Livenza – the crystal clear, spring fed river rippling through Polcenigo, Italy. The quiet murmer of waters whisper of by-gone days when the palace on the hill bustled, of its slow decline into historic ruins, of horse drawn carriages exchanged for gasoline powered vehicles.
Livenza – the delicate braid stitch featured on this designs ripples across the scarf as that sparkling river ripples through history. Comprised mainly of simply stitches (hdc and tr), this pattern is all about that rippling texture created by the braids. It works up quickly and easily – a peaceful project for the intermediate crocheter. As peaceful as a slow-moving river!

The Yarn
I chose a super soft Dk/3 weight yarn in a delicious colorway – the Yarn Bee Luxe Lollies! However, since this yarn has been discontinued (I’m not crying, you’re crying), I also suggest using a similar Dk/3 weight yarn – one that is a little closer to a Worsted or Aran/4 weight. I believe this pattern would be stunning in a Lion Brand Mandala (DK/3), Caron Simply Soft (a light 4 weight), Lion Brand Ferris Wheel, or even Yarn Bee Dee-lish Boutique.
I chose a self striping yarn that did all the colorwork for me, but feel free to mix it up and add different colors or work the entire pattern in a solid – I feel like it would be stunning in tweed!
THE FASHION POTENTIAL
The Livenza Scarf works up as a cozy cowl/triangle scarf combo – the perfect pattern to work up this fall that will carry you through the winter. The subtle rippling texture makes a minimalist fashion statement that is sure to be popular at markets or as a gift this Christmas (yes, I have already made a second one to give away!). The optional addition of a tassel adds just the right amount of drama to this simple, textured pattern. Not to mention you can make the ENTIRE scarf with one (yes, ONE!) cake of yarn!

How Long Does It Take To Crochet That?
How long it takes to crochet something varies depending on your skill & how fast you crochet. But that isn’t a helpful answer is it?
Well, I’ve developed a yarn calculator to help you get the answer to this question.
It will help you calculate exactly how much time you’ll spend crocheting a project.
All you need to know is how much yarn you will use on the project in either meters, yards or skeins. Then crochet your test square & time it.
Calculate how long it takes to crochet that.

About The Pattern
This pattern is one size, with the scarf running approximately 30″ long at the spine and 40″ across. You can expect some give and take in sizing based on variation within yarn weights and on your tension.
A recommended gauge is listed to help get the size you desire, but if you prefer a shawl version – a little longer, wider, and with more drape – the instructions for that modification are included in the PDF available for purchase in my Ravelry store.
As it is, the scarf version is the one I plan to wear all fall and winter – ya know, with my skinny jeans, boots, and pumpkins spice latte (yes, that counts as an accessory, in my book!).

- Chain 1 or Chain 2 at the beginning of rows DOES NOT COUNT. Chain 2 in the center DOES NOT COUNT toward the final stitch count at the end of each row.
- Turning is implied, not written. You will, of course, turn at the end of each row.
- Crochet braids are worked by skipping 3 stitches, treble crochet in next three stitches, working either in front of or behind (as marked in the pattern) treble crochet in the 3 skipped stitches, beginning with the first skipped stitch, working toward the first 3 treble crochet. This video tutorial shows braids worked in front and behind.
- Stitches worked in the SAME stitch are written with the number before the stitche (i.e. 2 hdc in first st), instructions written with the number after the stitch are worked individually across the same number of stitches (i.e. hdc 31).
- Stitches written in (parenthesis) are worked in the same stitch or indicated space.
- Stitches between *stars* are repeated. The TOTAL number of times the series of stitches is worked is given. (i.e. *sk 3 hdc, tr in next 3 hdc, working IN FRONT, tr in skipped 3 hdc* x3 = work the series of stitches a total of three times)
