dc in same stitch. Dc in each of next 7 stitches. *2 Dc in next stitch. Dc in each of next 7 stitches. Repeat from * around. Sl st in top of ch 3.

Fasten off.

Sew the snowflake to the base.

Christmas Star Ornament

??????????

I used the same Darice cord as I did for the snowflake ornament but in gold and white. Unlike the snowflake ornament, I used a G hook (which is why I think the snowflake would look better if you use a G hook).

This ornament is pretty difficult to explain in words too so forgive me if this explanation is confusing.

Ch 4. Sl st in first ch to form ring.

Rnd 1: Ch 3. Work 15 dc into ring. sl st in top of ch 3.

Rnd 2: *Ch 9. Sl st in back of 2nd chain from hook. Sl st in the back of the next 7 ch. Sl st in next 2 stitches. Ch 4. Sl st in 2nd chain from hook. sl st in back of each of next 2 ch. sl st in next 2 stitches. Repeat around. Sl st in first ch.

Rnd 3: Ch 3. *Dc in next stitch. Hdc in next stitch. sc in next stitch. Sl st in next 3 stitches. Ch 1 . Sl st in next 3 stitches (the 3 slip stitches). sc in next stitch. Hdc in next stitch. Dc in next 2 stitches. (Now it should look symmetrical). Skip 2 stitches. Hdc in next stitch (in the first chain of ch 4 from previous round). Sc in next stitch. ch 1. Sc in next stitch. Hdc in next stitch. skip 2 stitches. Dc in next stitch. Repeat from * around. Do not do last Dc (since the ch 3 is in that spot) Sl st in top of ch 3. Fasten off.

Christmas Bangles

??????????I have always loved the idea of bangles. They always look so fashionable but I can’t stand all of the clanging. I also can’t stand the fact that if I wave my arm, they fly right off my hand. So I found a use for some of the old bangles that I have and never wear. Here is my solution:

The pattern is quite simple. I just single crocheted 9 rounds with three rounds completed around each bangle. Depending on the size of the bangles you may have to adjust this pattern but I think this will work for most.

I used a 1/2.75 hook and lace (the kind you use for friendship bracelets and sell for $0.40 at Michaels) in white, green, and red.

Start by using the red lace and ch 50. Sl st in first chain to create a ring.

Rnd 1: Ch 1. Sc in each chain around. Sl st in first sc.

Rnd 2: Ch 1 around the first bangle. Sc in same stitch. *Ch 1. Skip 1 stitch. Sc in next stitch. Repeat from * around. Sl st in first sc.

Rnd 3: Ch 1. Sc in each sc and ch 1 space around (49 sc).

Repeat the 3 rounds two more times. Once in white then in green.
