Who doesn’t need a Heart Stitch Marker in their life? I know I do! It was so fun making my own stitch markers. I got to try the pattern out in different colors and I can’t wait to use them on all of my crochet projects!

The Heart Stitch Marker is crocheted using size 10 crochet thread. You can use any brand that you prefer. I had a bunch of different colors left over from my Christmas ornament series I made a few years ago and thought this would be a great project to use some of that up.

Well, it turns out that each heart only uses roughly 33 yards, so I didn’t use much of what I had! Ha! Oh well. I’ll just have to make something else with it.

Please keep in mind that if you use any thread or yarn that is heavier than the size 10 crochet thread, your heart will be larger than the sample shown here. You can certainly make larger ones. It’s really your preference. I know that some people don’t like using thread.

I can tell you that my hook that I used was a life saver with this Heart Stitch Marker project! I bought these Boye Ergonomic Crochet Hooks — a giant set — and they have been wonderful on my hands! The squishy rubber handle on the B (2.25 mm) crochet hook required for this project kept my hands and fingers from hurting at all while I worked. I don’t think I’ll ever go back to using regular skinny metal hooks again. If you’d like to see the hooks I use daily, click this link. Some other materials you will need for the project include jump rings and lobster clasps. You might even need a small pair of pliers to open and close the jump ring, which is essentially a tiny metal ring that attaches the lobster clasp to your Heart Stitch Marker. These will also work for knitting stitch markers if you change the lobster clasp to a larger ring!

And last but not least, one of my favorite things about these stitch markers is that you can embroider the letter of the hook you used for a particular project so you will never forget again! Are you one of those multi-project crocheters? I know I am. I will put down a project and then forget what size hook I was using when I go to pick it back up again. It’s very frustrating! But now I will never forget!

Heart Stitch Marker

Materials Used:

• Aunt Lydia’s Crochet Thread Size 10 – Navy – 350 yds/320 m
• Aunt Lydia’s Crochet Thread Size 10 – Mint Green – 350 yds/320 m
• Aunt Lydia’s Crochet Thread Size 10 – Orchid Pink – 350 yds/320 m
• Aunt Lydia’s Crochet Thread Size 10 – Black – 350 yds/320 m
• Artiste Crochet Thread Size 10 – Porcelain – 400 yds
• Or any size 10 Crochet Thread
• B (2.25 mm) Crochet Hook — my favorite hooks! I use them daily!
• 6 mm Jump Rings
• Lobster Clasps (6×9 mm)
• Tapestry Needle

Finished Size Approximately:

1” width x ¾” height

Abbreviations:

FC – foundation chain

ch(s) – chain(s)

st(s) – stitch(es)

hdc – half double crochet

dc – double crochet

sl st – slip stitch

Notes:

• Please note that if you use any thread or yarn thicker than the size 10 recommended for this pattern, you finished heart will be much larger than the sample.
• The embroidered lettering is optional.
• The number of Jump Rings and Lobster Clasps that you will need depends on how many stitch markers you will make. Each stitch marker uses one Jump Ring and one Lobster Clasp.
• Each heart requires approximately 33 yards of thread.

Instructions:

Make 2

FC: Ch 4, sl st in 1^st ch to form a loop. (Or you can use the magic circle)

Round 1: Ch 3, 4 dc in loop, 4 hdc in loop, ch 2, 4 hdc in loop, 4 dc in loop, ch 3, sl st in loop.

Finish off. Pull final tail tight and tie to original tail from FC. Trim ends short.

Embroidering

If hand stitching letters on your hearts, do that now. If not, skip this step.

Using a tapestry needle and thread, stitch the letter to the Right Side of your heart. Tie the two tails together on the Wrong Side and trim the ends short.

Note: It is up to you if you would prefer to embroider on one heart panel or both.

Finishing

Place two hearts together with Wrong Sides facing each other. Using a tapestry needle and about 6” of thread, stitch the two hearts together, working evenly around the perimeter.

Note: I found that lining up the stitches around the perimeter and working the needle through each corresponding stitch gave a straighter final product. See photos below.

Once you are finished stitching the two heart panels together, tie the two ends together. Insert the two ends into the eye of the tapestry needle and insert the needle between the two heart panels until it comes out the other side. Pull the needle the entire way through and then release the ends. Snip the ends flush with the edge of the heart.

Attach a jump ring to your lobster clasp and to your heart as shown in the photos below. Using needle nose pliers or similar tool, pinch the two ends of the jump ring closed to keep your clasp and heart inside the ring.
