May Day Flowers for Your Hair

My sister lives in London and works at a well-known fashion company, so she knows what she is talking about when it comes to fashion. Recently she told me that headbands were making a comeback – something I was glad to hear for I am forever pushing hair off my face. When I looked at the new style hairbands, I realized they were the perfect crochet summer project and a lovely way to use up all those cute little crochet flowers. And so the idea for the crochet May Day head band was born.

[Many thanks to my model, who is my beautiful sister.]

But don’t worry you don’t have to be dancing round a May Pole or a bridesmaid to wear one of these crochet flower headbands, they are on trend this summer (believe me, my trendy sister knows) and they are perfect to wear to festivals or even wedding. This step-by-step tutorial shows you an easy and quick way to add a little summer boho chic to your crochet projects.

Materials

2.5 mm pony crochet hook

Rico Creative Ricorumi cotton DK in three colours – I used Mint (41), Mauve (19) and Violet (18)

Bodkin

Sewing needle

Sewing thread

Elastic 6 mm wide

You can purchase yarn at lovecrochet and other trimmings at amazon. (Using these links does not cost you any extra but I will earn a small commission, will help me keep posting free patterns).

I purposefully used a hook that is smaller than usually recommended for the yarn in order to get nice tight blossoms.

Pattern notes and sizing

The pattern is written using UK terminology, for a conversion chart to US terminology click this link.

You will also need basic sewing skills to complete this pattern.

You will need to refer to my free crochet cherry blossom pattern to make the flowers for this hair band.

This headband will fit a medium to large woman’s head. If you need a smaller size, you can simply reduce the length of the headband base and make one or two less flowers. Alternatively, it is possible to hold the crochet hair band in place with grips.

Instructions

Headband base

Foundation: Using mint, chain 85. Your chain should be approx. 45 cm (18 inches) long. If you are using different yarns, you may need to add or deduct some chains.

1st row: Work 1 treble into the third chain from hook. Work trebles into each chain across and fasten off (83 treble).

Flowers

Use the free cherry blossom crochet pattern. When fastening off remember to leave one long tail on each flower that you can use to attach it to the headband.

Crochet 11 flowers in mint or the colour you have chosen for you headband base. These flowers are all the same colour, so you do not have to change colours between rounds.

Crochet 10 flowers in violet and mauve. I chose to do 5 blossoms with a dark centre and 5 blossoms with a light centre.

Making up

Using the long tails, sew the 11 mint flowers along the headband at even intervals.

Then position the mauve and violet blossoms between the mint flowers and sew in place.

Cut approx. 11 cm (4.5 inches) of the elastic and use the needle and sew the elastic into each end of the headband.

Congratulations, you have now finished your crochet May Day floral headband. I hope you enjoy wearing it throughout summer and the wedding/festival season
