Crochet Moon Cycle Mobile – Free Crochet Pattern

This darling crochet moon cycle mobile has a wonderful and interesting contrast of color for baby! She will love looking at this simple crochet mobile. The pattern is simple and made with basic stitches. You can even put the moons onto a baby gym for more baby play.

I’m in this crazy place where I want to make-all-the-things for baby, but have no time because taking care of a newborn is seriously time consuming, all while wanting to make-all-the-things for Christmas!
I think next year I will just start on 2020 Christmas stuff in January… that might give me enough time, right? 

I had the idea for this cute mobile a few months ago, and was luckily able to complete it before Cubbie was born. Due to our Plaid CAL and Plaid Week patterns, I couldn’t fit in the schedule, so I am excited to share it today.

What you need: (affiliate links)
– 4mm Hook
– Shine Worsted 1 ball each in White, Black and Robot (Medium Weight Cotton)
– 10″ embroidery hoop
– Darning Needle
– Wooden Beads

Abbreviations: US Terms
Ch – chain
Sc – single crochet

FULL MOON/NEW MOON

Make 2 in White, 5 in Black and 5 in Robot. 
Start with a magic ring
1. Sc 8 into ring. (8 sts)
2. Ch 1. Work 2 sc in each st around. Join with a sl st. (16 sts) 
3. Ch 1. *Sc in next st. Work 2 sc in next st.* work all around the circle. Join with the first st. (24 sts) 
4. Ch 1. *Sc in next 2 sts. Work 2 sc in next st* work all around the circle. Join with the first st. (32 sts) 
5. Ch 1. Sc in next st. Work 2 sc in next st. *Sc in next 3 sts. Work 2 sc in next st* work 7 times. Sc in last 2 sts. Join with first st. (40 sts) 
6. Ch 1. *Sc in next 4 sts. Work 2 sc in next st* work all around the circle. Join with the first st. (48 sts)
Tie off.  

HALF MOON

(make 2 in White) 
Ch 2. 
1. Work 3 sc in first ch. (3 sts). Turn. 
2. Ch 1. Work 2 sc in each st across. Turn. (6 sts) 
3. Ch 1. *Sc in next st. Work 2 sc in next st*  work 3 times. Turn. (9 sts) 
4. Ch 1. *Sc in next 2 sts. Work 2 sc in next st*  work 3 times. Turn. (12 sts) 
5. Ch 1. *Sc in next 3 sts. Work 2 sc in next st*  work 3 times. Turn. (15 sts)
6. Ch 1. *Sc in next 4 sts. Work 2 sc in next st*  work 3 times. Turn. (18 sts)
Sl st across the remaining edge to give it a cleaner look. Tie off, leave a long tail. 

CRESCENT MOON

(make 2)
Ch 16.
1. Starting in 2nd ch from hook, sl st in next 2 chs. Sc in next 2 chs. Work 2 sc in next ch.  Sc in next 5 chs. Work 2 sc in next ch. Sc in next 2 chs. Sl st in next 2 chs. Turn. (17 sts)
2. Ch 1. Sk same st and next st. Sl st in next st. Sc in next st. Hdc in next st. Work 2 dc in next st. *Dc in next 2 sts. Work 2 dc in next st. * work twice. Hdc in next st. Sc in next st. Sl st in next st. (16 sts) 
Tie off. 

CONSTRUCTION

Place your moon pieces together. The two white moons go together, the black and robot moons go together and a black goes on the back  (or front) of each of the rest of the moon pieces. I decided after taking this photo to put the moon pieces on the black circles.  

Start by sewing each of the partial moons to a black or robot circle. Use one of the long tails and a darning needle.

Next, sew a circle to the back of each of them.
Finish the new moon and full moon by sewing the two white moons together and the black to the robot moon. 

Cut 6 equal lengths of white yarn (twice the length of how low you want them to hang from the bottom of the mobile.) Using your darning needle, hang all 6 moons on the yarn. 

Next, add beads so the noons have some weight. I got my beads at Joann in a bead assortment pack.  

 
Tie a knot to each end, then attach to the non-adjustable side of your embroidery hoop. You can do this by  holding the knotted end on the inside of the hoop, them pushing the attached moon end through the loop you made at the top. 

Next, comes the tricky part: cut 3 equal lengths of yarn. Fold them in half, and  tie them with a loop knot making 6 strands at the bottom of the knot. Tie them to the hoop near where each moon is attached, taking care that each one is tied at an equal length so the hoop hangs flat and level. 

You can also attach the moons to a little baby gym! The baby might enjoy the contrast of the black and white while she is playing! 

Cubbie is still pretty tiny but she will spend 5 minutes staring at the crochet moons on her gym. So cute!
