About Raffamusa Designs

Although Raffaella’s art teacher suggested she go to art school, she studied sciences instead, graduated in Biotechnology, obtained a Ph.D. in Structural Biology, and pretty much forgot about art. However, while writing her doctoral dissertation, she re-discovered painting, jewelry making, and crafting as a stress release. She also wanted to go back to cross stitch, her biggest childhood passion! But she found out that buying a crochet hook and a ball of yarn was way cheaper. So, she gave crochet a shot and never stopped crocheting since! She started RaffamusaDesigns in February 2019 to share her free crochet patterns, but also to create a stress-free web corner where all crafters can come, relax, and take a break from their busy lives!

Misty Grey Tunisian Poncho

Free Tunisian Crochet Poncho Pattern by Raffamusa Designs

Hello underground crafters, this is Raffaella from Raffamusa Designs. I am so happy to share with you my new pattern for this Misty Grey Tunisian Poncho realized in Tunisian crochet!

If you are a beginner at Tunisian crochet, do not feel intimidated or think that this poncho is too difficult for you to make. As a beginner, you might have probably already made a couple of Tunisian scarves or headbands. Very well so because two rectangular pieces, A and B (see figure below), are really all we need to construct the Misty Grey Tunisian Poncho. So, you can think of this poncho as a bigger scarf or a much bigger headband!

Construction

We will crochet both A and B starting from the bottom band with blue yarn, and move up to the grey body of the poncho. The bottom band has a fun zigzag motif obtained from the combination of Tunisian simple stitches and open Tunisian puffs. The body has a very elegant diagonal texture given by the diagonal lattice stitch. One advantage of the diagonal lattice stitch is that it creates a very thick and warm layer, which is just ideal for chilly days.

Once A and B are ready, we are going to sew them together. If you hate sewing as much as I do, don’t worry. The sewing of A and B will be the only sewing involved in the construction of the Misty Grey Tunisian Poncho. As you will be able to see by scrolling down through the pattern, the cowl is not a separate piece. Instead, it is crocheted directly attached to the poncho.

As a finishing touch, we will add some fringes, et voilà! Our poncho will be ready!

Two Different Tunisian Hook Sizes

For crocheting the poncho, we will use two different hook sizes. For the blue band with the Tunisian puffs, we will use a 6.5-mm hook, while for the main body we will switch to a 10.0-mm hook. The reason for this is that the diagonal lattice stitch works up much tighter than the puffy stitch. So, a larger hook is necessary for maintaining a constant width and fluffiness throughout the project.

I hope you’ll enjoy crocheting the Misty Grey Tunisian Poncho. Please, do not hesitate to contact me if you need any help or support. I am looking forward to seeing all your beautiful makes!

Seaming

  • With the right side facing up, place the smaller piece (B) at the left, bottom side of the bigger piece (A), as shown in figure 1. Sew the two pieces together using the mattress stitch.
  • Be careful not to skip any rows on either side.

Cowl

  • Place your work with the wrong side facing up, like shown in the image below.
  • Using the 10.00-mm crochet hook, join the Misty Grey (803) yarn at the outer end of piece B The joining of the yarn will be your very first vertical loop.
  • 1. Working on the top, closing ch of B, pick up a loop from each of the next 52 (48, 56) sts. Keep picking up loops from the ch on the side of A for 38 (24, 54) sts. (91 sts) (73, 111 sts)

Little Tip

  • Before continuing, double-check that the cowl is the right size for you. If you want a larger cowl, you would have to undo some rows of B. If you want to narrow your cowl, then add some extra rows to B.
  • 2. Sk the first vertical bar (as for regular Tunisian crochet). Work one increase into the next vertical bar. (Insert your hook under the next two bars, yo, and pick up a loop. Insert your hook back into the first bar of the two you just picked, yo, and pull up a loop) for 25 (23, 27) times. Work 2 increases. Repeat instructions in between brackets this time for 17 (10, 25) times. Make one tss, and one more increase. Last st. (95 sts) (77, 115)

How to make an increase

  • Identify the next vertical bar in which you will be working the increase.
  • Make one tss into the indicated vertical bar.
  • Find the ch between the indicated vertical bar and the following one. Insert your hook back into the same vertical bar and the ch at the same time. Yo and draw the yarn through both loops on your hook.
  • You now have two sts worked on the same vertical bar. That is your increase.
  • 3. Sk the very first vertical bar. Work one increase into the next vertical bar. (Insert your hook under the next two bars, yo, and pick up a loop. Insert your hook back into the first bar of the two you just picked, yo, and pull up a loop) for 26 (24, 28) times. Work 2 increases. Repeat instructions in between brackets for other 18 (11, 26) times. Work one more increase. Last st. (99 sts) (81, 119)
  • 4. Sk the first vertical bar. *Insert your hook under the next two bars, yo, pull up a loop. Insert your hook into the first of the two bars, yo, pull up a loop. Repeat from * other 47 (38, 57) times. One tss, last st. (99 sts) (81, 119)
  • 5. Sk the very first vertical bar. One tss. *Insert your hook under the next two bars, yo, pull up a loop. Insert your hook into the first of the two bars, yo, pull up a loop. Repeat from * other 47 (38, 57) times. Last st. (99 sts) (81, 119)
  • 6-19. Keep alternating rows 4 and 5. (99 sts) (81, 119)
  • 20. Tss all across. (99 sts) (81, 119)
  • Fasten off by sl st into each vertical bar across.

Final Seaming

  • Keeping the right side up, bring the sides c and c’ close together. Start seaming them from the bottom. Once you get to the cowl, keep seaming sides d and d’.

Fringes

  • Cut strings of Misty Grey (803) yarn of approximately 13 cm (5.2”). Pair two strings of yarn and attach the first fringe at the first grey row on the long side of A. Keep joining fringes at every other row. To secure them, you can make a simple knot.
  • Weave in all ends.
  • Your Misty Grey Tunisian Crochet Poncho is ready!
