Design

Today’s free crochet pattern is the Jasmine Shawl is already a firm favorite shawl of mine, i chose this stitch pattern as it is very similar to the Grace Shawl and the Fantasia Shawl, worked in mainly double crochet stitches and with chain and single crochet stitches in between and it gives it such a lacy and light feel to it which makes it great for the warmer months.

The Jasmine Shawl is worked top down, you start with a long starting chain and then crochet in rows, i find even though it’s a long starting chain the overall shawl pattern goes super quick and who doesn’t want that! I made this shawl in three days but that was without blocking.

Lacy shawl close up.

Remember when you block your shawl to really stretch out the stitches, that’s when the stitches really show at their best and even though this is made with aran yarn, once blocked it becomes super light and wearable, i also love you can wear shawls like scarves too and that truly makes it a versatile piece!

Yarn:

For this shawl pattern i used Cascade 220 which has an AMAZING amount of different shades which i absolutely love when choosing yarn for projects. It is made with 100% highland Peruvian wool and is perfect for shawl projects as it blocks so nicely as it really opens up the stitch definition and that is exactly what you want when blocking a shawl.

This yarn is classed as more of a high end yarn but when you are making a shawl that you want to last for years then you should go for a yarn that will stand the test of time and i really feel this yarn is perfect for that. You will need 660 yards for your shawl.

  • 100 grams
  • 220 yards /200 meters
  • 100% wool
  • This yarn is hand wash only / Cascade 220 superwash is machine washable

Yarn Substitutions:

You can easily substitute the yarn i used for a more of an affordable yarn or one that is machine washable. Just remember acrylic yarn doesn’t wet block as well as wool but you could always carefully steam block your shawl.

Repeat rows 2 and 3 until shawl measures 14 inches approx finishing on row 3.

Fasten off and weave in ends. Move on to blocking.

Notes:

If you would like your shawl longer, carry on repeating row 2 and 3 finishing on row 3 but please note you will need more yarn to do this.

Blocking:

Don’t be scared to really stretch the shawl when blocking as it really opens up the stitches and gives them definition and makes your shawl lay completely flat.

Soak finished shawl for 20 minutes in cool water and squeeze excess water out gently. Do not twist. Lay damp shawl on blocking boards and stretch to 70 inch width x 18.5 inch height (or to your desired width and height) use blocking pins to hold in place. Let your shawl dry completely before unpinning.
