You’re going to love the crochet Twist & Stripe Hat, because it’s such a great crochet hat for fall.
What’s so great about the crochet Twist & Stripe Hat, is the fact that it is easy to adjust to size to fit anyone from kids to adult.
This crochet beanie is rather quick to make & it’s also offers a great fit due to the short row technique used. Sounds difficult? It’s not as hard as it might sound.

The Yarn
To make the crochet Twist & Stripe hat, I used a self striping yarn called Tweed Stripes from Lion Brand yarn in the color Orchid. Unfortunately it’s a discontinued yarn, however I couldn’t resist using the yarn I had at hand.
When making this hat, I would recommend that you substitute with some 5 Bulky yarn.
The details for this yarn is: 1 skein is: 3 oz / 85 g, 144 yards / 85 meter.
A GREAT FALL CROCHET PROJECT
We’re diving into fall & winter, that means it’s time for crocheting hats, scarves, headbands & everything warm & cozy.
Who doesn’t love the cozy season filled with hygge?d
How Long Does It Take To Crochet That?
How long it takes to crochet something varies depending on your skill & how fast you crochet. But that isn’t a helpful answer is it?
Well, I’ve developed a yarn calculator to help you get the answer to this question.
It will help you calculate exactly how much time you’ll spend crocheting a project.
All you need to know is how much yarn you will use on the project in either meters, yards or skeins. Then crochet your test square & time it.
Calculate how long it takes to crochet that.

Notes
- This crochet pattern is written in US terms.
- All measurements given are unblocked.
- Note that measurements are given as exact as possible. But crochet tension & technique might give variations in the result, that changes from person to person.
- Read pattern instructions carefully before beginning to make sure you understand everything. It might save you hours frogging your work & crocheting it again!
- Make a swatch that measure at least 10 x 10 cm / 4 x 4 inches using the stitch the gauge is given for. If your swatch matches the gauge, you’re good to go. If the gauge is wrong, you might need to change your hook. Go up in crochet hook size if your stitches are smaller & go down in crochet hook size if your stitches are bigger. Learn more about testing gauge.
- Check yarn info if you want to find an alternative or test your yarn against the gauge. Learn more about substituting yarn.
- This pattern is written for 1 size, however size adjustments are suggested under the heading “Size & Measurements”.
- At the end of each row, the stitch count is given in parenthesis.
Size & Measurements
Circumference (measured along the lower edge): 50 cm / 19.6 inches
Hat height: 20 cm / 7.9 inches
* The rows are twisting & the measurable hat height is measured across rows & now along rows.
Size Adjustments
- Note: Any size adjustments affect yarn usage & you might need more/less yarn than suggested.
- Make the hat higher by adding extra stitches before you start row 1, added/reduced by 1 stitches at a time.
- Adjust hat circumference by adding/reducing the number of rows you crochet. To make it easy to assemble the hat with the same yarn tail, end with an odd row.

Stitches You Will Need
You’ll need to know slip stitches & single crochet stitches.
Techniques You Will Need
CROCHETING IN THE FRONT & Back LOOP:
This means that you will not crochet through the whole stitch as usual. A typical stitch contains two loops. One in the front, nearest you, and another stitch in the back, furthest away from you. One is called the front loop (the one nearest you), the other one the back loop, the one furthest away from you.
For this pattern you will crochet slip stitches through the front loop & back loop, as well as single crochet stitches in the back loop (BLsc).
CROCHETING SHORT ROWS:
Crocheting short rows is used to shape your crochet piece. For this pattern to shape the top of the hat.
To crochet short rows you will not finish a row, but leave a few stitches unworked, then turn & start a new row. Then after a row or more come back to those stitches & work them.
