This fun and easy basket weave ear warmer crochet pattern makes a wonderful winter headband for your cold outdoor activities. It works up very quickly and can be made in any color or color group that you like!
The Basket Weave Ear Warmer
Hey All! The gorgeous sunshine we are getting here in North East PA on this winter day reminds me of what a great day it would be to go for a hike! I love to hike in the winter months… the trees have no leaves so you can see through the woods much farther than in the summer. Also in the winter I like to do something physical to warm myself up when its a bit cold out there…
When you are working hard outside and have a long head of hair like mine, it can get pretty hot underneath a hat very quickly. And even in the winter, you can sweat if you get too hot. A sweaty head under a hat usually leaves you feeling like “I want to take this off, but then my head will be cold”…
This basket weave ear warmer crochet pattern is exactly the solution to that problem. This headband style ear warmer is the perfect way to keep your ears warm and your head cool.
Foundation for the Basket Weave
The pattern belows starts out by using a foundation double crochet that is then joined to make a ring. This is a great way to start this type of pattern because it is easier than making a chain row to crochet back into. A chain row can be tighter than your other rows and leave your ear warmer feeling too tight at the starting row.

If you do not want to complete the foundation double crochets and would prefer to start with a chain row formed into a ring with double crochet stitches worked into the chain then you may of course start out that way too.
But I challenge you to step outside of your comfort zone and allow a new skill to worm its way into your stitch repertoire.
Basket Weave Ear Warmer Crochet Pattern
Pattern Details
Skill: Beginner/Easy
Size: One size fits most adults
19” headband circumference
Gauge: 5 rows x 5FPDC and 5 BPDC sts = 2 3/4 inches wide x 1 1/4 inches tall
Materials Needed:
- Worsted Weight (4) yarn. Approximately 100 yds. I used Red Heart Super Saver yarn for this pattern.
- H8/5 mm hook or size needed to obtain gauge.
- Tapestry or yarn needle.
Special Stitches:
Foundation Chain Double Crochet (FDC)
Front Post Double Crochet (FPDC): yarn over, insert hook from front to back to front around post of indicated stitch, yarn over, pull through post (you should have 3 loops on hook), yarn over and pull through first 2 loops on hook, yarn over and pull through the 2 remaining loops on the hook.
Back post Double Crochet (BPDC): yarn over, insert hook from back to front to back around the post of the indicated stitch, yarn over, pull through post (you should have 3 loops on hook), yarn over and pull through first 2 loops on hook, yarn over and pull through the remaining loops on the hook.
Pattern Notes:
- Rows 1 is the only row that is joined at the end of the row (forming the ring). All other rows are worked in the round. Use a stitch marker to track the beginning of the round and move it up as you go.
- At the beginning of row 2, you are instructed to ch 2. For the next round, ignore this chain 2.
- Numbers in parenthesis at the end of each row represent a stitch count.
- If you wish instead of the Foundation Chain Double Crochet, you may complete 70 chain stitches, form a ring, and then work a row of 1 DC in each Ch st around. Start with Row 2 in the pattern below if you choose to start this way
Basket Weave Ear Warmer Crochet Pattern
Row FDC 69. FDC Join. (70 FDC Total in form of ring.)
Row 2. Ch 2. *5 FPDC in next 5 st. 5 BPDC in next 5 st. Repeat from * around to end. (70 DC)
Row 3-Row 5. *5 FPDC in next 5 st. 5 BPDC in next 5 st. Repeat from * around to end. (70 DC)
Row 6. *5 BPDC in next 5 st. 5 FPDC in next 5 st. Repeat from * around to end. (70 DC).
Row 7.-Row 10. Repeat row 6.
At the end of row 10 join with a slip stitch to the first stitch of the round. Fasten off and weave in ends.

I just tried this pattern, and it didn’t look right, so I did it another way and found there is a printing mistake. It should be FPSC and BPSC instead of the FPDC and BPDC as printed in the pattern for it to come out as yours is pictured. Could be a typographical error or just a mistake when copied to the internet. Love the basketweave pattern. Thanks for sharing the pattern.
Gloria, Are you from the UK? I know the US stitch referred to as a double crochet (DC) is the same as the UK stitch referred to as a single crochet. I write my patterns in US terms, where the term double crochet would be appropriate. The US single crochet was not used to create this basket weave pattern. Wendy, Thank you so much for your comment, what a great question! I have tried the basket weave ponytail beanie hat in a multicolor yarn. I used a yarn where the colors changed rapidly and often, but I have to say I didn’t really love it. The basket weave texture gets the lost if the yarn is too busy. If the variegation in the yarn color is long (like it takes several feet of yarn before the color changes) then it would probably look great. It took me a minute to remember how to do the foundation row. Not many patterns use it. I finally got my memory bank sorted and it turned out beautifully in sparkle blue yarn. Sorry I can’t show you. Someone bought it hot off the hook. I’ve been crocheting and knitting for 52 years. Not ever giving it up. Even as a nurse I still found time to stitch up mittens. Love this site!
