Summer and warm weather is upon us, which means it’s time to make some cute crochet summer tops! I’m excited to be back on the Joy of Motion blog and get to share my new favorite summer top design: the Ocean Waves Halter Top. This simple and beginner friendly crochet top is made from lightweight cotton, so that it is lovely to wear during the hot summer months. Even if you’ve never made a crochet garment before, you can make this since it is worked flat and there are barely any seams! It’s a fun top you’ll want to all summer long.

The Yarn
For this halter top pattern, I used Lion Brand Yarn – Comfy Cotton Blend .
This cotton polyester blend is super popular in the crochet world right now because of how awesome it works up for garments. Not only does it have amazing drape, but it also is super soft.
It comes in some super fun variegated yarn colors such as the blue combo that I used, or even a solid white. If you don’t have access to that yarn, I definitely recommend using a cotton weight 3 yarn, because that way you can wear this during the hot days of the summer!
A FLATTERING AND FUN HALTER TOP
I live in the Central Valley of California where it gets super super hot, so one thing I want to make sure that I have is light and airy tops to wear. Recently I discovered how fun creating lace patterns are, and I found that I love the combination of shell stitches and horizontal puff stitches. This creates a beautiful lace pattern that gives this top lots of breathability.
This top is super fun to wear with jeans or shorts during the summer or spring! The lace pattern gives it a flittery look that adds a splash of fun to you wardrobe. The back of the top has criss cross straps that create an open back. It’s also sized from sizes XS-3X so that all types of body shapes can wear it! I’m all about inclusive sizing, because I totally believe that any body type can look fabulous in handmade clothes!

How Long Does It Take To Crochet That?
How long it takes to crochet something varies depending on your skill & how fast you crochet. But that isn’t a helpful answer is it?
Well, I’ve developed a yarn calculator to help you get the answer to this question.
It will help you calculate exactly how much time you’ll spend crocheting a project.
All you need to know is how much yarn you will use on the project in either meters, yards or skeins. Then crochet your test square & time it.
Calculate how long it takes to crochet that.
