The Yarn

For my Charleston crochet belt, I used Cygnet Yarns Cottony. It is a DK weight yarn with 46% cotton, 46% acrylic and 8% Viscose content. It is a lovely yarn to work with that has the best qualities from both cotton and acrylic. It is spiral twisted creating a gentle lustre and gives an excellent stitch definition. I have opted for more neutral colour in Oatmeal. If you are looking for yarn alternatives, I would recommend any cotton or cotton blend DK weight yarns for this project.

ABOUT THE CONSTRUCTION

The crochet belt is made up of two parts. The small flower square in the middle and the belt straps. The small square has a lovely flower detail in the middle created with popcorn stitches. The straps of the belt are then worked directly onto the square around 2 sides at the time. I have used basic single crochet stitch for the straps. I worked the stitch through back loop only to add a lovely texture. They are slightly tapered towards the end to create points. The belt is finished off with 3 strings on each side which are worked as part of the last row.

How Long Does It Take To Crochet That?

How long it takes to crochet something varies depending on your skill & how fast you crochet. But that isn’t a helpful answer is it?

Well, I’ve developed a yarn calculator to help you get the answer to this question.

It will help you calculate exactly how much time you’ll spend crocheting a project.

All you need to know is how much yarn you will use on the project in either meters, yards or skeins. Then crochet your test square & time it.

Calculate how long it takes to crochet that.

Notes

  • This crochet pattern is written in US terms.
  • All measurements given are unblocked.
  • Note that measurements are given as exact as possible. But crochet tension & technique might give variations in the result, that changes from person to person.
  • Read pattern instructions carefully before beginning to make sure you understand everything. It might save you hours frogging your work & crocheting it again!
  • Make a swatch that measure at least 10 x 10 cm / 4 x 4 inches using the stitch the gauge is given for. If your swatch matches the gauge, you’re good to go. If the gauge is wrong, you might need to change your hook. Go up in crochet hook size if your stitches are smaller & go down in crochet hook size if your stitches are bigger. Learn more about testing gauge.
  • Check yarn info if you want to find an alternative or test your yarn against the gauge. Learn more about substituting yarn.
  • The pattern starts with a square motif that becomes the middle of the belt
  • The belt is then created by working rows of sc blo around 2 edges of the square at a time
  • Last few rows are decreased at each end of the row to create more pointed ends to the belt
  • It is finished off with strings that are crocheted as part of the last row
  • Each string is created at either edge of the pointed end of the belt

Size Adjustments

  • the finished size of the square determines the width of the belt, if you prefer a wider belt work additional sc rounds of the square, working 1 sc in each st around and (1 sc, 2 ch, 1 sc) into corner 2 ch-sp
  • to adjust the length/circumference, add or take away same number of rows of sc blo to both sides of the belt (either side of the square to keep it in centre)

We try our best to include all crochet abbreviations in the list above for the crochet pattern, but sometimes we may forget one or two.
