Bobble stitch hand warmer crochet pattern

Can we talk about freezing offices for a second? Because I feel like, outside of scientists in Antarctica and the North Pole, my office might very well win the Coldest Office Ever competition.

The building’s about a 100 years old (maybe a bit older?), hopefully soon to be on the National Historic Register, terribly insulated, and generally extremely drafty.  My desk happens to be right next to a window, and my office furnace wants so badly to be a champ but ends up struggling more than it doesn’t.

All that to say…it’s freezing in my office. Always. All the time. Forever.

Enter hand warmers!

I crocheted these last week, because it’s rather difficult to get any work done when you’re sitting on your hands to keep them warm.

But they’re super easy, even for a beginner, so I thought I’d share!

Materials:
H (5mm) hook
Any worsted weight yarn — I used Loops & Threads Impeccable in Fresh Lilac, leftover from a baby blanket, ended up being about half a skein

Stitches used:
Single crochet (SC)
Half-double crochet (HDC)
Bobble stitch (bobble) — see note
Slip stitch (SL ST)

Notes:
The majority of this pattern uses what I call a bobble pair.  This is simply a bobble stitch + chain 2 + bobble stitch, all in the same stitch/space. It’s super simple, and works up really quickly once you get the hang of it.

Bobble pair

Bobble stitch:
So this is pretty easy, and there’s pictures! Start by wrapping your yarn around your hook. Then insert your hook into the next stitch (A), yarn over, and pull your hook through the stitch.  At this point, you should have 3 loops on your hook. (B)

And now you do the same thing!  Yarn over, insert hook into the same stitch, yarn over (C), and pull your hook through.  Now you have 5 loops on your hook. (D)

From here, you simply yarn over again and this time pull through the 5 loops on your hook. (E)

And that’s it!

Bobble pair step-by-step

Alright, pattern time!

Chain 33 to start (if you have super large or super small wrists, you can adjust this as needed, just add or subtract in multiples of 3)

*You can either join with a sl st to the first chain here, or you can be weird like me and do it after row 1.  Doesn’t matter either way, just make sure you don’t twist your chain if you do it here.  And if you join after row 1, make sure you weave in that bottom tail*

Row 1: Turn; chain 1; SC in the 2nd chain from hook; SC across (33 sc); join with SL ST to first SC, if not already joined

Row 2: Chain 1; HDC around (33 HDC); join with SL ST to first HDC

Row 3: Chain 2; bobble stitch + chain 2 + bobble stitch (bobble pair) in same chain as join; skip 2 stiches; repeat bobble pair, skip 2 stitches around (11 bobble pairs total); join with SL ST to top of chain 2

*It can get a little tricky, with such a small hook, to get both bobble into the HDC’s. Power through, my friends. It gets better. After this row, it works up like a dream!*

Rows 4-6: Chain 2; bobble pair in the first chain 2 space from previous row; bobble pair in 2 chain spaces around (11 bobble pairs); join with SL ST to top of chain 2

Row 7: Chain 2; bobble pair in the chain 2 spaces from previous row around until last bobble pair from previous row (so 10 bobble pairs); chain 5; join with SL ST to top of chain 2

Thumb hole chain 5

Row 8: Chain 2; bobble pair in the chain 2 space from previous row around (10 bobble pairs); at 5 chain, bobble pair in the middle chain (3rd) chain; join with SL ST to top of chain 2

Row 9-10: Chain 2; bobble pair in the chain 2 space from previous row, around (11 bobble pairs); join with SL ST to top of chain 2

Row 11: Chain 2; bobble pair in the chain 2 space from previous row 9 times; bobble in next chain 2; bobble in space joining bobble pairs from previous row; bobble in next chain 2; join with SL ST to top of chain 2

Single bobbles

Row 12: Chain 2; bobble pair in the chain 2 space from previous row 9 times; skip next single bobble; bobble pair in top of next single bobble; skip next single bobble; join with SL ST to top of chain 2 (10 bobble pairs)

Row 13-16: Chain 2; bobble pair in the chain 2 space from previous row, around (10 bobble pairs); join with SL ST to top of chain 2

*If you want really long or really short hand warmers, either add or subtract rows in this step*

Row 17: Chain 1; *HDC in top of next bobble, HDC in chain 2 space, HDC in top of next bobble; repeat from * around (30 HDC), join with SL ST to chain 1

Row 18: Chain 1; sc around; fasten off and weave in ends

And that’s it!
