Crochet Dog and Cat Magnet Tutorial

This crochet dog and cat magnet set are cute for your refrigerator or door. You can use any yarn color for your dog and cat. It’s a great way to use up scrap pieces of yarn.

Plus you can customize them. Feel free to add more or less details by changing colors or using embroidery thread or yarn.

Crochet Dog

The crochet dog is made using basic crochet stitches. We’ll be working for 6 rounds using just single crochet stitches. The muzzle is made with 3 rounds of single crochet. And the nose just for 1 round. If you need help with the crochet, please see my beginner crochet video on YouTube or the basic crochet video on Facebook.

Now the ears use several more stitches. These include single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet, and treble crochet. But it’s a pretty simple and consistent pattern, so please check out the written pattern for the crochet dog for more details.

After the pieces are made, everything is sewn together. I find hot glue works great to attach the magnet onto the back.

Crochet Cat

The crochet cat is made in a similar way as the crochet dog. You won’t need to make a separate muzzle or nose piece with the cat. Instead, I like to use a combination of yarn and embroidery thread to sew on the nose and mouth.

Plus I’m using the same 1/4″ (7mm) round buttons as eyes for the cat as I have for the dog.

The ears are a bit different on the crochet cat than the dog. We’ll be using a decreasing technique to get them to form a triangle shape. We want our cat’s ears a bit more pointy. We accomplish this by not using a chain-1 when turning along with skipping stitches.

As with the crochet dog, we’ll hot glue a magnet onto the back. If you can’t find magnet strips, I like to recycle my old magnets. I just gently peel (sometimes pry and tear off) the magnet piece from old magnets and hot glue them onto my new creations.
