What better way to get in your splash of green during St. Patrick’s Day then by sporting a cute clover hat! I wanted to create a pattern that would capture the St. Patty’s spirit, but also could be worn outside of the holiday. The pattern below features a stretchy hat band that resembles ribbed knitting, and then a simple bottom-up crocheted hat pattern. The hat is then finished off by adding a 3-leaf clover applique and a cute embroidered 4 leaf clover. I hope you enjoy it!

MATERIALS

Crochet Hooks: E/3.50mm, G/4.00mm, H/5.00mm
Light worsted weight yarn in white and green. I used Bernat Softee Baby yarn in white, and scrap amounts of green yarn that I had on hand in a similar weight
Yarn or tapestry needle
Scissors
(Optional) pom-pom form - or cardboard to create your own

ABBREVIATIONS

Ch = chain
Sl st = slip stitch
sc = single crochet
hdc = half double crochet
dc = double crochet
tr = treble crochet
BLO = back loop only
FLO = front loop only
inv scd = invisible single crochet decrease: Insert hook into the BLO of stitch indicated, insert hook into BLO of next stitch, yo, pull up a loop, yo, pull thru all loops on hook.

HAT INSTRUCTIONS

Sizes

Toddler (Child, Teen, Adult)

Stretchy Hat Band

Gauge: In stretchy band stitch pattern as written below, using a 4mm hook: 6 sts = 1.25″; 14 rows = 3″

Row 1 (RS): Using green yarn and a 4mm crochet hook, ch 8 (8, 9, 9), working into the back loop the second ch from the hook, SC in each chain across. Turn. (7, 7, 8, 8 sts)

Row 2: Ch 1, BLO, sl st in each st across. Turn.

Row 3: Ch 1, BLO, sc in each st across. Turn.

Rows 4 – 59 (67, 77, 85): Rep Rows 2 – 3.

Approximate length at this point (un-stretched): 12.75″ (14.35″, 16.5″, 18.25″)

Row 60 (68, 78, 86) – Seam: With RS facing out, bring the first row up to meet the last row. Ch 1, slip stitch the rows together to complete the seam. (7, 7, 8, 8 sts)

Do not fasten off. Continue on to Set-Up Body of Hat.

Set-up Body of the Hat

Gauge: With 5mm hook and continuing with green yarn, in sc: 8 sts = 2″; 7 rows = 2″

The entire Body of Hat is worked in continuous rounds. You can use a stitch marker or scrap of yarn to mark the beginning of each round if helpful.

Rd 1: Using a 5mm crochet hook and working into the sides of the rows of the stretchy hat band, ch 1, work 64 (72, 80, 88) sc evenly around. Do not join.

Rd 2: sc in BLO in each st around.

Body of the Hat

Switch to white yarn, *SC in BLO in each st around*
Repeat from * until hat measures 5”/5.5”/6”/6.5”

Crown Shaping

Rd 1: *BLO inv scd, BLO sc in each of the next 6 sts* repeat around. (56, 63, 70, 77 sts)

Rd 2: *BLO inv scd, BLO sc in each of the next 5 sts* repeat around. (48, 54, 60, 66 sts)

Rd 3: *BLO inv scd, BLO sc in each of the next 4 sts* repeat around. (40, 45, 50, 55 sts)

Rd 4: *BLO inv scd, BLO sc in each of the next 3 sts* repeat around. (32, 36, 40, 44 sts)

Rd 5: *BLO inv scd, BLO sc in each of the next 2 sts* repeat around. (24, 27, 30, 33 sts)

Rd 6: *BLO inv scd, BLO sc in the next st* repeat around. (16, 18, 20, 22 sts)

Rd 7: *BLO inv scd* repeat around. (8, 9, 10, 11 sts)

Fasten off leaving a long tail of yarn. Using a yarn needle, weave the tail of yarn in and out of the stitches from the last round, pull tail to cinch the hat closed. Bind off and weave in ends.

Clover Applique

Rd 1: Using green yarn and size F crochet hook, ch 5, 3tr into 1st chain, ch 4, sl st into 1st chain, *ch 4, 3tr into 1st chain, ch 4, sl into 1st chain* repeat from * twice until you have 3 petals total

Rd 2: *3 sl along the ch, sc in next st, 5 dc in same st, sl in next st, 5 dc in next st, sc in same st, 3 sl along the ch, sl* repeat until cover all three leaves.

Tail: sl into the center, ch 13, turn, sl st in 2nd chain from the hook, sl st in each remaining stitch along the chain. Bind off; leave long tail to stitch clover onto hat.

Finishing

Using long tail of yarn and yarn needle, stitch the three leaf clover onto the hat.

Cut a fresh piece of green yarn about 18” long. Using yarn needle, embroider four leaf clover onto hat as pictured in photo below.
