I’m so excited to be on the Joy of Motion blog again! I’ve recently become completely obsessed with crochet color work, and have had so many ideas bouncing around my head to create new patterns using the tapestry crochet technique. If you’ve never done this technique before, I have a great tutorial on my site called The Beginner’s Guide to Tapestry Crochet. My most recent tapestry crochet pattern that I’ve created is the Sunset Beach Bag, which I get to share with you today!

The Yarn

For this design, I wanted to use a yarn that had a lot of body to it that would work with toting a lot of different things to the beach. Whenever I got to the beach, I love to bring books, snacks, water, and a few other things I try to fit in my bag. A worsted weight yarn wouldn’t do for it. Since I love to try to use things from my yarn stash, I found a perfect bulky weight yarn for this bag: Mary Maxim Titan yarn.

This yarn creates a sturdy fabric that can handle a lot of weight without having too much stretch. It also works up super quickly because it is a thicker yarn! You can always substitute it with any other bulky weight yarn if you have a favorite that you like to use.

SUMMER BAG INSPIRED BY THE BEACH

As I’ve been going through my designing journey, I’ve been looking for just the right technique that gets me excited to keep creating projects. Recently, I discovered how much I love doing color work with crochet, and have been trying to create as many designs as I can with it.

Growing up by the beach, I loved getting to see the beautiful California sunsets almost every night. A lot of my designs have taken inspiration from the ocean, and I knew that I wanted to create a fun beach bag design that would depict the sun over the water. The golden yarn perfectly captures the sun, and is contrasted by the light blue of the water. Now I want to take this beach bag on all sorts of adventures! Even if you don’t live by the beach, this bag would be so much fun to take on excursions to the park or even the lake.

How Long Does It Take To Crochet That?

How long it takes to crochet something varies depending on your skill & how fast you crochet. But that isn’t a helpful answer is it?

Well, I’ve developed a yarn calculator to help you get the answer to this question.

It will help you calculate exactly how much time you’ll spend crocheting a project.

All you need to know is how much yarn you will use on the project in either meters, yards or skeins. Then crochet your test square & time it.

Calculate how long it takes to crochet that.

Notes

  • This crochet pattern is written in US terms.
  • All measurements given are unblocked.
  • Note that measurements are given as exact as possible. But crochet tension & technique might give variations in the result, that changes from person to person.
  • Read pattern instructions carefully before beginning to make sure you understand everything. It might save you hours frogging your work & crocheting it again!
  • Make a swatch that measure at least 10 x 10 cm / 4 x 4 inches using the stitch the gauge is given for. If your swatch matches the gauge, you’re good to go. If the gauge is wrong, you might need to change your hook. Go up in crochet hook size if your stitches are smaller & go down in crochet hook size if your stitches are bigger. Learn more about testing gauge.
  • Check yarn info if you want to find an alternative or test your yarn against the gauge. Learn more about substituting yarn.
  • The stitch count of the rows stays the same the whole time: 36
  • This pattern is made using the tapestry crochet technique, which is a form of crochet color work where you carry the other color of yarn through you piece until you switch colors. If you’ve never done this technique before, I have a beginner’s guide to tapestry crochet on my site. It includes a step by step photo and video tutorial that walks you through all of the steps of tapestry crochet, which would help you make this pattern. For more information check out The Beginner’s Guide to Tapestry Crochet.

  • This pattern is made up of two panels that are sewn together.
  • The arrows at the beginning of the rows indicate what direction the row is worked on in the chart.
