Design

Today’s free crochet pattern is for the easy modern Darla Asymmetrical Shawl that is a comfortable everyday shawl with clean filet crochet spaces which creates lines going all the way across the shawl.

I really enjoy making asymmetrical shawls as they always look so different to most shawls and most of them are a lot easier to crochet than what you think! I wanted to create lines going all the way starting from the tip working all the way to the widest point and i really do love how it turned out! If you loved the Darla Shawl which is a top down crochet pattern you will definitely love this Darla Asymmetrical shawl too! This crochet pattern is a beginner plus pattern and it works up in no time.

Fun, free and easy crochet shawl pattern

The Darla Asymmetrical Shawl is made up of double crochet stitches and chain spaces with increasing on the one side, to help me remember the side i need to increase on i always use a stitch marker, i just place it in to any stitch on the side that i increase on so i know when i see that stitch marker i will be increasing at the start or at the end of the row, but other than that its very easy to crochet.

Yarn:

For this shawl pattern i used Cascade 220 which has an AMAZING amount of different shades which i absolutely love when choosing yarn for projects. It is made with 100% highland Peruvian wool and is perfect for shawl projects as it blocks so nicely as it really opens up the stitch definition and that is exactly what you want when blocking a shawl.

This yarn is classed as more of a high end yarn but when you are making a shawl that you want to last for years then you should go for a yarn that will stand the test of time and i really feel this yarn is perfect for that. You will need 880 yards for your shawl.

  • 100 grams
  • 220 yards /200 meters
  • 100% wool
  • This yarn is hand wash only / Cascade 220 superwash is machine washable

Yarn Substitutions:

You can easily substitute the yarn i used for a more of an affordable yarn or one that is machine washable. Just remember acrylic yarn doesn’t wet block as well as wool but you could always carefully steam block your shawl.

Repeat rows 12-21 until shawl measures 61.5 inch wingspan (approx)

Fasten off and weave in ends. Move on to blocking.

Notes:

If you would like your shawl longer, carry on repeating row 12-21 finishing on any row but please note you will need more yarn to do this.

Blocking:

Soak finished shawl for 20 minutes in cool water and squeeze excess water out gently. Do not twist. Lay damp shawl on blocking boards and stretch to 67 inch wingspan x 26 inch depth (or to your desired wingspan and depth) use blocking pins to hold in place. Let your shawl dry completely before unpinning.
