Oasis Gloves and Headband Free Crochet Pattern

I was flipping through my crochet pattern notebook the other day and I ran across the pattern for the Oasis Gloves and Headband. I was shocked to realize that I never posted these patterns! These gloves are some of my favorite mittens that I actually use. (It turns out I don’t usually keep and use many of my creations – I usually gift them to people – but these ones I kept!). I love the little peekaboo finger hole so that I can use my phone even when I have my gloves on. So, I’d like to share the pattern with all of you (for free!)

Oasis Women's Mittens and Headband Free Crochet Pattern With Finger Hole for Screen Use

The Oasis gloves were my quick solution to my ever-freezing hands. Seriously – my fingers are like icicles in the winter. I picked up this gorgeous yarn during a local yarn shop crawl, and I just love the softness and the colors, so I knew I wanted to make something that was a “keeper”.

The Oasis Gloves pattern is meant to be a fairly simple pattern. For the most part, I don’t specify where to put increases or decreases, but I do tell you what rows to add them to. No need to count stitches constantly for this pattern! You will have to count a little bit to separate out the thumb holes, but I promise I kept the number crunching to a minimum! You can see the complete free pattern below, or you can purchase an ad-free PDF copy from Ravelry using the button below.

Supplies

  • 1 skein (100g/360y) fingering weight yarn. I used Three Irish Girls Glenhaven Cashmerino fingering yarn (80% Merino, 10% Cashmere, 10% Nylon). The gloves took me 70g. The large headband is approximately 23g, and the small is 16g.
  • Size G crochet hook – I love these Odyssey hooks from Furls Crochet!
  • Yarn/Tapestry Needle

Stitch Abbreviations

  • ch chain
  • st(s) stitch(es)
  • sk skip
  • sc single crochet
  • dc double crochet
  • fdc foundation double crochet
  • fpdc front post double crochet
  • bpdc back post double crochet
  • dec single crochet 2 together
  • inc work 2sc in next st

Pattern Notes

12 sts and 13 rows sc in round = 2″

The finished gloves are sized women’s small/medium, to fit hands measuring approximately 7-7.25” around the finger knuckles. The total length is approximately 10”.

A note on the colorwork: These gloves do not include any particular colorwork. The pattern apparent in the images is simply the effect of natural color pooling from the variegated yarn I used.

Here’s a video that shows foundation crochet stitches, including how to join them in the round:

The headband uses the same basic stitch pattern as the fingerless glove cuffs, and you can vary how many rows you work to make it wider or thinner, as desired.

How to Make the Oasis Gloves

oasis gloves

1-fdc 32, joining on last st (see video for instructions on how to join in the round using foundation crochet stitches. Alternatively, ch 35, dc in 4th ch from hook and across, then join) (32sts)

2-ch3, *fpdc, bpdc, repeat from * around, join (32sts)

3-repeat row 2 five times more (6 rows of alternating fpdc/bpdc total) (32sts)

4-sc around 3 rows, working in a continuous round without joins (32sts)

5-sc around, working 2 inc approximately opposite from each other in the round – the exact placement of these increases is not important. (34sts)

6-repeat previous row five more times, staggering the increases so they do not line up on top of each other every row. (44sts)

7-sc around, working 1 inc in the round – the exact placement of this increase is not important. (45sts)

8-repeat previous row three more times (48sts)

9-sc around 11 rows or until the glove measures approximately 3.5-3.75” from the top of the cuff.

Thumb Separation – Right Glove

10-If you care which side of the glove is the back or the front, you’ll need to make sure to stop with the back of the glove facing toward you. Continue working sc around until you get to the left side of the glove, where the thumb will be. sc6, then join to the top of the sc 13 stitches before the one you just made, then continue around the glove. (35sts).

11-Working only around the finger portion, not the thumb, continue working sc around, working 1 sc over thumb join (36sts)

12-sc around for 20 more rows or until glove measures 7” from the cuff, stopping at the thumb crease.

13-Optional – to add finger hole, sc1, ch4, sk 4 sts, sc around, then continue around, working 1 dec on the pinky side of the row (exact placement of decrease is not important). If you don’t want a finger hole, just sc those 4 sts instead of doing  (ch4, sk 4). (35sts)

Thumb Separation – Left Glove

10-If you care which side of the glove is the back or the front, you’ll need to make sure to stop with the back of the glove facing away from you. Continue working sc around until you get to the left side of the glove, where the thumb will be. sc6, then join to the top of the sc 13 stitches before the one you just made, then continue around the glove. (35sts)

11-Working only around the finger portion, not the thumb, sc around, working 1 sc over thumb join (36sts)

12-sc around for 20 more rows or until glove measures 7” from the cuff

13-Optional – to add finger hole, work around until you are 6 sts before the thumb crease, ch4, sk 4 sts, sc around, then continue around, working 1 dec on the pinky side of the row (exact placement of decrease is not important). If you don’t want a finger hole, just sc those 4 sts instead of doing a ch4, sk 4. (35sts)

Oasis Gloves Finger Hole

Both Gloves

14-sc around, working 1 dec on the pinky side of the glove (34sts)

15-repeat previous row twice more (32sts)

16-sc around, working 1 dec on thumb side and 1 dec on pinky side of the glove (30sts)

17-sc around, working 10 dec spread throughout row (20sts)

18-dec around row (10sts)

19-sc 3 together, then sew or slip stitch the remaining stitches to close the top of the glove

Finishing Thumb Hole

20-Join to thumb hole, sc around, working 3sc’s over the place where the thumbhole separates from the main glove (15sts)

21-sc around for 13 more rows (14 rows sc after thumb separation) or until thumb measures approximately 2.5”

22-dec around thumb, sew closed.

Variation – Fingerless Gloves

If you’re not into mittens, this design makes a great pair of fingerless gloves! Simply work the pattern until you’ve achieved your desired length, then finish off, voila!

Option - finish as fingerless gloves

Oasis Headband Pattern

To make the Oasis Headband, you’ll basically be making an extended version of the glove cuff.

1-fdc 64sts, joining on last stitch. (or ch 67, dc in 4th ch from hook and across, then join)

2-ch3, *fpdc, bpdc, repeat from * around, join.

3-repeat row 2 until headband is desired width, finish off. For the large headband, I worked 12 rows alternating fpdc/bpdc. For the smaller headband, I worked only 8 rows.

This headband is quite stretchy, and I’ve found the pattern above to fit a variety of head sizes, from child to adult. However, for a more custom fit, you may reduce the number of beginning foundation stitches used in multiples of 2.  As a guideline – here are approximate stitch counts for different headband sizes:

  • 13” – 38 sts
  • 15” – 44 sts
  • 17” – 50 sts
  • 20” – 58 sts
  • 22” – 64 sts
