The Yarn for the Crochet Tote Bag

To make this crochet tote bag you’re going to need 100 % cotton yarn. A sturdy and durable yarn that can endure the weight of whatever you carry around in it.

The yarn weight used is aran or 4 medium yarn.

If you don’t have a similar yarn at hand, grab Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton for a similar result.

You can also change to a different yarn fiber, like acrylic yarn, which will look great for an all year crochet bag.

How Long Does It Take To Crochet That?

How long it takes to crochet something varies depending on your skill & how fast you crochet. But that isn’t a helpful answer is it?

Well, I’ve developed a yarn calculator to help you get the answer to this question.

It will help you calculate exactly how much time you’ll spend crocheting a project.

All you need to know is how much yarn you will use on the project in either meters, yards or skeins. Then crochet your test square & time it.

Calculate how long it takes to crochet that.

Crochet Tote Bag – Pattern Notes

  • This crochet pattern is written in US terms.
  • All measurements given are unblocked.
  • Note that measurements are given as exact as possible. But crochet tension & technique might give variations in the result, that changes from person to person.
  • Read pattern instructions carefully before beginning to make sure you understand everything. It might save you hours frogging your work & crocheting it again!
  • Make a swatch that measure at least 10 x 10 cm / 4 x 4 inches using the stitch the gauge is given for. If your swatch matches the gauge, you’re good to go. If the gauge is wrong, you might need to change your hook. Go up in crochet hook size if your stitches are smaller & go down in crochet hook size if your stitches are bigger. Learn more about testing gauge.
  • Check yarn info if you want to find an alternative or test your yarn against the gauge. Learn more about substituting yarn.
  • This pattern is written for 1 size, however size adjustments are suggested under the heading “Size Measurements”.
  • At the end of each row, the stitch count is given in parenthesis. It includes starting chains.
  • All rows are worked into the previous row.
  • Rows with hdc only (row 1-6 + row 43-48) may end up wider than the rows with stripes for some crocheters. To adjust: Either go down a crochet hook size for hdc rows or up a crochet hook size for the stripe rows if you have this experience. Blocking the final bag will also work as a great option.
  • Use stitch markers to mark of the beginning/end of each row, to make it easier to find the first & last st on each row

Size & Measurements

  • Width: 38 cm / 14.9 inches*.
  • Height: 42 cm / 16.5 inches*.
  • Handle: 65 cm / 25.6.

*Measured with the bag laying on a flat surface.

Size Notes

  • The written pattern is for just one size.

Size Adjustments

  • Make the bag wider by adding extra stitches before you start row 1.
  • Make the bag narrower by reducing the number of stitches you make before you start row 1.
  • Make the bag deeper or shallower by adding or reducing the number of rows you crochet.
  • Make the handles shorter or longer by adding or reducing the number of rows you crochet.

Note: Any size adjustments affects yarn usage & you might need more/less yarn than suggested.

Stitches You Will Need

You will need to use the chain, slip stitch, half double crochet stitch, double crochet stitch & foundation single crochet stitch.

Foundation Single Crochet (FSC)

Written description:

Step 1: Ch 2 st.

Step 2: Insert hook into 2nd ch from hook, pull up a loop. Yo and pull through first loop (making “chain”). Yo and pull through both loops on hook.

Step 3: Insert hook into prev “chain” you made (It should look like you go through a resemblance of a “normal” st, with 2 strands of yarn), pull up a loop, yo and pull through first loop (making “chain”). Yo and pull through both loops on hook. Repeat step 3 until you’ve made enough stitches.

*2nd ch in step 1 makes 1 st, step 2 makes 1 st & every time step 3 is repeated you make 1 st.

Techniques You Will Need

You will need to know how to change colors in crochet with different color on different rows.

Changing Color With Different Color On Different Rows

When working with different colors on different rows, you’ll never finish the last stitch on the last row with one color, with the color you where working with.

Do all the steps of the stitch, then leave the last step unworked. Yarn over with the color for the next st & pull yarn through.

Repeat this for every row you change colors to make the color changes look beautiful.
