Fall is right around the corner and I know you’re looking forward to the colder weather just as much as I am! I love making lacy openwork garments and accessories in the summer, but the thought of fall/winter weather crochet always makes me especially excited.
That’s why I’m so happy to present my newest design on joyofmotioncrochet.com which is such a wonderful platform to show off my color-block T- top.If you’re looking for a new project for fall, you can’t go wrong with a quick and simple design the the color-block T-top which is made of mostly hdc stitches and requires very little seaming.
This pattern uses Lion Brands jeans yarn, a soft, squishy affordable acrylic that works great for garments and is available in a beautiful selection of trendy and classic colors.
This design starts with creating the wide ribbed bottom border with back loop only single crochet stitches. This band is stretchy and hugs the body, creating a beautiful shape to the top. The rest of the top is simply added on to the bottom band.
The sleeves are worked as extensions of the upper body and are worked in easy hdc rows back and forth. Add the pretty borders at the sleeves and your T-top is done! If you have a few crocheted garments under your belt or are a confident beginner, you can tackle this T-top!

The Yarn
This pattern uses Lion Brands jeans yarn, a soft, squishy affordable acrylic that works great for garments and is available in a beautiful selection of trendy and classic colors. I used my all time favorite yarn once again for this project, Lion Brands Jeans yarn.
Jeans yarn and garments are a perfect fit for one another and I always recommend this yarn for cardigans, pullovers and tunics. It’s really my go to choice when I’m planning fall or winter projects. Jeans yarn is my favorite acrylic because it’s very soft and smooth, it’s not stiff as some acrylics tend to be, and it has a nice springy quality which mimics merino wool.
There are many color choices in jeans yarn and they all coordinate beautifully with one another. You’ll have so much fun choosing your color palette!
THE COLOR BLOCK T-TOP (a fast and fun crochet project that you’ll love to wear all year long!)
I was going to call this the fall color block-top because the colors remind me of cool weather and autumn leaves. But its really not just for fall, because you can make it work all year long! Crochet this top in brighter colors, pink and teal, for a great spring time pullover. I love the gray and charcoal shades which can be worn with a long sleeved shirt underneath for a cozy and stylish winter top. So many possibilities!

About The Pattern
This is a great pattern that has lovely shaping at the waist and room in the bust. Even though the waist shaping looks elegant its very simple to achieve and requires no increasing or decreasing of stitches. Pattern is written in sizes S (M, L, XL). Keep in mind, this pattern has no complex stitch patterns so it’s quite easy to adjust for a perfect fit. Don’t have a lot of garment experience? This is a great beginner-friendly pattern to get you started!

13 hdc sts x 10 rows per 10 cm/4 “

Notes
- Model is 5’ 3” tall with a 34 inch bust shown in photo wearing size S.
- A small portion of the lower body is worked in turned rounds. To join rounds, sl st to top of turning chain (first st) of the working round.
- Pay attention to instructions as some rounds are turned and others are not.
- The upper front and back panels are worked directly onto the last round of the lower body in two separate sections which are then seamed together at sleeves and shoulders.
- Change color by picking up strand of new color and it pulling through both loops of the last yarn over of the previous color.
- This crochet pattern is written in US terms.
- All measurements given are unblocked.
- Note that measurements are given as exact as possible. But crochet tension & technique might give variations in the result, that changes from person to person.
- Read pattern instructions carefully before beginning to make sure you understand everything. It might save you hours frogging your work & crocheting it again!
- Make a swatch that measure at least 10 x 10 cm / 4 x 4 inches using the stitch the gauge is given for. If your swatch matches the gauge, you’re good to go. If the gauge is wrong, you might need to change your hook. Go up in crochet hook size if your stitches are smaller & go down in crochet hook size if your stitches are bigger. BOTTOM RIBBING
All sizes, with smaller hook and color “Brand New,” Ch 35.
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across. [34 sc]
Row 2: Ch 1, turn, scBLO in each sc across. [34 scBLO]
Repeat row 2 until ribbing measures 27 (30, 34, 38) inches, or approx 118 (130, 144, 156) total rows
Do not fasten off.
Seam last row of ribbing to first row of ribbing using a slip stitch seam, turn panel so seam is on the inside. Do not fasten off.
With right sided facing, turn to work in ends of ribbing rows.
Note: When working sc base round, aim to work approximately 1 sc st per row end, ending with the below round count.
Sc base round: Ch 1, evenly space 118 (130, 144, 156) sc sts around, sl st to join. [118 (130, 144, 156) sc]
Fasten off.
LOWER BODY (WORKED IN TURNED ROUNDS)
With larger hook join color “chambray blue” with a sl st to last sc of the sc base round.
Round 1: Ch 2 (counts as hdc here and throughout), turn, hdc in each st around, sl st to join. [118 (130, 144, 156) hdc]
Rounds 2- (9, 10, 10, 11): Repeat round one 8 (9, 9, 10) times.
Fasten off.
FRONT PANEL/ADD SLEEVES
Note- the seam should be at the side edge of the top so that is is hidden under the arm.
Lay panel flat, folded at the seam so that the seam is on the side edge of the top. Place a stitch marker at the seam to mark where the sleeve will be added. Count 57 (63, 70, 76) sts to the left of the first marked st, place stitch marker in next st to designate the second sleeve.
Note- you should have 59 (65, 72, 78) sts outside of the marked sts remaining to work the back panel. Count these stitches to be sure your back panel and front panels will line up evenly to seam.
FIRST SLEEVE FOUNDATION ROW
With color “topstitch,” ch 20, join the chain to the first marked st with a sl st.
Fasten off.
SECOND SLEEVE FOUNDATION ROW
With a new strand of yarn, sl st to second marked st, ch 21, hdc in 3rd ch from hook and each ch across, hdc in marked st, hdc in remaining 57 (63, 70, 76) sts, hdc in next marked st, hdc in each ch of first sleeve foundation chain. [99 (105, 112, 118) hdc]
Row 1: Ch 2, turn, hdc in each st across. [99 (105, 112, 118) hdc]
Rows 2-18 (18, 20, 22): Repeat row one 17 (17, 19, 21) times. Do not fasten off.
SHAPE RIGHT SHOULDER
Row 1: Ch 2, turn, hdc in each of next 39 (42, 45, 47) hdc, leaving remaining 59 (62, 66, 70) sts unworked for neck and left shoulder. [40 (43, 46, 48) hdc]
Rows 2-3: Ch 3, turn, hdc in each st across. [40 (43, 46, 48) hdc]
Fasten off.
SHAPE LEFT SHOULDER
With right side facing, skip next 19 (19, 20, 22) sts to the left of the last st made of Row 1 of right shoulder, join a new strand of yarn with a sl st.
Row 1: Ch 2, hdc in each st across. [40 (43, 46, 48) hdc]
Rows 2-3: Ch 2, turn, hdc in each st across. [40 (43, 46, 48) hdc]
Fasten off.
Back PANEL
Flip your work so that the panel you just worked is to the back. Work back panel exactly as front, including shoulder shaping.
Note- the first sleeve foundation row and the second sleeve foundation row should begin in the first unworked sts on either side of the already worked panel so that the two panels can be seamed at the sleeve to join when completed.
JOINING PIECES
With wrong sides facing out, seam front panel sleeve to back panel sleeve using the mattress stitch. Begin at the join and end at the outer sleeve edge. Repeat on other side.
Seam both shoulders.
FINISHING/ DO NOT TURN ROUNDS
With right side facing, join a new strand of yarn in color “topstitch” to left shoulder seam.
Round 1: Ch 1, sc evenly around neck opening, sl st to join.
Round 2: Change to color “chambray blue,” sc in each sc around, sl st to join.
Fasten off.
SLEEVE BORDER
With right side facing, join a new strand of yarn in color “topstitch” at sleeve seam.
Round 1: Ch 1, working in multiples of 2, work sc sts evenly around sleeve opening, sl st to join.
Round 2: Change to color “chambray blue,” sc in each sc around, sl st to join.
Round 3: Ch 4 (counts as 1 dc and 1 ch-1), sk next st, *dc in next st, ch 1, sk next st; repeat from * around, sl st to join.
Round 4: Ch 2 (does not count as a st), puff st in next ch-1 space, *ch 1, sk next dc, [puff st in next ch-1 space; repeat from * around, sl st to beg ch-2 to join.
Round 5: Ch 1, sc in same sp, sc in top of next puff, ch 3, sl st in same sc just worked, *sc in next ch-1 space, sc in top of next puff, ch 3, sl st in same sc just worked; repeat from * around, sl st to beginning sc.
Fasten off. Repeat on other sleeve.
