A guest post for a great designer

This pattern was originally shared as a guest post for Rachel from Desert Blossom Crafts (I absolutely adore her blog). I have created the Sunburst Top especially for this occasion.

Simple construction to highlight a special stitch

This top is an easy oversize comfy summer top. It’s made out of 2 rectangles which are then sewed together. The cotton yarn and open lace stitch make it perfect for summer weather.

The main part of the Sunburst Top is made with Desert Blossom Crafts’ Sunburst stitch. It’s part of her amazing stitch along for 2019. Check out the complete stitch along here.

Different ways to wear this pattern for crochet top

I like to wear my Sunburst Top as it is with nude underwear over my favorite pair of jeans or shorts. One of my favorite parts of this design is the subtle see-through look of the lacy sunburst stitch combined with the oversized comfy fit. It makes me feel elegant and sexy while being super comfy and hiding my curves.

However, you can easily layer it with a tank top under it! It wouldn’t take anything away from this summer top crochet pattern free.

The yarn

The yarn I used is Lion Brand’s 24/7 Cotton yarn in the Ship Ahoy color palette: offwhite, orange, light blue and jeans.

I love working with this sturdy cotton yarn. The vibrant colors come out nicely and the details of the Sunburst stitch are greatly highlighted by this cotton yarn.

You’ll need 4 to 7 skeins of jeans color and 1 skein each of orange, off white and light blue. For a discount, grab one set of the Ship Ahoy color palette and add the quantity you need of jeans. Or make your own palette choosing from their 25 beautiful colors.

Materials

  • 4.5 mm hook
  • Lion brand 24/7 cotton yarn (100% cotton, 170 m /186 yd, 100g). 1 skein each of off-white, orange and light blue and 4 (4, 5, 6, 7) skeins of jeans color.
  • Tapestry needle to weave in the ends. I love this set as it has different eye sizes for different yarn thicknesses and it comes in a small tube which is very convenient so I don’t lose them.

Size

The summer top crochet pattern is available in following sizes: XS to 6XL. Sizes are written as XS/S (M/L, XL/2XL, 3XL/4XL, 5XL/6XL) throughout the pattern. Pictures illustrate the M/L size.

Below are the final top bust circumferences for the different sizes.

  • XS/S: 104 cm / 41”
  • M/L: 124 cm / 48.75”
  • XL/2XL: 146 cm / 57.5”
  • 3XL/4XL: 167 cm / 65.75”
  • 5XL/6XL: 188 cm / 74”

Final front top length is 70 cm / 27.5”

The top is designed with a lot of ease: 20 to 30 cm / 8” to 12”.

Gauge

The gauge for this pattern, in alternating rows of dc, is 17 st by 11 rows for a 10 cm by 10 cm square (4” by 4”).

Abbreviations

This pattern uses US notations.

  • st = stitch
  • ch = chain
  • sc = single crochet
  • hdc = half double crochet
  • dc = double crochet

Notes

Work instructions between [] the indicated number of times or until the end of the row / round.

The final number of stitches is indicated at the end of the row / round between < >.

The turning ch 1, ch 2 don’t count as stitches throughout the pattern except if mentioned otherwise.

When changing colors I cut the yarn of after each section.

The pattern is written in crochet shorthand.  For example:

  • “sc 1” means to single crochet in the next stitch,
  • “sc 2” means to single crochet in each of the next 2 stitches,
  • and “2 sc” means to single crochet twice in the next st.

Special Stitches

The main part of the Sunburst Top is made with Rachel from Desert Blossom Craft (I absolutely adore her blog!) Sunburst stitch.

Back Panel of the Summer Top Crochet Pattern

The only difference between both panels is that the back panel is a bit longer than the front panel.

Using white yarn, Ch 88 (106, 124, 142, 160) + 1.

Repeat Rows 1 to 73.

Add 2 more repetitions of Rows 10 to 13 (18 times total).

Continue with Row 74 to end.

Blocking

Block both rectangles to final measurements. Stretch them vertically to open up the beautiful sunburst stitches.

Don’t skip this step as it can make a huge difference. Read my detailed tutorial on why block, how-to, and all my tips and tricks if you need help.

Final measurements: panel width 52 (62, 73, 83.5, 94) cm / 20.5 (24.5, 28.75, 32.75, 37)”.

Final front top panel length is 70 cm / 27.5”

Sewing your Summer Top

Start by sewing the shoulder seams. The right side of the panels are the sides on which you started the Sunburst stitch (Row 9).

Leave a 30 cm / 11.75” opening for your head in the center of the panels.

Measure down from the shoulder seam the opening for the arms: 20 cm / 7.75”. From there on, sew the sides. The bottom colored dc parts are left unsewn (cfr picture below).

Now you’re top is ready to go look fabulous in the summer sun!
