A few weeks ago I saw a beautiful quilt featuring gnomes on Pinterest. I knew right away I wanted to crochet one of those cute little guys, but was waiting for more inspiration to strike. And then the idea came to me. Why not crochet a gnome wall hanging?
I was able to work the entire thing up in a day using leftover yarn I had on hand. Any worsted weight yarn will work, but I used Caron Simply Soft yarn on this project. It is one of my go-to yarns, so I always have a lot of it!
I thought it would be cute for this gnome to be framed in lattice. If you have not done the lattice stitch, do not worry! This pattern only uses single crochet and front post treble crochet (except for 1 row of half double crochet at the border). The pattern may seem complicated at first glance, but that is only because I have written out every little detail for you! Within a few rows, you will see the pattern emerge.
The color work on the gnome is achieved by using the intarsia crochet technique, where you drop your working yarn for the new yarn color needed, then pick the dropped color back up when needed on the next row. I also made bobbins, which I will explain further in the note section below.

Gnome Wall Hanging
Materials Used:
Size J/10 – 6.00 mm crochet hook
Partial skeins of worsted weight yarn as follows:
- A (background) – Caron Simply Soft – Off White
- B (feet and hat) – Caron Simply Soft – Pumpkin
- C (body) – Caron Simply Soft – Soft Pink
- D (beard) – Caron Simply Soft – White
- E (nose and border) – Caron Simply Soft – Bone
1 wooden dowel rod, 12″ long, 1/4″ diameter
Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
Glue or hot glue (optional)

Yarn over hook two times. Insert hook behind post of indicated stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through 2 loops (3 loops on hook), yarn over and pull through 2 loops (2 loops on hook), yarn over and pull through remaining 2 loops on hook.
Gauge:
4″ x 4″ = 13 sc, 16 rows
Finished Size Approximately:
16″ long, 10″ wide
Note:
When changing colors, drop the old color (do not fasten off) and pick up new color. You can either run the dropped color along the back side of the work (where it will not be seen), or you can use bobbins.
I made 2 bobbins to work the background on each side of the gnome, 2 bobbins to work the body on each side of the beard, and 2 bobbins to work the hat on each side of the beard.
You can use a fancy bobbin holder if you like, but I simply separate out a suitable length of yarn from the original skein and wrap it up into a little ball like this.

On this row, you will be crocheting around your dowel rod. Ch 1, insert hook into 1st st, pull up a loop around the dowel rod, yarn over and pull through.
*Insert hook into next st, pull up a loop around the dowel rod, yarn over and pull through; repeat from * across.
Loop yarn around the dowel rod from back to front to secure the end, then ch 50 and slip st to beginning ch on right side of work. Loop yarn around the dowel rod again to secure the end and tie off in the back. Fasten off.
You may wish to add a dab of glue or hot glue to hold each end of this row to the dowel rod, so that the dowel rod does not slip out.
To add the picot border at the bottom of the wall hanging:
With wrong side facing, attach E to row 1, ch 1 and hdc in same st and in each st across, turn. Ch 1 and sc in 1st st, ch 3, sl st into the 1st ch, *skip a st, sc in next st, ch 3, sl st into the 1st ch; repeat from * across to last 3 sts, skip 2 sts and sc in last st. Fasten off and weave in all ends.
