Project

The goal of this CAL is for you to be able to use yarn that’s already in your stash to crochet all these handmade gifts. So I went to my leftover yarn drawer and see what I had that could work. And then I saw it…

I had some leftovers of faux-fur yarn laying around from last year’s Christmas patterns and from the knit Cloud 9 Sweater. Click below to see more Christmas patterns:

So, I decided to use the faux-fur and make a little ornament: a Snowman! But a very dashing one, with a top hat and a huge chunky scarf.

I know, I know… Faux-fur isn’t the easiest material to work with, as it’s hard to see the stitches. But, this is a small project and you can feel the stitches as you work. Additionally, with the help of stitch markers, it is easier to count the stitches. I promise you’ll be done in no time!

As you will see below, I used completely different yarns from each other. So, more than following the pattern exactly, use it as a guideline, to help you make your own snowman with the yarn that you have at home. And better yet, make more than one, make a bigger snowman, make a smaller hat, make a thinner scarf… make it your own! 🙂

Description

Meet the Crochet Snowman Christmas Ornament, my contribution to the 2020 Holiday Stashdown Crochet Along with CAL Central Crochet. A very simple pattern made out of two faux-fur balls, where you can use all your leftover yarn to make it your own!

Project Level

Easy

Materials

  • 13.5yds/ 12.25m of Katia Velour Solid, 80% nylon, 20% polyester [3.53oz/ 100g, 164yds/ 150m] in color 75 or another worsted weight faux-fur, cat. 4 yarn as A
  • 4yds/ 3.65m of Drops Safran, 100% cotton [1.76oz/ 50g, 174yds/ 159m] in unicolor 16 or another sport weight, cat. 2 yarn as B
  • 6.5 yds/6m of Rosarios 4 Bambino; 85% acrylic; 15% polyamide [3.53oz/ 100g, 174yds/ 159m] in color 16 or of another worsted, cat. 4 yarn as C
  • US size G-6, 4.00 mm crochet hook
  • US size 3.00 mm crochet hook
  • 3 stitch markers
  • Tapestry needle
  • Scissors
  • Filling (I used rags from an old t-shirt)

Gauge

  • Please refer to the finished dimensions for gauge.

Finished Dimensions

  • Snowman: 6”/ 15.25 cm around the “waist” x 3”/ 7.5 cm tall (without the hat)
  • Hat: 1”/ 2.5 cm tall
  • Scarf: 14”/35.5 cm wide

Abbreviations (US Terms)

  • BLO: back loop only
  • ch: chain
  • FLO: front loop only
  • MR: magic ring
  • sc: single crochet
  • sc2tog: single
  • sl st: slip stitch
  • st(s): stitch(es)

Notes

  • The project is worked as 4 separate pieces, 2 faux-fur balls that will make up the snowman, a hat, and a scarf.
  • This project is worked in continuous rounds, that is in a spiral. Use a stitch marker to identify your first stitch so you don’t lose your way.
  • The brackets in the pattern mean that you should work the instructions inside as many times as directed.
  • If you want to make a bigger snowman, keep making rounds of 6 st increases and then, make the respective decreases.
  • When making the snowman, I saw that the wrong side of the balls was fluffier than the right side, so in the pattern below there’s a step to turn your ball inside out. If that is not the case with your snowman, don’t turn it.
  • When you work the sc2tog decreases if you will turn the ball inside out, work under the front loop only. If you will not turn the ball, work under the back loop only.
  • If you’d like a smaller scarf, make fewer chains. If you want to make it wider, make more rows.
  • If you’d like a taller hat, keep making rounds between Round 4 & 8. If you’d like a shorter hat, skip a few rounds between Round 4 & 8.

Top Hat

Using US size 3.00 mm crochet hook and yarn B.

Make a MR.

Round 1: 6 sc in MR <6>.

Close the MR tightly.

Round 2: 2 sc in each st around <12>.

Round 3: sc in the BLO in each st around <12>.

Round 4-8: sc in each st around <12>.

Round 9: 2 sc in the FLO in each st around <24>.

Sl st to join. Fasten off. Weave in ends.

Scarf

Ensure that you have roughly 2”/ 5cm of tail before the slip knot in every row. Additionally, when you fasten off, cut yarn leaving roughly 2”/ 5cm of tail.

Using US size G-6, 4.00 mm crochet hook and yarn C.

Ch 60. Fasten off.

Row 1: Starting from the end that you fastened off, sl st in the BLO in each st across. Fasten off.

Row 2: Go back to the beginning of Row 1. Sl st in the BLO in each st across. Fasten off.

If your yarn allows it, untwist the ends to make the fringe look fuller. Give the fringe a little trim to make the strands all the same size.

The different parts of the snowman before assembly: two balls of faux-fur, a black top hat, and a scarf.

Assembly

Start by joining the head and the body of the snowman. Use the tail from the head that you didn’t weave in and a tapestry needle to join the two pieces together.

Using B and a tapestry needle, sew the hat to the head of the snowman. I sew mine a little tipped to side.

Put the scarf around the “neck” of your snowman. I folded my scarf in half, grabbed it by the fold and both ends, wrapped it around its neck and passed the ends through the fold. If you want the scarf to stay in place, I recommend tacking it in place with a stitch or two.

Using B, give your snowman eyes and a smiling face! 🙂
