Less than 1 oz baby or sport yarn OR soft worsted weight yarn.  (my grandbaby Elena --->)

Size H hook
Hat is about 5" - 5.5" tall. * PLEASE make sure newborn hats are at least 5" tall!

TOP- down:
Rnd 1: Ch 4, and join to form a ring. Ch 3, (counts as a dc) then make 16 more dc inside ring. Join with a slip stitch in top of 1st actual dc of previous rnd (not the ch 3). (17 dc)

Rnd 2: Ch 3, dc into the base of the Ch 3. * 1 dc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc,  Repeat from * around making sure to dc into the base of the ch 3. 
Join with a slip stitch in top of 1st dc of previous rnd. (26 dc)

Rnd 3: Repeat round 2.  (39 dc)

Rnds 4 - 10: Ch 3 and make a dc in the same stitch, then dc in each dc around including into base of ch 3 of the previous row, joining with a sl st in the top of the 1st dc of the round you just finished.  (This will add one stitch to each round so by the end of the 10th rnd you will have 46 dc).

RUFFLE
Rnd 11: Ch 3 and make 4 dcs in each dc around to form ruffle.  Join with a sl st to starting dc. End off and weave in ends.

Make a chain of 105.
Weave this in and out through the row before the ruffle row, starting through the center-right in the front.

TODDLER - 4 year old SIZE

(follow pattern above with the following changes)  12 dc into ring
Follow increase pattern for 4 rows, ending with 48 stitches.
Dc in each row for a total of 12 rows of dc.

7 dc in each stitch around, to create the ruffle.
