Notes
This project is made in five separate triangles then seamed. A small little circle is joined in the middle.
It’s a pentagon, or five-sided polygon. It reminds me of a giant sand dollar so it would be very suitable for a nautical theme in a baby’s room. There are no hole-y bits since the staggered shells make a solid surface.
If the chain 3 at the beginning of any rows tends to be a bit loopy, try working chain 2 instead.
The instructions make a baby blanket. You can make a throw by simply continuing the three repeat rows of the triangle. You can make a tree skirt by leaving one edge unseamed and omitting the circle in the middle. You can make a shawl by making four triangles, continuing as long as desired.
Gauge
10 rows of triangle measures approximately 4″ high and 7″ across the 10th row.
Each triangle measures 18″ from point to last row and 24″ across last row.
Crochet Pattern Instructions
Row 1: Ch 2, sc in second ch from hook, turn.
Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as dc here and throughout), 4 dc in sc, turn.
Row 3: Ch 3, 3 dc in same dc, sk next dc, sc in next dc, sk next dc, 4 dc in last dc, turn.
Row 4: Ch 3, 1 dc in same dc, sc in next dc, 5 dc in next sc, sk next 2 dc, sc in next dc, 2 dc in last dc, turn.
Row 5: Ch 1, sc in same dc, 5 dc in next sc, sc in center of 5-dc group, 5 dc in next sc, sk next dc, sc in last dc, turn: 2 full 5-dc groups.
Row 6: Ch 3, 2 dc in same sc, sc in center of 5-dc group, 5 dc in next sc, sc in center of 5-dc group, 3 dc in last sc, turn: 1 full 5-dc group.

(Each repeat of row 14 increases the 5-dc groups by one group. On final repeat, 13 5-dc groups.)
Rows 15-38: Rep rows 12-14. Do not cut off after final row.
Work 62 sc along side, 3 at row 1 point and 62 sc along opposite side leaving row 38 open, fasten off.
Note: In retrospect, after seeing the finished photo, I would have really loved it if all the above row had been worked in close to the same color and the center circle in close to the same color. I don’t want to take it out now, but it would have been nice for those “spikes” to all be the same color, radiating from the center circle.
Center Circle
Round 1: Ch 2, 5 sc in second ch from hook, sl st to first sc.
Round 2: Ch 3, 2 dc in same sc as joining, 3 dc in each remaining sc, sl st to top of beg ch-3: 15 dc. Fasten off.
Seaming
With yarn needle, seam the side edges of the triangles to form a pentagon. Seam Circle at center of pentagon.
Finishing
Weave in ends carefully.
