Intrepid Knitting on the High Seas, or, Pointy Things and Tangly Stuff

A pair of handknit socks in thin stripes of blues, red, and yellow. 0

In Which the Pirate Has New Socks.

New socks, new socks! When KnitPicks had their big sale back in November I picked up some yarn, including this ball of Felicini in the “Bowling Alley” colourway. It’s the same base yarn as their Felici (but with narrower stripes) – which I’ve used before, and found to be slightly thinner than “standard” sock yarn. So I knit these socks at 68 stitches, rather...

The Water Rings shawl, alternating stripes of white and a multicolour yarn in teals, greens, and pops of pink.

In Which the Pirate Makes Water Rings.

When I saw the pattern for the Water Rings shawl I just knew I had to knit it – and I already had the perfect yarn for it, a single Zauberball that was a gift from friend Monica. I started knitting the shawl back in August, when Michael and I took a road trip to Connecticut for his birthday. It was an easy pattern,...

The Water Rings shawl in progress, displayed on a black leather couch. The two balls of yarn from which it's being knit are nearly used up.

In Which the Pirate Is Almost Done.

I started the Water Rings shawl back in August, and now it’s nearly done… The rows now have over 250 stitches each, so even though I only have a few more stripes to go, it isn’t going to be finished today. Or tomorrow. It would probably go quicker if I didn’t keep spreading it out to admire it. (The yarn is so pretty, though.)

In Which the Pirate Tallies Up 2023.

Happy happy new year! As usual, this tally is more for myself than anything else, but you may find it interesting as well. Once again, I succeeded in getting more yarn and fibre OUT than IN. Hooray! INCOMING YARN: 6,115 yards A cone of Holst Garn Supersoft in “Damask” so I can try knitting a sweater with just one yarn/just one gauge. Simplification. (3140)...

I am modeling the Baronial Hat, which is a handknit royal blue beanie with a six-pointed coronet in golden yellow yarn.

In Which the Pirate Knits a Coronet.

My friend Karl asked if I could knit a hat with an integrated coronet. After a video call to discuss his vision and manage expectations, he ordered the yarn to be delivered to my house – we settled on Wool of the Andes, from KnitPicks, mostly because it came in the right colours and partly because where else can you get wool yarn for...

A knit blanket in shades of teal and brown is draped over a black leather couch. There are two pillows on the couch as well - one has a black bicycle on a white background, and the other is knit in rainbow stripes.

In Which the Pirate Cranks Out a Blanket.

Sometimes you’re looking at leftover yarn in your stash thinking “man, that’d make a great lap blanket” exactly at the same time that you find out someone could really use a snoogly lap blanket. It’s so convenient when that happens! This is another 800+ grams of the same yarn I used to make Grandma’s wrap, Loops & Threads Impeccable Ombre in the “Tropical Storm”...

The textured leg of a purple sock, next to squiggly yarn that's just been ripped out of the heel flap, next to the ball of as-yet-unknit yarn.

In Which the Pirate Rips Back.

After much delay, procrastination, and avoidance, I’ve done the deed. I’ve ripped back the heel flap on the second Aviation Sock. Now I’m going to try to knit it again, but in such a way that the lines of the twisted stitches match up with the lines of the gusset decreases. Hopefully I get it right this time and don’t have to go through...

Two tubes of stockinette knitting, with a garter stitch cuff, that will eventually be the legs of pants. They are striped in 1970s shades of gold, tan, and brown, with a little bit of steel blue.

In Which the Pirate Has Legs.

I’m making good progress on the World’s Ugliest Most 1970s Pants! They’re past the calf increases and up to the knee, which means it’s time to start increasing for the upper leg – and almost wide enough to be able to swap to circular needles! Of course now that there are 100+ stitches per round, I expect visible progress to slow. But I’m still...

Pirate stands in front of a gallery wall of black cat pictures and paintings, wearing a close-fitting crewneck sweater striped in blue, green, and silvery gray.

In Which the Pirate Has a Stripy Sweater.

The sweater’s been finished for a bit, but I finally got pictures of it! It’s not perfect, but I’ve had store-bought sweaters that fit less well than this, so I’m pleased enough for my first try at a sock yarn sweater! The neck “treatment” is a sandwich of knitting picked up from a crochet chain. I haven’t seen this in many English knitting patterns;...

The beginnings of two pants legs, from the cuffs up. An inch of garter stitch cuff is followed by about six inches of striped stockinette in the round. The colours are browns, tans, and steel blue - some solid, some mock-jacquard. The overall effect is very 1970s. The stripes don't match from one leg to the other.

In Which the Pirate Casts On.

On Friday I had a knitting emergency: the realization that I didn’t have any good mindless traveling projects on the needles. The Aviation Socks require too much concentration, the Water Rings shawl is at the point where I have to weigh the remaining yarn and then change to the second stitch pattern, and the blanket I’m working on for donating to a refugee family...
