Supplies:

Size F hook (3.75mm), 240 to 300 Yards Sport Weight Yarn and Pearl button.

Gauge:

6 Stitches and 4 Rows per 1 Inch, in ribbing. (unwashed/unblocked)

Notes:

  • This pattern has three parts: Crown, Body and Edge.
  • Crown worked in 12 rounds and includes most of the increase stitches.
  • Edge finished with 4 rounds of ribbing and 4 rounds of shells to give it the brim look.
  • 3-Ch at the beginning of each round, does not count as one stitch.
  • The Cephalopod Shell and pearl are optional and do not affect the hat pattern.
  • About one to two grams of yarn are needed to finish the Cephalopod shell.
  • Featured hats worked using Vanna’s Glamour yarn.
  • I did not wash or block my swatch for this hat because I believe it reduces elasticity and flattens the stitches. Also when blocking, one can stretch the stitches to any desired measurements and that will affect the fitting dramatically from one crocheter to another.

Cephalopod Shell Instruction:

  • Magic Loop to form a Ring.
  • Ch3, 8Dc in Ring , Do Not Join.
  • 2Hdc in each of the next 7 Sts Back Loop Only.
  • 2Dc in each of the next 7 Sts Back Loop Only.
  • 2Tc in each of the next 3 Sts Back Loop only.
  • Edging with back Sc St (Crab Stitch)
  • Stitch on Pearl and Shell

How To Avoid Mistakes:

  • Pay extra attention to first Fpdc. Make sure you work that stitch in the first Fpdc of the previous round. First Fpdc can be easily missed as it blends with the 3-ch stitch and the shell stitch of the round below.
  • Around the middle of each round go back and check all the shell stitches and make sure they’re the correct number of Dc. Sometimes one could easily slip into pilot crochet and work for example 3Dc stitch where there should be 4Dc stitch.

How To Customize The Size Of Your Hat:

To increase or decrease the Center to Edge length of your hat, do one of the following:

  • Work 2, 3 or 5 rounds of ribbing instead of 4. Every round in ribbing equals 1/4 inch in Center to Edge Length.
  • Omit one of the rounds where you work 6Dc shells. Each round in shells equals 1/2 inch in Center to Edge length.

To increase or decrease the circumference of your hat, do the following:

  • Increase or decrease the number of Dc in first round. Each added or omitted Dc stitch will change the circumference by one inch.

  1. How many stitches are each row supposed to end up with? Am I counting correctly for example, that in the XL size the first 4 rows would have 20, 40, 120, and 360 stitches each respectively?

    1. it’s better to sount the number of shells in each round instead of counting the number of stitches. Also you can check the number of stitches within each shell and make sure they’re the required number for that round. you’ll notice that the number of shells in each doesn’t change from the beginning to the end. the rounds circumference changes according to the number of stitches within each shell and not the number of repeats. I hope that helps.
