Here’s the fuzzy Oscar the Grouch Crochet Hat in a fun and FREE pattern. Soon you’ll also be hoarding and loving trash in a very grouchy sort of way!
“I love trash!” sings Oscar, and well, we love Oscar the Grouch! There’s something memorable about the slightly flawed characters, the ones who have real quirks, that’s somehow a lot more relatable.
I tried to capture his grouchy appearance. So in this Oscar the Grouch crochet hat, his features include his oval eyes, and a long furrowed unibrow. They cover his eyes just slightly and are angled to give him a sharp look.
This fuzzy Oscar the Grouch Crochet Hat is made from eyelash yarn and acrylic worsted weight yarn (worked together as if 1 strand).
If I’m using the Ice Yarn regular eyelash yarn, I’ll use 2 strands of the eyelash and 1 strand of the worsted weight acrylic yarn together.
But if I’m using the Ice Yarn long eyelash yarn, I only need to use 1 strand of the eyelash and 1 strand of the worsted weight acrylic yarn together.

Oscar the Grouch Crochet Hat Pattern
LEVEL: Easy
CROCHET HOOKS:
5.5mm

These are my favorite hooks to use.
YARN:
Ice Yarn – Green Eyelash
(You’ll need at least 3 skeins of the 50g for adult size)
Red Heart Super Saver – worsted weight, acrylic yarn
– Spring Green
– White
– Coffee
– Black (very small amount for the pupils)
NOTIONS:
– Yarn Needle
– Stitch Marker
– Scissors
OSCAR CROCHET HAT BASE (make in green)
Crochet the Hat Base by going over to my Cookie Monster Hat crochet pattern.
Follow the Hat base there, but you’ll just want to crochet it in the color green!
It includes all the sizes from toddler to adult.
FOR ADULT SIZE
OSCAR EYEBALL (make 2) – Adult and Teen Size
With white yarn
Round 1: 4 sc into magic ring.
Round 2: 2 sc in each st around – 8 sc.
Round 3: [2 sc in next st, sc in next st] around – 12 sc.
Round 4: [2 sc in next st, sc in next 2 st] around – 16 sc.
Round 5-8: Sc in each st around.
Round 9: [Sc2tog, sc in next 2 st] around – 12 sc.
Round 10: [Sc2tog, sc in next st] around- 8 sc.
Round 11: Sc2tog around – 4 sc.
Fasten off, leaving a long tail.
PUPIL (make 2) – Adult and Teen Size
With black yarn
Round 1: 8 sc into magic ring, sl st into first sc.
Fasten off, leaving a long tail.
UNIBROW – Adult and Teen Size
With brown yarn
Row 1: Ch 38, sc in next 18 ch, hdc in next ch, sc in next 18 ch – 37 st.
Row 2: Ch 1, turn, sc in next 18 st, [hdc, dc, hdc] in next st, sc in next 18 st – 39 st.
Row 3: Ch 1, turn, sc across – 39 sc.
Fasten off, leaving a long tail.

OSCAR EYEBALL (make 2) – Toddler Size
With white yarn
Round 1: 4 sc into magic ring.
Round 2: 2 sc in each st around – 8 sc.
Round 3: [2 sc in next st, sc in next 3 st] around – 10 sc.
Round 4: [2 sc in next st, sc in next 4 st] around – 12 sc.
Round 5: [Sc2tog, sc in next 4 st] around – 10 sc.
Round 6: [Sc2tog, sc in next 3 st] around – 8 sc.
Fasten off, leaving a long tail.
PUPIL (make 2) – Toddler Size
With black yarn, 6 sc into magic ring, sl st to join to first sc.
Fasten off, leaving a long tail.
UNIBROW – Toddler Size
With brown yarn
Row 1: Ch 28, sc in next 13 ch, hdc in next ch, sc in next 13 ch – 27 st.
Row 2: Ch 1, turn, sc in next 13 ch, [hdc, dc, hdc] in next st, sc in next 13 ch – 29 st.
Fasten off, leaving a long tail.

With white yarn
Round 1: 4 sc in magic ring.
Round 2: 2 sc in next st around – 8 sc.

Round 5-6: Sc in each st around.
Round 7: [Sc2tog, sc in next 5 st] around – 12 sc.

Round 9: Sc2tog around – 4 sc.
Fasten off, leaving a long tail.
PUPIL (make 2) – Child Size
With black yarn
Round 1: 8 sc into magic ring, sl st into first sc.
Fasten off, leaving a long tail.
UNIBROW – Child Size
With brown yarn
Row 1: Ch 34, sc in next 16 ch, hdc in next ch, sc in next 16 ch – 33 st.
Row 2: Ch 1, turn, sc in next 16 ch, [hdc, dc, hdc] in next st, sc in next 16 ch – 35 st.
Row 3: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st across – 35 sc.
Fasten off, leaving a long tail.

ASSEMBLY
1. Sew Eyeballs onto Head. The widest part of the eyeball should be about 2 rounds up from bottom of Hat Base.
2. Sew Pupils to middle of the Eyeballs.
3. Sew down the Unibrow. It should cover the top of the Eyeballs slightly. I only like to sew the top part of the unibrow down and leave it hanging over the eyes. See the photo below to see where I sew down.
4. Hide all ends and cut off.
