About The Loophole Fox

Hi everyone! I’m Shannon, the Designer for The Loophole Fox and I am so excited to be featured by Marie today. I’ve been a creative type since I was a child and could always be found with some kind of artistic item in my hands – a paintbrush, pencil and paper, you name it. I picked up crochet at an early age and it’s been a love story since. I spent most of my adult life in the corporate sales world despite wanting to exist in an artistic world. About a year ago, I truly felt the calling to do something more and fulfill my artistic side, so I spent some time researching and discovering what I felt was right for me. It clicked for me when I realized that I never truly followed someone else’s crochet pattern and, with a huge amount of support from my husband, I started designing my own patterns and created my blog. I specialize in beginner to intermediate friendly crochet patterns that pack a punch of personality and I can’t wait to share them with you! My favorite part of this venture is getting to know those of you who use my patterns and fawning over the items you’ve created. Happy crocheting!

Retro Infinity Scarf

Moss Stitch in the Round Crochet Pattern by The Loophole Fox

The Retro Infinity Scarf uses warm colors and the moss (or linen) stitch to create a woven striped pattern perfect for fall. Using bulky (5) weight yarn, this infinity scarf works up quickly and is a great gift for any scarf lover (or yourself!).

Skill Level

  • Easy (Beginners should know how to slip stitch, chain and single crochet).

Materials

  • Yarn
    • Paintbox Yarns Simply Chunky, bulky/category 5, (100g/3.5oz, 136m/149yds) – You will need 3 colors total.
      • I used: Champagne White, Vintage Pink and Soft Fudge.
    • Yarn Usage (Approx):
      • Color A: 98 yards (2.3 oz, 90m)
      • Color B: 81 yards (2 oz, 75m)
      • Color C: 90 yards (2.1 oz, 82m)
    • You can substitute this yarn for any other bulky (5) yarn. Make sure to double check the gauge.
  • Crochet Hook: 6 mm/ J-10 or hook necessary to meet gauge
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry Needle

Gauge

  • 9 stitches in Moss Stitch (for the purposes of this gauge swatch, “stitches” = single crochets + ch 1) x 16 rows = 4 inches x 4 inches (10 cm x 10 cm)
  • Create the gauge swatch using this pattern:
  • Chain 19.
  • R1 – Sc in the third chain from the hook (This will count as both a single crochet and a chain 1). [Chain 1, skip one chain, sc in the next chain]. Repeat across the row to the end. (9 single crochets, 9 chain spaces).
  • R2 – Ch 2, turn. Skip 1st single crochet and sc in ch 1 space. [ch 1, skip single crochet, sc in next ch 1 spc] across the row. Your last sc of the row will be placed in the space created by the 2 chains when we started row 1.
  • Repeat row 2 until your gauge measures 4” in height (16 rows).

Finished Size

  • Approximately: 25 inches (63.5 cm) laid flat in length (52 inches/132 cm around) x 5 inches (13 cm) wide

Notes

  1. This pattern is worked in closed rounds, however, we will need to move over to the next chain 1 space to begin our new round.
    • To move over to the chain space we need to work in, you will slip stitch into the chain one space following your “slip stitch to close”. This means that your starting round will continually begin one stitch over from your previous row. This helps prevent a noticeable seam and keeps the rounds easy to follow.
  2. The chain 1 to begin your round never counts as a stitch. Always place your first single crochet in the same space (this is referenced throughout the pattern).
  3. You will need to join new colors every two rows. Always join them in the chain 1 space following the slip stitch you used to close your previous round with a standing single crochet.
    • I prefer to completely finish off the color and then join a new color using a standing single crochet for this pattern in the next chain 1 space to prevent slip stitching with a new color into the chain 1 space.
    • When you join your color in the last stitch of your previous round, this new color will show when you slip stitch into the chain 1 space and can look a bit messy.
  4. Every two rows you will be finishing off a color and adding a new color. If you prefer not to weave in a bunch of ends at the end of your project, I recommend taking the time to weave in the ends as you work or crochet over your ends.
    • If you prefer to crochet over your ends for each color change, you will want to work over these ends for two rows to completely hide the tail end of your yarn.
  5. If you would prefer a smaller or larger infinity scarf than what is written in the pattern, simply add or subtract stitches in your starting chain to achieve your desired size. You will, however, want to start with an EVEN number of chains regardless.

Stitch Abbreviations in US Terms

  • ch – chain
  • sc – single crochet
  • sk  – skip
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • […] – Instructions inside bracket are your repeat
  • Standing sc – standing single crochet *see “Special Stitch” below.

“Special stitch”

  • This pattern calls for a standing single crochet to join your new color. To work a standing sc, place your slip knot on your hook. Insert your hook into the stitch indicated by the pattern and work a single crochet as normal.
  • So you would: Place slip knot on your hook. Insert your hook into the stitch indicated, yarn over and pull a loop through the stitch, yarn over and pull through both loops on your hook.
  • Note: Moogly has a helpful video tutorial for the standing single crochet here.

  • R18 – sl st into the first ch 1 spc. Ch 1 (doesn’t count), sc in the same ch 1 spc. [ch 1, sk 1, sc in next ch 1 spc]. Repeat around until one stitch remains* Ch 1, sl st to the first sc to close.
  • Finish off Color C.
  • R19 – Join Color A in the ch 1 space directly after your slip stitch that ends R18 with a standing sc. [ch 1, sk 1, sc in next ch 1 spc]. Repeat around until one stitch remains. Ch 1, sl st to the first sc to close. Finish off Color A.
  • Now, we need to move on to placing a border around the other side of the scarf to finish it off. As you might have noticed, the chains to begin this scarf create a larger section of Color A than the others and throws off the look of the scarf.
    • What we will do is essentially work an additional round, but we will work it along the bottom of the chains using Color C. This keeps the color pattern correct and finishes the scarf so that the color and stitch pattern remain succinct.
    • So, flip your scarf so that you’ll be working along the bottom of the chains. You will still want your “right side” facing out toward you.
    • Find any “chain 1 space” which was created when we skipped a chain on row one and join Color C yarn with a standing sc.
  • R20 – Join Color C in any chain 1 space along the bottom of the work. We are going to work the same pattern as we have throughout this scarf, it’s just technically “upside down” along the bottom of the chains. So –  [ch 1, sk 1, sc in next ch 1 spc]. Repeat around until one stitch remains. Ch 1, sl st to the first sc to close.
  • Fasten off Color C.
  • Weave ends.
