Design
Today’s free crochet pattern is the Isla Top Down Shawl is a great easy shawl to get stuck into and very quick to work up! It is made up of dc stitches and ch3 spaces and it creates this very simple but elegant shawl that is so light to wear. The design of it almost looks like peepholes which makes it really interesting but then with the double crochet rows in between it covers you up also.
The Isla Top Down Shawl is one of those where you can easily pick up your hook, start crocheting and put it down if you need to without having to worry about if you may forget where you got to, i really like crochet patterns like that as it just fits in to your busy life but you can still enjoy the pattern at the same time.
I didn’t put a border on this crochet shawl pattern as i felt it didn’t really need it because of it being so simple but if you would prefer a border you can easily add your own on to it, i look forward to seeing them! For this shawl pattern i used Cascade 220 which has an AMAZING amount of different shades which i absolutely love when choosing yarn for projects. It is made with 100% highland Peruvian wool and is perfect for shawl projects as it blocks so nicely as it really opens up the stitch definition and that is exactly what you want when blocking a shawl.
This yarn is classed as more of a high end yarn but when you are making a shawl that you want to last for years then you should go for a yarn that will stand the test of time and i really feel this yarn is perfect for that. You will need 880 yards for your shawl.

Yarn Substitutions:
You can easily substitute the yarn i used for a more of an affordable yarn or one that is machine washable. Just remember acrylic yarn doesn’t wet block as well as wool but you could always carefully steam block your shawl.

R1. Ch278, 1dc in 2nd ch from hook, 1dc in each ch across, turn
R2. Ch1, 1dc in first 2dc * Ch3, skip next 3dc **, 1dc in each of the next 3dc * Repeat from * to * until 2dc remain ending last repeat at **, 1dc in last 2dc, turn
R3. Ch1, 1dc in very first dc, ch1, skip next dc, 3dc in next ch3 space * Ch3, skip next 3dc, 3dc in next ch3 space * Repeat from * to * until 2dc remain, ch1, skip next dc, 1dc in last dc, turn
R4. Ch1, 1dc in very first dc, 1dc in next ch1 space * Ch3, skip next 3dc **, 3dc in next ch3 space * Repeat from * to * until ch1 space and 1dc remain ending last repeat at **, 1dc in ch1 space, 1dc in last dc, turn
R5. Ch1, 1dc in each dc across and 3dc in each ch3 space across, turn (277dc)

Repeat rows 2-7 until shawl measures 15 inches (approx) finishing on row 5.
Fasten off and weave in ends. Move on to blocking.
Notes:
If you would like your shawl longer, carry on repeating row 2-7 finishing on row 5 but please note you will need more yarn to do this.
Blocking:
Soak finished shawl for 20 minutes in cool water and squeeze excess water out gently. Do not twist. Lay damp shawl on blocking boards and stretch to 68.5 inch width x 18.5 inch height (or to your desired width and height) use blocking pins to hold in place. Let your shawl dry completely before unpinning.
