Moose Lovey Blanket | Free Crochet Pattern

Forest animals are all the rage as nursery decor right now, why not give a moose as your next baby gift! A lovey blanket is a perfect baby shower or gender reveal gift.

I love moose!

They are adorable and majestic all at the same time. My favorite moose, Tahoma from Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, passed away this year, and now they have a new baby moose. I’m excited to watch him grow into the gorgeous animal Tahoma was.

The scoop of moose antlers is one of things that makes them stand out from other antlers in the cervine family. I wanted to make sure this sleepy moose had those big scooping antlers that define him as a moose.

Construction

The blanket it is a basic Granny Stitch blanket. I did a video tutorial for the continuous granny stitch blanket a while back. Forgive the oldness, but the pattern hasn’t changed. 🙂

The head is one piece, with the ears, arms and antlers sewn on. This pattern works up fast and the blankets are and easy and mindless, so you can use them as a “to go” pattern when you are out and about.

Moose Lovey Blanket

Easy.  Need to have knowledge of single crochet (sc), double crochet (dc), half double crochet (hdc), slip stitch (sl st), increase and decreases, and some experience with amigurumi part attachment.

Supplies

• Red Heart Super Saver yarn, 100% acrylic, worsted weight, 364 yds/7 oz/198 g, Café (CAF), < 1 ball; < 1 ball; Buff, (BUF), < 1 ball; Black (BLK), < 1 ball.
• Furls Odyssey G (4.00 mm) hook
• Polyfil stuffing
• Tapestry needle

Gauge

10 sts x 10 rows in sc = 2” x 2”

Measurements

5” wide x 3” tall, legs are 4” long

Pattern Notes

• Work in continuous rounds. Do not slip stitch unless otherwise specified by the pattern.
• For best results, assemble parts in order as directed.
• Weave in attachment ends at very end of project in case pieces require repositioning.
• Leave a long tail at beginning of blanket to use to attach lovey head. This will prevent attachments from showing on underside of blanket.
• Color changes for blanket are NOT written into pattern. Change colors as desired at end of rounds.

Blanket

With H hook, Leaving long tail (see Pattern Notes), ch 5, sl st in 5th ch from hook to form a ring.

Rnd 1: Ch 3, (2 dc, ch 3) in ring, (3 dc, ch 3) 3 times in ring, sl st in top of ch-3 to join, sl st 3 times to reach ch sp. (4 clusters)

Rnd 2: Ch 3, (2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in ch sp, ch 2, skip 3 [(3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in next ch sp, ch 2, skip 3] 3 times, sl st in top of ch-3 to join, sl st 3 times to reach ch sp. (8 clusters)

Rnd 3: Ch 3, (2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in ch-3 sp, ch 2, skip 3, 3 dc in next ch sp, ch 2, skip 3 [(3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in ch-3 sp, ch 2, skip 3, 3 dc in next ch sp, ch 2, skip 3] 3 times, sl st in top of ch-3 to join, sl st 3 times to reach ch sp. (12 clusters)

Rnd 4: Ch 3, (2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in ch-3 sp, ch 2, skip 3, [3 dc in next ch sp, ch 2, skip 3] to corner, *(3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in ch-3 sp, ch 2, skip 3, [3 dc in next ch sp, ch 2, skip 3] to corner, repeat from * on remaining sides, sl st in top of ch-3 to join, sl st 3 times to reach ch sp. (16 clusters)

Repeat Rnd 4, increasing by four clusters each round, until blanket measures 18” x 18” or 46 cm x 46 cm.

Solid Border

Sl st in first corner ch sp of blanket.

Rnd 1: Ch 3, (2 dc, ch-3, 3 dc] in ch-3 sp, [3 dc, 2 dc in ch sp] to corner, *(3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in ch-3 sp, [3 dc, 2 dc in ch sp] to corner, repeat from * on remaining sides, sl st in top of ch-3 to join.

Weave in any color changes and border ends. Leave long tail at center of blanket to attach lovey head.

With CAF, ch 2.

Rnd 1: Sc 6 in second ch from hook. (6)

Rnd 2: Inc in each st around. (12)

Rnd 3: [sc, inc] 6 times. (18)

Rnd 4: [2 sc, inc] 6 times. (24)

Rnd 5: [3 sc, inc] 6 times. (30)

Rnd 6-9: Sc evenly around. (30)

Rnd 10: [3 sc, dec] 6 times. (24)

Rnd 11: [2 sc, dec] 6 times. (18)

Rnd 12: Sc evenly around. (18)

Rnd 13: [2 sc, inc] 6 times. (24)

Rnd 14: [3 sc, inc] 6 times. (30)

Rnd 15: [4 sc, inc] 6 times. (36)

Rnd 16-20: Sc evenly around. (36)

Rnd 21: [4 sc, dec] 6 times. (30)

Begin stuffing.

Rnd 22: [3 sc, dec] 6 times. (24)

Rnd 23: [2 sc, dec] 6 times. (18)

Rnd 24: [sc, dec] 6 times. (12)

Finish stuffing.

Rnd 25: Dec 6 times. (6)

Cut yarn. Using needle, thread through front loops of remaining 6 st. Pull tight to close. Bind off, leaving long tail for sewing.

Nose

With CAF, ch 2, leaving long tail at beginning.

Row 1: Sc 3 in second ch from hook. Turn. (3)

Row 2: Ch 1, sc evenly across. Turn. (3)

Row 3: Ch 1, inc in first st, sc, inc in last st. Turn. (5)

Row 4: Ch 1, sc evenly across. Turn. (5)

Row 5: Ch 1, inc in first st, 3 sc, inc in last st. Turn. (7)

Row 6: Ch 1, sc evenly across. Turn. (7)

Row 7: Ch 1, inc in first st, 5 sc, inc in last st. Turn. (9)

Row 8: Ch 1, sc evenly across. Turn. (9)

Row 9: Ch 1, inc in first st, 7 sc, inc in last st. Turn. (11)

Row 10: Ch 1, sc evenly across. (11)

Bind off, leaving long tail for sewing. 

Using beginning tail, sew point of nose to center of small end of head. Lay triangle flat up head and use ending tail to sew flat along row 9.

Ears

(Make 2)

With CAF, ch 2, leaving long tail at beginning.

Row 1: 4 sc in second ch from hook.  Turn. (4)

Row 2: Ch 1, inc, 2 sc, inc. Turn. (6)

Row 3-6: Ch 1, sc evenly across. Turn. (6)

Row 7: Ch 1, dec, 2 sc, dec. Turn. (4)

Row 8: Ch 1, sc evenly across. Turn. (4)

Row 9: Ch 1, dec twice. Turn. (2)

Row 10: Ch 1, dec. (1)

Using beginning tail, sew to head low and directly across from each other.

Antlers

(Make 2)

Work holding two strands together.

With BUF, ch 2.

Rnd 1: 6 sc in second ch from hook. (6)

Rnd 2: Inc in each st around. (12)

Rnd 3: [sc, inc] 6 times. (18)

Rnd 4: 3 sc, ch 4, [sc in second ch from hook, hdc, dc] down ch, sc in same st as ch, [2 sc, ch 5 [sc in second ch from hook, sc, hdc, dc] down ch, sc in same st as ch] 4 times, 2 sc, ch 4, [sc in second ch from hook, hdc, dc] down ch, sc in same st as ch, 5 sc. Sl st to round edge. (24 sc, 6 horns)

Bind off leaving long tail for sewing.

Sew to head above ears, flat side of antlers to head, positioned so the horns curve up like bowl.

Eyes

Using BLK and needle, sew half circles on face in three stitches, evenly spaced over nose and between antlers.

Hooved Arms

(Make 2)

With BLK, ch 2. 

Rnd 1: 6 sc in second ch from hook. (6)

Rnd 2: Inc in each st around. (12)

Rnd 3: [Sc, inc] 6 times. (18)

Rnds 4-7: Sc evenly around.

Rnd 8: Change to CAF. Sc evenly around. 

Rnd 9: [4 sc, dec] 3 times. (15)

Rnds 10-14: Sc evenly around. 

Rnd 15: [3 sc, dec] 3 times. (12)

Rnds 16-20: Sc evenly around.

Bind off leaving long tail for sewing. 

Stuff. 

Press last round flat before attaching to blanket. 

Attach the arms to the blanket a few rounds from the center with the corners touching. This will hide the last round under the head of your lovey, but still independently attach it to the blanket. 

Weave in all attachment ends when parts are positioned as desired.

Use a long tail at the beginning (center) of blanket to attach head to blanket.
