Design
I designed the Amelia Shawl a little while back which was a rectangle shawl, you can read more about it here! When looking for a stitch to use i wanted something quite open and lacy and you know when sometimes a stitch just really stands out to you it was one of those and i just knew straight away i wanted to use it.

Designing the Amelia asymmetrical shawl took me 5 hours! Them darn stitches! Stitches just didn’t seem to fit right as i was trying to get it to increase, it took so many attempts to figure this out, i even thought at one point this just cant be done but 5 hours later i done it and you know what it felt so good that i achieved what i set out to do.
I would have to say the Amelia asymmetrical shawl is an intermediate crochet pattern because of the increases on the one side, you do really need to know where to put your stitches.
Even though i have tried to explain it the best that i can it is just one of those patterns that you need to be fully aware of all your stitches and because of that i can’t really mark it as beginner friendly. That is not to say though that if you are a beginner you can’t have a go as you may be further along in your crochet than you thought.
I really like to stretch my shawls out when blocking as it makes the stitches look so lacy. This shawl has a 75.5 inch wingspan after blocking, i originally only crocheted to 65 inches so it grew a lot when blocking! If you are looking to go even longer you can carry on crocheting this to any wingspan size you want by repeating the repeated rows below.
Yarn:
For this shawl pattern i used Cascade 220 which has an AMAZING amount of different shades which i absolutely love when choosing yarn for projects. It is made with 100% highland Peruvian wool and is perfect for shawl projects as it blocks so nicely as it really opens up the stitch definition and that is exactly what you want when blocking a shawl.
This yarn is classed as more of a high end yarn but when you are making a shawl that you want to last for years then you should go for a yarn that will stand the test of time and i really feel this yarn is perfect for that. You will need 660 yards for your shawl.

Yarn Substitutions:
You can easily substitute the yarn i used for a more of an affordable yarn or one that is machine washable. Just remember acrylic yarn doesn’t wet block as well as wool but you could always carefully steam block your shawl.

Amelia Asymmetrical Shawl
R1. Ch4, join with a slip stitch to beg ch to form a ring, ch2, work (1dc, ch2, 1dc) in ring, turn
R2. Ch3, 1dc in very first dc st, ch1, 1dc in same dc st, ch3, 1sc in last dc st, turn
R3. Ch3, 1dc in very first sc st, ch2, 2dc, in next ch3 loop, 2dc in next ch1 sp, 2dc in very last dc st, turn
R4. Ch4, 1sc in 2nd ch from hook, ch3, 1dc in very first dc, ch1, skip next 4dc, 1dc in next dc, ch3, 1sc in very last dc st, turn

Repeat rows 5-8 until shawl measure 65 inches approx finishing on row 8.
Fasten off and weave in ends. Move onto blocking.
Notes:
If you would like your shawl longer, carry on repeating rows 5-8 but please note you will need more yarn to do this.
Blocking:
Soak finished shawl for 20 minutes in cool water and squeeze excess water out gently. Do not twist. Lay damp shawl on blocking boards and stretch to 75.5 inch wingspan x 34 inch Depth (or to your desired wingspan and Depth) use blocking pins to hold in place. Let your shawl dry completely before unpinning.
