The Yarn

For this project I used Joy of Motion Favourite DK in the variegated colorways Havskum (MC) and Dypt Hav (CC). This is a 100% Superwash Merino Wool that is soft as a dream.

Pick your two favorite colors of yarn to crochet this raglan tee.

SWING BATTER SWING!

This project was inspired by baseball tees that have contrasting color sleeves. Designed to have 2-4″ of ease this is comfortable enough to wear while playing ball with your kids, but hip and cute enough to wear out with with your friends. It’s constructed top down, raglan style, worked intarsia through the yoke. You’ll hold 4 balls at once, but won’t have to carry any floats!

How Long Does It Take To Crochet That?

How long it takes to crochet something varies depending on your skill & how fast you crochet. But that isn’t a helpful answer is it?

Well, I’ve developed a yarn calculator to help you get the answer to this question.

It will help you calculate exactly how much time you’ll spend crocheting a project.

All you need to know is how much yarn you will use on the project in either meters, yards or skeins. Then crochet your test square & time it.

Calculate how long it takes to crochet that.

Notes

  • This crochet pattern is written in US terms.
  • All measurements given are blocked.
  • Note that measurements are given as exact as possible. But crochet tension & technique might give variations in the result, that changes from person to person.
  • Read pattern instructions carefully before beginning to make sure you understand everything. It might save you hours frogging your work & crocheting it again!
  • Make a swatch that measure at least 10 x 10 cm / 4 x 4 inches using the stitch the gauge is given for. If your swatch matches the gauge, you’re good to go. If the gauge is wrong, you might need to change your hook. Go up in crochet hook size if your stitches are smaller & go down in crochet hook size if your stitches are bigger. Learn more about testing gauge.
  • Check yarn info if you want to find an alternative or test your yarn against the gauge. Learn more about substituting yarn.
  • Pattern is written as follows for sizes, 1 (2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9).
  • This tee is constructed from the top down in joined and turned rounds. The yoke is worked intarsia so you will have 4 balls attached to the yoke, one for the front, back and each sleeve.
  • The yoke is worked raglan style with the increases occurring visibly along each side of the colour changes.
  • On the last st of your colour pull through with the next colour to finish your stitch.
  • Work your gauge swatch with your larger hook.
  • Pattern is written with 2-4” of ease. Depending on where you fall in the size range this may result in a looser fitting tee. If you are at the lower end of the size range you may wish to use the custom size guide to adjust the pattern to have 2” of ease.
  • Model is wearing a size 3 and has a 38” bust. Garment is fitting with 2” of ease.
  • At the end of each row, the stitch count is given in parenthesis.

End Yoke

For sizes 1 and 2 we need to add 2 more rounds before going to the body.

Round 1-2: ssc in each st around changing yarns in established places.

Go to Body.

Body

We will now join our yoke to create the body. Cut CC yarn from both sleeves. The body is worked in MC.

In round 2 work sc into the chs at the underarm.

Round 1: Ch 1, ssc 62 (70, 74, 85, 91, 98, 106, 114, 120) across back. Ch 2 (2, 6, 3, 5, 6, 6, 6, 8), pm on first ch made. Sk all CC sts. Ssc 62 (70, 74, 85, 91, 98, 106, 114, 120) across front, ch 2 (2, 6, 3, 5, 6, 6, 6, 8), pm on last ch made. Join with sl st to first ssc made. Turn. 128 (144, 160, 176, 192, 208, 224, 240, 256) sts including chs in sleeve.

Round 2: Ch 1, ssc in each st around. Join with sl st. Turn.

Continue repeating round 2, until your tee measures approximately 2.5 (2.75, 3, 3.25, 3.5, 3.5, 3.75, 4, 4)” from the arm hole. It should be just covering your bust. If you need to add additional length then keep repeating.

Waist Shaping

We will now decrease so that the tee stays closer to your waist and defines your shape. This is where you can use the custom size page to help determine how much to decrease. If you have a large chest but smaller waist, you may want to decrease more, and if your chest and waist are similar in size, you may want to decrease less or omit them completely.

Round 3: *ssc 4 (4, 4, 4, 5, 5, 5, 5, 6), ssc2tog. Repeat from * around. Ssc in any rem sts. 107 (120, 134, 147, 165, 179, 192, 206, 224) sts. Join with sl st to first ssc made. Turn.

Round 4: Ch 1, ssc in each st around. Join with sl st to first ssc made. Turn.

Continue repeating round 4, until your tee measures approximately 6.5 (6.5, 7, 7.5, 7.5, 8, 8, 8.5, 8.5)” from the arm hole. It should be hitting just before your hips start to curve out. Continue repeating if you need to add additional length.

Hip Shaping

We will now increase so that the tee stays fitted over your hips. This is where you can use the custom size page to help determine how much to increase. If you have larger hips, you may want to increase more. If you are narrower through the hips, you may want to increase less.

Round 5: *ssc 4 (4, 4, 4, 5, 5, 5, 5, 6), 2 ssc in next. Repeat from * around. Ssc in any rem sts. 128 (144, 160, 176, 192, 208, 224, 240, 256) sts.

Round 6: Ch 1, ssc in each st around. Join with sl st. Turn.

Continue repeating round 6, until your tee measures approximately 13.5 (14, 14, 14.5, 14.5, 15, 15, 15.5, 15.5)“ from the arm hole. Ensure you try on your tee to ensure that it is hitting you at the desired length. Continue repeating until you are satisfied with the length of your tee.

Switch to CC

Round 7-8: Ch 1, sc in each st around. Join with sl st. Turn.

Fasten Off.

Sleeve

We placed st markers on the chs closest to the back when joining the yoke. This st is where we will join the yarn. On round 1 work into the chs at the underarm as one st each. Repeat once for each sleeve. Use your CC.

Round 1: Join yarn at the marked st, ch 1, ssc  in each st around. 49 (52, 56, 59, 65, 70, 73, 78, 80) sts

Round 2: Ch 1, ssc in each st around. Join with sl st. Turn.

Continue repeating round 2 for a total of 6 rounds or until your sleeve is at your desired length.

Once you are at your desired length do one normal round of sc. Join with sl st.

Fasten off.

Finishing

Block according to fiber.

I like to soak my garment in lukewarm water with a non rinse soap like Soak for 20 minutes. Then lay flat to dry on blocking mats or a towel.

Weave in all ends.

Enjoy your new tee!
