Color Coded Cowl – Free Crochet Pattern

Who doesn’t love colors that coordinate perfectly with each other? Last year, the Yarnspirations Pantone yarn was released, and I was mesmerized. Not only are the colors AMAZING, and the yarn super soft, the combinations were already done for me! So many possibilities.

So I decided to give it a go, and since I loved this combination of blues, I wanted to create something simple but that I could wear every day, using two sets of these color ways

Design

This cowl has a very simple construction, but you don’t need to crochet in the round. After a few tests, I decided it was better for the stripes to be horizontal, and for that it’s much easier to simply build a rectangle, then fold it in half and sew it together to form a tube. This tube twisted once and later sewn together.

Yarn

Like I mentioned before, I couldn’t wait to try this Caron X Pantone yarn. I used the colorway “Blueberry” but feel free to use any combination of colors you want!

These hanks of yarn come in little skeins that are separated to each other, and are pretty small (but look super cute, to be honest). You might want to quickly wing the yarn separately in each color before you start. It will make the change of colors easier and smoother.

Materials:

• 2 Skeins of Caron X Pantone in Blueberry or desired color combination.
• Crochet Hook US 10/J hook. (6 mm)
• Yarn needle

Abbreviations

Chain – ch

Double crochet – sc

Stitch(es) – st(s)

Gauge:

12 sc x 14 rows = 4″ (10 cm) 

Notes

Colors in skein are named from bottom to top, A to D.

Ch3 counts as first stitch

Instructions:

Attach color A from skein 1 to the same color in skein 2, and wind it so all of the yarn of the same color is together.

Do the same for the rest of the colors, you will have 4 winded balls of each color.

Ch 80 using Color A.

Mark with your finger last ch, ch3 more and dc into marked ch.

Dc in each of the chs, careful not to twist it.

Row 1: Ch 3, Dc in second stitch. Dc in every st.

Repeat Row 1 until you’ve ran out of Color A. It’s ok if you haven’t finished the row.

Attach Color B and continue dc in every st.

Repeat Row 1 with Color B until you’ve ran out of color, and proceed to use Color C.

Repeat Row 1 with Color C until you’ve ran out of color, and proceed to use Color D

Repeat Row 1 with Color D until you’ve ran out of color, and proceed to use Color E

Finish last row of color E leaving enough yarn of color D to sew the sides together (about 2 feet of yarn)

Lay your rectangle flat, with wrong side facing forward.

Fold the rectangle in half, with the wrong sides facing each other, to create a smaller rectangle. Sew it along the longest edge using the leftover yarn, this will create a tube

Twist the tube once

Keeping the twist, sew both ends of the tube together.

Weave in all ends.
