Square Motif Baby Blanket

Free Baby Blanket Crochet Pattern

This baby blanket is made up of square motifs. The motifs are connected after they are all crocheted. You can use the color scheme I chose or choose your own!

Materials:
Red Heart (affiliate link) Super Saver 100% acrylic yarn worsted weight, color Light Blue, 333 m (364 yds)/198 g - 1 skein.
Red Heart (affiliate link) Super Saver 100% acrylic yarn worsted weight, color White, 333 m (364 yds)/198 g - 1 skein.
Red Heart (affiliate link) Super Saver 100% acrylic yarn worsted weight, color Blue, 333 m (364 yds)/198 g - 1 skein.

Hook: E (3.50 mm) OR SIZE NEEDED TO OBTAIN GAUGE.

Gauge:Motif size =5.5" / 14 cm square.

Size:Square 44" / 112 cm.

Directions: Square Motif (make 36: 18 white, 10 light blue and 8 blue):
Crochet in rounds
Chain 6, join with a sl st to form a ring.
Rnd 1: ch 3, 15 dc.
Rnd 2: ch 3 and 2 dc in the same st, ch 2, *1 dc in the 2nd dc of the 1st round, ch 1, skip 1 dc, 3 dc in the dc of the prev. round, ch 2*, repeat from * to * 3 times, 1 dc, ch 2.
Rnd 3: ch 3, 5 dc in the 1st dc from the 2nd row, 1 dc in the 2nd dc, ch 2, * 1 dc, ch 2, 1 dc, 5 dc in the 2nd dc of the shell of 3 dc, 1 dc, ch 2*, repeat from * to * 3 times, 1 dc, ch 2.
Rnd 4: ch 3, 2 dc, 5 dc in the middle dc of the 5dc-shell from the 3rd row, 3 dc, ch 2, * 1 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, 5 dc in the middle dc of the 5dc-shell from the 3rd row, 3 dc, ch 2*, repeat from * to * 3 times, 1 dc, ch 2.
Rnd 5: ch 3, 4 dc, 5 dc in the middle dc of the 5dc-shell from the 4th row, * 15 dc, 5 dc in the middle dc of the 5dc-shell from the 4th row*, repeat from * to * 3 times, 15 dc.

Connect motives with the zig-zag join method: secure the thread to one motif, *ch3, 1sc into the last round of another motif, ch3, 1 sc into the last round of the 1st motif, repeat from *.

Border
Rows 1-4: dc.
Row 5: 1 dc, ch 1.
Row 6: 1 sc over the dc, ch 3
In the corners of the border crochet 5 dc in the dc from the previous row to make the border flat in the corners.

Thanks for this wonderful pattern that I am making as a shower gift for my niece. I might suggest, though, that some of the directions be expanded. I've been crocheting for 40 yrs, so I could figure out what you meant, but my 10 yr old granddaughter, who I am teaching to crochet, would be completely confused. For example, Rnd 5 ... instead of stating just "15 dc", it might be expanded to "dc in next 5 dc; 2dc in ch2 sp, dc in next dc; 2dc in ch2 sp; dc in next 5 dc". Novice crocheters like my granddaughter may find this easier to understand.
