The Modern Granny Square Cowl features large and small granny squares joined together to make a button front cowl. This cowl keeps your neck and front warm, making it perfect to pair with v-neck coats. Use the colors listed to hearken to spring, or change up the colors for your own style. If you want to make this smaller, then just use the worsted weight Berroco Vintage yarn and a coordinating hook.

Modern Granny Square Cowl Pattern:
Small Square (make 4)
Rnd 1: With Color B, ch 4, join with a sl st to form a ring, ch 5 (counts as first dc and ch 2 here and throughout), (3 dc, ch 2) 3 times in ring, 2 dc in ring, sl st to 3rd ch of beginning ch 5. – {3 dc on each side, ch-2 on each corner}
Rnd 2: With Color C, sl st into ch-2 corner sp, ch 5, 3 dc in same ch-2 corner sp, [ch 1, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next ch-2 corner sp] 3 times, ch 1, 2 dc in next ch-2 corner sp, sl st to 3rd ch of beginning ch 5. – {2 sets of 3 dc on each side, ch-2 on each corner}
Rnd 3: With Color A, sl st into ch-2 corner sp, ch 5, 3 dc in same ch-2 corner sp, [ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next ch-2 corner sp] 3 times, ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, 2 dc in next ch-2 corner sp, sl st to 3rd ch of beginning ch 5. – {3 sets of 3 dc on each side, ch-2 on each corner}
Rnd 4: Sl st into ch-2 corner sp, ch 5, 3 dc in same ch-2 corner sp, [(ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp) 2 times, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next ch-2 corner sp] 3 times, (ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp) 2 times, ch 1, 2 dc in next ch-2 corner sp, sl st to 3rd ch of beginning ch 5. – {4 sets of 3 dc on each side, ch-2 on each corner}

Rnds 1-4: Work the same as for small square in same colors.

Fasten off and weave in ends
Seaming
Seam pieces of granny square cowl together as shown in schematic.
Border
Rnd 1: Join Color C to any ch-2 corner, ch 3, 2 sc in same ch-2 corner, [sc in each st to next ch-2 corner, (2 sc, ch 2, 2 sc) in ch-2 corner] 3 times, sc in each st to first ch-2 corner, 2 sc in ch-2 corner, sl st to 2nd ch of beginning ch-3.
Fasten off.
Rnd 2: Join Color B to any ch-2 corner, ch 3, sc in same ch-2 corner, [sc in each st to next ch-2 corner, (sc, ch 2, sc) in ch-2 corner] 3 times, sc in each st to first ch-2 corner, sc in ch-2 corner, sl st to 2nd ch of beginning ch-3.
Fasten off.
Finishing
Add 3 buttons to granny square cowl as shown in schematic. Weave in all ends.
