Crochet Wavy Pad using wiggly crochet

The Crochet Wavy Pad is a fun square to make using the wiggle or wiggly crochet technique. The crochet waves form a ruffle effect over a mesh base. It’s a great way to make a dishcloth, washcloth, hot pad, trivet, pot holder and more!

Wiggle crochet is a technique that has been around for a very long time. I remember seeing hot pads and dishcloths made in the 1930s and 1940s. Many were made of a much thinner yarn. Some samples I have were made with a cotton crochet thread. And some where made with a fine 100% wool yarn. I think you’ll like my crochet wavy pad.

What yarn to use for this pattern?

There’s always a big discussion, to put it midly, as to what yarn is best when making certain items. How do you plan on using this crochet wavy pad? Washcloth, dishcloth, hot pad, pot holder, trivets, etc. all have different uses. Through the years I have changed my thoughts on some things.

I used to use 100% cotton for dishcloths. After having tried 100% acrylic, I tend to like that better for dishcloths now. It dries quicker, scrubs better, and doesn’t grow any mold or mildew. Plus it keeps its shape nicely after machine washing and drying it.

I’m still up in the air with hot pads and pot holders. I used to use either 100% cotton or 100% wool. With all the fancy scents, and dyes, and new techniques for producing yarn, I’ve been picky in my choices. Nowadays, I prefer organic, natural color, 100% virgin wool for things that might get a very hot pot put on it. However, if I’m using something to put a hot dish on for the table, I’m good with 100% cotton yarn. And that’s what I made my sample crochet wavy pad with!

Just some things to consider when making your yarn selection!

Stitches used in this crochet wavy pad.

For this crochet wavy pad, you’ll need to know how to crochet a chain, half double crochet, and double crochet. The stitches are pretty easy to make. However, there is a trick to crocheting around the mesh squares. That’s where the video comes in handy!
