Tunisian Crochet Body Pillow Pattern

This body pillow is an easy pattern to crochet and is worked up using a style of crocheting called Tunisian Crochet!

Keep on reading down to learn how to crochet a body pillow, about the yarn you’ll want to use and more!

Do you love simple to make crochet projects? If so, you’ll love this one! Promise!

This body pillow is worked in one piece and sewed up the side using the mattress stitch. It is that easy! Crochet a long piece of fabric and sew up the sides, stuff with fluff and finish up.

Sounds easy enough, right?

Note: If you’d prefer to join the sides using a different method, that is ok! You can do whatever joinging techniue that is familiar to you.

I also wanted to mention that this can be made to any width or length you wish. It also makes the perfect bolster pillow too! Whatever you decided to use this pillow for, it will look great!

The Crochet Stitches You’ll Need to Know

I used the Tunisian Simple Stitch and Tunisian Knit Stitch throughout the whole pillow.

These two stitches are easy to learn and are great for beginners who are just learning Tunisian crochet.

How to Tunisian Simple Stitch (TSS):

Foundation Row or Forward Pass:

The action of drawing up a loop from each stitch in a Tunisian row is called the Forward Pass, and counts as part of a row. A single Tunisian row is a forward pass and a return pass combined.

  1. Crochet any # of chains (CHs)
  2. insert your hook into the second CH from the hook, YO (yarn over) and pull up a loop, leaving that loop on your hook
  3. Repeat step 2 across the CH row

Return Pass:

  1. At the end of the row do not turn your work, YO and draw through the one loop.
  2. YO and draw through two loops
  3. Repeat step 5 across the row until one loop is left on the hook

Tunisian Simple Stitch TSS:

  1. Insert your hook into the second vertical bar (not the first) because the loop on the hook counts as a stitch.
  2. YO and draw the loop through the vertical bar. You have made one TSS!
  3. Insert hook in to next vertical bar, YO and draw up a loop.
  4. Repeat step 3 across the row.
  5. Follow the return pass instructions

Repeat the Tunisian SS & Repeat Pass instructions for the TSS

Tunisian Knit Stitch (TKS):

Foundation Row or Forward Pass:

The action of drawing up a loop from each stitch in a Tunisian row is called the Forward Pass, and counts as part of a row. A single Tunisian row is a forward pass and a return pass combined.

  1. Crochet any # of chains (CHs)
  2. insert your hook into the second CH from the hook, YO (yarn over) and pull up a loop, leaving that loop on your hook
  3. *Insert your hook into the next ch, YO and pull up a loop, leaving a loop on the hook
  4. Repeat from *across the CH row

Return Pass:

  1. At the end of the row do not turn your work, YO and draw through the one loop.
  2. YO and draw through two loops
  3. Repeat step 5 across the row until one loop is left on the hook

Tunisian Knit Stitch (TKS):

  1. *Insert the hook in between the front vertical bar but before the back thread of each stitch emerging through the back, YO and pull back through
  2. 1 TKS is made!
  3. Repeat from * across.

Make a RP like written above until 1 loop is left on the hook.

The Tunisian Knit Stitch Video will help to explain this stitch more. It is quite easy. Promise!

I chained 50 stitches and did three rows of TSS followed by three rows of TKS for the entire pattern. I used a total of two skeins of this colorful yarn which I will talk about below.

The Crochet Hook

To make it a little easier I used an afghan hook (H 5 mm) but that is not necessary since you could use any hook you have on hand.

I liked using the afghan hook for this body pillow because I could work it to the length I needed on the longer afghan hook and not have to worry about it falling off.

Afghan hooks are easy to find online or in most local craft stores like Micheal’s.

The Yarn

For this pillow I used Mandala Ombre Yarn from Lion Brand Yarn. It is a yarn that comes in a cake form and is considered a medium weight four yarn.

Mandala Ombre in Tranquil

It is 100% acrylic and is machine washable/ dryable plus it comes in a beautiful variety of colors.

I chose the colorway Tranquil, which is the fourth one shown below! I think this pillow would look good in any of the Mandala Ombre colors shown. Which one would you pick?
