Cowabunga, dude! I love the turtles \(-_-\)  I wanted to create a design in honor of them being so rad. The mask can be worn on top of the head & it flips down to wear over your face!

This pattern is combination of by basic crochet beanie and my ninja mask designs.

Yarn: medium worsted weight; approx. 80 yds of color A (orange/red/blue/purple), approx. 100 yds of color B (green)

[Red Heart Super Saver]

Gauge: 10 sts & 7 rows = 4 inches

Final Measurements:

Circumference- 20 inches

Length- 7 inches

Materials:

Size H / US 8 (5.0 mm) crochet hook

Size I / US 9 (5.5 mm) crochet hook

Scissors & tapestry needle

Stitch marker

The pattern:

Make mask – [Size H / US 8 (5.0 mm) hook]

Beg w color A – slip knot & ch 20.

Sl st to 3rd ch from beg. This creates your first eyehole.

hdc in next 2 st.  This is your nose bridge.

Ch 17 & sl st to the other side of the last ch. This creates your second eyehole.

hdc in the next 2 st.

Approx. 30 dc in ch loop. hdc in next 2 st.

Approx. 30 dc in ch loop. sl st to join.

dc in ea dc st & hdc in ea hdc all the way around the mask. sl st to join.

Make straps – [Size I / US 9 (5.5 mm) crochet hook]

Find center on each side of mask & attach yarn. ch 1 to secure.

ch 35.

sc in 2nd ch from hook and all the way down.  sl st to join to mask. sl st in next st.

Turn your work & dc in ea st all the way down. 3 dc in the last st & work around to dc in ea st on opp side. sl st to join to mask.

Repeat steps on opposite side to make a second strap.

Make beanie – [ Size I / US 9 (5.5 mm) hook ]

Beg w color B – magic loop & ch 1 to secure

Round 1: 12 dc in ML & sl st to join

Round 2: 2 dc in ea st

Round 3: *2 dc in first st, 1 dc in next st*

Round 4: *2 dc in first st, 1 dc in next st, 1 dc in next st*

Round 5-11: dc in ea st

Attach mask to beanie –

Round 12: hdc in the next 8 stitches

in next 6 stitches slip stitch the sts of the strap closest to the face mask to the hat

hdc in the next 6 – 8 stitches (this depends on how big the eyeholes of your mask are) you want to crochet the space between the strap & the middle of the mask)

sl st the middle of the mask to the next st

hdc in the next 6 – 8 stitches (same amount as before – for the second eyehole)

sl st the other mask strap to your hat in the next 6 stitches

hdc until you reach the end of the round & sl st to join

Pattern Notes: This pattern can be adjusted to be used with any materials you have.  You can use any beanie pattern you prefer for this creation.  I use my seamless beanie pattern because it is quick & simple.  This hat fits standard adult size.

**UPDATE: Child’s Size!

I recently created a ninja turtle beanie for my nephew who is 5 yrs old.  I used the exact same pattern for this beanie except for I used a Size G/US 6 (4.0 mm) hook.
